Re: Don't assume the Flag has 50 stars...

I'd think of this as an IQ Test, kind of like that annoying "How Many Triangles" you always see on Yahoo.com and other sites.

This sentence in particular reminded me of an earlier post somewhere around here (can't find the right search terms to get it) that said that this might be a way for the government to search for kids for its secret programs. Somewhat supported by choice of making Captain Coop the whistleblower the "mascot". Who knows, maybe it IS an IQ test - though this seems more like being able to make the right guess.

I don't think this needs to be overthought like the whole dots and flecks of dust thing.

It's not asking how many stars do you see? It doesn't strike me as any kind of mind bender puzzle at all. It's straight forward..how many stars are on this page? Not how many do you see, not how many do you think might be stars, but how many on the page? Notice nobody wondered if we needed to include the stars on the envelope...didn't say envelope. Said page. Obviously one must be able to see them to count them but in the rocket case, we can see it's a US Flag and we don't need to grab a mag glass and hunker down counting dots. We know how many. Same principle: how many stars are on the flag? 50. How many stars can you see on the flag? Relative to beholder.

So for me, I'm going with how many stars are on this page? Not the webpage, not the envelope, not the news ad...but this page...and on this page, how many stars is:

Background: 16
Challenge: 1
RP Logo (as in most people will presume the dots ARE stars as a rule): 22
Coop's flag: 50
Rocket: ergo 50 also

139 stars are on this page

(And where the hell I got 256 or what I was thinking when I posted it, no idea...sleep deprivation ;-p)

I'm sticking with thorough and straight forward. All the stars 139

DRAT! - I may have found another star!
RP Logo was "altered"

I was going to suggest we cut out all the background info, as:
a) We cannot clearly see the number of stars on the Rocket's flag. And, if it's in the future, it could have more than 50 stars?
b) We are not 100% sure all the "stars" in the RP Logo are, in fact, stars ... a few could be planets (i.e. Mars, Saturn, etc ... can be seen from earth with the naked eye).

I was going to post:
RasGold wrote:
Leaving out all the background, and not doubling up on the "white" stars, we can see 16 total; easy ... PLUS the big star the Challenge is posted PLUS the word "Stars" in the challenge itself ...

We are left with 16(+2).
16+2=18 ... So our answers should be (due to lack of sleep) 16/18 ...
Errrr ... which would resemble the Golden Ratio of 1.618!?!?

However, I was looking at the letter and noticed that the Rocket Pop in the boy's hand is different from the one on the RP Website!
(This may have been mentioned on the Snail-Mail thread - But this is new info and need not get trouted)

Is that another "star" on the Pop?!?!

No, it's the window of the rocket tho.

I agree, looks like a window. Don't remember seeing one in a bomb pop but gum balls were used in some Popsicles which in this case probably represents a window. No idea why it's not in the stand alone rocket pop so it could just be an artists rendition/interpretation of the window of the rocket. Either way it's a nice catch.

EDIT: It's on the Rocket Pop from the puzzle on the printout. Looks like a gum ball and not a star.

No, I initially thought it may be a star as well, but I imagine the pop looks like one from this image

it's a GUMBALL

Jeez ya gotta be fast around here lol.

I still think we should count the two flags = 100
the RP logo = 22
all stars = 17
the word "stars" = 1
Total = 140

So why not play it back with how many stars are on this page, and instead of a single number, let's go with the listing categories...

two flags = 100
the RP logo = 22
all stars = 17
the word "stars" = 1
Total = 140

And send it in that way. So we're covered ;p

When counting the words for stars... are you also going to include the letters that make up your own astronaut name? So, in that case, each answer could be different, yet still correct??

Email

I sent an email to Capt. Coop

"Hey Captain Coop!

Buck Rodgers here reporting for duty! I just wanted to inform you that I have completed my first assigned trainee mission. I have successfully scouted out each of the stars located on my form.

There are:

17 Printed Stars
22 Stars in the Rocket Poppeteer Logo
50 Stars in each American Flag (a total of 100)
And technically the word "Stars" could be counted too!

Thats brings the total to 140 stars (139 if the word stars itself isn't counted.)

P.S. Just like a real spaceman, I love Rocket Poppeteers!

-From-
Your loyal recruit, Buck Rodgers."

This way it covers all possible answers. I still got an auto-response, but it was worth trying.

Ha Ha!!

I thought of the email thing as well; looks like you did it first!

It also looks like a general consensus of 140 Stars?
(so far)

I did some searches on the possible combinations, using words and numerals, to no avail Crying or Very sad

Has anyone tried using the combinations at STIES for the DEVICE name?

Re: Email

Maybe we'll have to snail mail them back with the answer and wait another 2 months. Sad

Eclipse?

It was previously mentioned that the moon on the RP site seemed to have a glow around it similar to an eclipse. So if picture of the moon on the letter is during a solar eclipse, you would have another star on the page to add to the count, the Sun.

Stars

Here's a couple of ways that we could precede:

Out of those who've received their "astronaut name," for however many permutations that have been arrived at regarding "stars," organize, and let's say Commander Ras snail mails the number 17, someone else 100, etc. and by process of elimination learn who is correct, or if it is even the time and place to reply.

Others could e-mail the same set of numbers.

One thing that raises questions for me is the ambiguity of the question. With this being part of a mailing (and even considering the supposed date being in 1963?) and the work that went into constructing the page with its background, it would not have been difficult to have asked, "SPACE CHALLENGE! HOW MANY [an illustration of a 5 point star followed by the letter "s"] ARE ON THE PAGE."

Instead the word "stars" was used, and has been mentioned before, and there is only one such occurrence.
