Re: Eclipse?

It was previously mentioned that the moon on the RP site seemed to have a glow around it similar to an eclipse. So if picture of the moon on the letter is during a solar eclipse, you would have another star on the page to add to the count, the Sun.

If you really want to get astronomical: the glow around the moon couldn't be the glow from the sun behind it, because then the moon would be a black shadow. In a solar eclipse, the bright side of the moon is facing the sun, not Earth.

The RP moon is in a crescent phase of reflection, meaning the sun is to the side of it (to some degree), not behind it. The glow around it just...art. Smile

Hrm...well, I only counted 89, plus "Coop" (a clever addition, naturally) so it's up to 90. And I guess, if they expect us to automatically add fifty stars because of the flag on the ship...I'd agree with 140.

Here's a couple of ways that we could precede:

Out of those who've received their "astronaut name," for however many permutations that have been arrived at regarding "stars," organize, and let's say Commander Ras snail mails the number 17, someone else 100, etc. and by process of elimination learn who is correct, or if it is even the time and place to reply.

Others could e-mail the same set of numbers.

Yes, I also thought about that. Or we should just wait.

Not really following this star count closely, so trout me if it's been mentioned, but everyone here does realize in basic astronomy that planets count as stars, no?

I have never been taught nor read anything about planets being counted as stars? But I could be misunderstanding something. So could you please explain or provide a link explaining how they are counted as stars?Im no expert but the class I took so very longer ago never spoke of them as such.Things could have changed tho because pluto is not a planet now either lol

Please cite your source on that.

Everything I find in a quick Googling disputes your claim, including:

Quote:
Definition: star: A ball of mostly hydrogen and helium gas that shines extremely brightly. Our Sun is a star. A star is so massive that its core is extremely dense and hot. At the high core temperatures of a star, atoms move so fast that they sometimes stick to other atoms when they collide with them, forming more massive atoms and releasing a great amount of energy. This process is known as nuclear fusion.

Granted it's been hot this summer, but we are not living on a star, just a planet.

Back to the point of the star-counting game:

I agree on not getting too interpretational about how many "stars" on are that letter page, and on waiting for our cue to reply (if any). The letter 'game' may just be a juvenile activity and not pay off by itself in the ARG, rather like the maze on the mail-in coupon. Some sent it in completed, others didn't — all seem to be getting the letter from RP regardless. Such printed activity games were the norm for kids once upon a time, in the dark ages before GameBoys and iPhones. Laughing

Has anyone thought that this little star counting game could be meaningless, just like the maze game we did?

*raises hand*

Doin it anyway. Not sure what we're supposed to do or why we needed a consensus. I'm sending a separate note in or a copy of the letter (wanna save it) with the round up each category of stars and a total of 140. See what happens.

Two flags: 100
Background: 17
RP Logo: 22
Space Challenge: 1
Total: 140

Just to chime in, when I get around to writing back my answer will be 1, "Coop" Cooper is the only "real" star on the page. Smile I'm also thinking of including an Apollo Bar ref just for kicks and giggles.

late to this particular game due to argfest, but has anyone considered that this may again be an 'align the stars' to find the 'hidden message' somewhere?

If you look at the letter, all the solid and hollow stars come in pairs, except the upper right and lower left hollow stars, which happen to be the same size...... looks like those stars need to align over something and the other stars will reveal something when overlaid, just like the first newspaper puzzle

There's also the stars on the back of the envelope. I tried for a bit (with tracing paper) to line them up over the letter itself, using the longest line as a starting point. They seemed to almost fit, except I think for the last one. Didn't seem to be English, but could be something I suppose......

I'm in the camp that thinks it's just something silly to keep with the "kids" memberships. I would guess future letters would also have little games, find the hidden objects, stuff like that.

I strongly feel that there will be a decoder ring/badge element later, to keep with the product/mascot theme. Like Capt. Midnight from the old Ovaltine radio serials.

Or not. Smile

Been going over and over in my head what we are to do with the proper star count when we get it. I started thinking that what if the right star count could be plugged in after the rocket poppeteers web address to open the site ala rocketpoppeteers.com/16 or whatever the right count is. If this sounds totally stupid feel free to berate me, this is only my third arg (Cloverfield and Marble Hornets the other two) so i am not totally sure if that would even work, but ive seen crazier stuff before and it seemed like an intriguing idea especially with the length of time that site has been inactive. Alot of people are thinking it will come active before long, but what if its us that have to activate it? Please chime in with your thoughts

I think you should be the one testing out your idea. Go pull it up and try it...let us know if it worked.
