I'm still thinking we should use the Golden Ratio with the letter. Possibly using the large star as a starting point and using the swirl to find words in the letter.

How many stars?

I suppose one side of me goes with the camp that says the question regarding "how many stars on the page" is just the same as the maze from the STIES printout. Recall that we were not encouraged to "send the maze in" but to "cut along the dotted lines." That was so that our address and astronaut name could be entered into a database for later, and we could be sent our letters.

On the other hand, we could get overly analytical (perhaps that's what the PMs want us to do) and count each and everything that could be considered "stars."

By inference, we could say that there were "stars" on both flags, but without a microscope, and even wih one, can you REALLY see the stars on both flags? I can't, and I'm not legally blind (yet).

And if you're considering the points of light in the RP logo, isn't it true (as I believe has been mentioned prior) that planets can be seen from terra firma? So, how can anyone be certain that the points of light on the RP logo are, in fact, actual stars (by way of the dictionary's definition) or planets reflecting the light of the sun?

Are the PMs appealing to what a young person, ie. someone, who in 1963 would be apt to cut out the coupon and want to be part of something tantamount to joining Santa's elves, or are they appealing to someone who will understand that they are to infer that those are truly "stars" on both flags, and "stars" on the RP logo?

To me, it just seems to be so ambiguous and open to so many interpretations (re: all of the permutations expressed on this forum) as to be meaningless.

That's my opinion for today--tomorrow a star could collide with earth and destroy the planet.

I mean the latest news is one of Hollyweird's cherished "stars" is in the slammer for awhile. Go figure! Who would have thunk that such a fine example to peers her age would be treated so viciously? Wink

no "stars"?

I'll suggest it just because I've looked and haven't found it -

If one reads the question as literally as possible there are no actual stars (suns or famous people) on the page. Further - which page is "this" page?

C'est ne 'pas une pipe, etc...

Wait, I'm not sure if I'm understanding what you mean by "actual stars". Do you mean that we shouldn't count them because they're not pictures of, say, Betelgeuse or Rigel?
However, I think it's pretty clear which page "this" page is.

Ah, yes. No need to get that deep for what's supposed to have the illusion of being an advertising tool for kids. Wink

Super 8 vs Video
... at the time

^^NICE!^^

RustyJames wrote:
Before video people used to shoot their home movies on cheap film stocks like 8mm which was just a strip of 16mm cut in half. In the nineteen sixties Kodak introduced super 8 film which was" super" in that it was made with smaller sprocket holes along the side so that the image surface area was greater.

Despite its cost, $15 for a three minute role plus another $10 for developing, the obsolete medium is supported by a die hard fan base of purists, enough that Kodak still makes a few different flavors of super 8. It's tough getting developed though. Kodak has a color lab in Switzerland and as far as I know it's the only place in the world that will process the stuff. There are a few places that still do black and white, and I send mine to Batavia, Illinois.

Of course any super 8 fan worth his salt eventually tries his hand at home developing, but it's dangerous and impractical.

So what's the point?

well, for one thing it's a purist issue. There's a school of thought which says that film is beautiful and video is crass.

Also it's a real poor man's medium. The film is expensive but the cameras are cheap, 5-10 bucks cheap. So you've got to pick your shot carefully but if you drop your camera of a bridge (I have dropped a camera off of a bridge) it's no big deal. There are times when that balance of freedom and restriction is desirable.

Although super 8 is usually silent I've seen websites with sound super 8 for sale, but you'll need a sound camera. What happens is someone orders a large amount to be made, buys it in bulk and then sell off the extras.

To put this into perspective ...
**FLASHBACK*** 1979

VTRs (Video tape Recorders) where just hitting the "home" market at that time. They were reel-to-reel 3/4" tapes which cost thousands of dollars.
It was not until Sony (BetaMax) and Panasonic/JVC (VHS - Video Home System) created VCR (Video Cassette Recorders).
At the time, B&W "Camcorders" cost $1,500 bucks (And used 8track tapes to record on)! And VCRs cost between $600 to over a Thou! (I know this as I was on the forefront of the video revolution).

The Teaser/Trailer says "1979", therefore, we NEED to concentrate on that time and not the 50's/60's (as only reg 8mm was popular during those decades).

I quickly moved up to 16mm and 35mm (not as far as 70mm), but costs skyrocketed, and video became my mainstay (and my bread and butter). ... I even "dabbled" a while with 3/4" Video, but BetaMAx sort of won out with the television industry.
Panasonic then created HiFi and S-VHS ... A bit harder to work with, tho the "flying erase heads" ended the video editor's nightmare of the red and blue bars! ... The cost remained over thousands!

If you are still reading this, I want to thank you for viewing my thread.

I have more impressing things to do right now.
And, Slusho still deserves a Brownie: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=718780#718780

What if we got different people to submit a number. If there are ten different possibilities then lets get twenty to people to send in two letters for one response. Then again this paper doesn't say to return it...

Agreed! Looks like it's already been narrowed down to about 10 options so the legwork is done. When and if we need this number everyone will try one of the ten that they think is correct. Eventually the right number will be chosen and word will get out and spread like a wildfire.

I don't have my letter yet but looking at the scan and if I were a KID I would only count the actual STAR SHAPES on that (THIS) page, not the logo, not the flags... so I say 17. What company is gonna make a kid count to 140 - too cruel!

The simplest answer must be ok. For example, they responded with the letter, regardless the way you cut the registration form. I go with the "kid game" angle.
