 Tron: Legacy @ 2010 SDCC
Info. RE Tron at SD Comic-Con

Poached this article from ComingSoon.net (who poached it from a Disney press-release).

Walt Disney Pictures has announced that Tron Legacy will be presented at the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 22. The panel will feature filmmakers and talent from the December 17 3D release. A "TRON" booth will also be set up at the convention:

Returning for an unprecedented third year to the fans and Convention that "started it all," Walt Disney Pictures is pleased to present a very special, insider look at its upcoming "TRON: Legacy" at this year's San Diego Comic-Con International Convention. At 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2010, the panel presentation will be held in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. On the dais will be filmmakers and talent from the film, including director Joe Kosinski, producers Sean Bailey and Steven Lisberger as wells as cast members Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen and Bruce Boxleitner. The panel discussion, to be moderated by Patton Oswalt, is set to include exclusive glimpses of the film, as well as a Q & A involving all panel participants, along with special surprise guests.

It was at the 2008 Convention that the vision of a 21st century TRON was born. When VFX test footage was shown to a packed hall of incredibly surprised convention attendees, it was met with such an overwhelmingly positive response—becoming the "it" moment of the Convention—that the studio gave the film an enthusiastic green light. In 2009 "TRON: Legacy" returned to Comic-Con with an expanded presence and this year, the filmmakers and cast are back with never before seen visuals and "scoop" for the Convention fans who have been such an instrumental part of the story of "TRON: Legacy."

Director Joe Kosinski comments: "When we made the teaser, we envisioned it as a sneak peek at the potential of this project. We set out to stay true to the characters, the vehicles, and the world established in the first film—then show its evolution. When it took off with the fans, we knew we were in the right place. Because they've been key to getting this story told, we're back to keep them involved, and excited to finally present actual footage from the film to the audience that made it all possible."

To add to the excitement of this extraordinary event, Disney will showcase an interactive TRON booth on the convention floor (located on aisle #3712), giving fans a first look at the all new "TRON: Legacy" inspired merchandise launching this fall. Capturing the action, light, and cool aesthetic style of the film, the display will include toys, electronics, collectibles, apparel, accessories, publishing and the "TRON: Evolution" video game from Disney Interactive Studios. Comic-Con exclusive products will also be on sale. Disney will also reveal exciting new mobile content at the event.

If anyone hears anything else, post it here!

how early do you think we need to get there to ensure a spot for the panel?

Not going myself, but I went about 5 years ago. I think Hall H is usually a couple hours long with panels for a bunch of movies, each 30-45 minutes long. All the seats were taken when I got in there and panels had already started, but I was able to stand in the back which was fine by me. I'd imagine if you'd prefer a seat you'd probably want in an 30-60 minutes early.
Someone who's been more recently than me or who's been early enough to get a seat can correct me. Smile

BTW: If you want a swag bag you'll have to stick around till all the movie panels have finished. Standing in the back guaranteed me a bag and quicker exit.

Sorry if this is spam, but I thought it fit because it is somewhat Flynn Lives related and I didn't know where else to post it. This was taken at an E3 event about the upcoming film and videogame Scott Pilgrim vs. the World...

From someone who attends SDCC every year: If you want a GREAT seat for the Hall H presentations, you need to be there extraordinarily early in the morning (think pre-sunrise, or even the night before), and plan to stay until your panel is done. There are people who camp in Hall H for the entire convention.

If you want a GOOD seat for Hall H, prepare to get in line once the convention center opens for guests... 9-10am. You'll probably have to wait outside for a while, then sit through several other panels, and you might have to jockey for seats with good viewing of the video boards. You probably won't get within throwing distance of the stage (unless you're some kind of athlete or something), but you will be able to see things.

If you want to merely BE in the room for the panel, make sure you get there at least 2 hours early... probably more like 3, if it's Saturday. Be ready to wait outside in the sun. The temperature won't be terrible - probably in the mid-to-high-80s - but it will probably be cloudless, and the midday/afternoon sun in San Diego will burn you very easily. There is almost no shade.

Regardless, get something cool to drink beforehand, and preferably, something to eat - you'll be in there for a while. Thankfully, there are restrooms available directly inside Hall H, and there's a snackbar just outside that you can go to without giving up access to the room (though you might lose your seat if you don't have friends to hold them).

A final note... there are NO guarantees to these suggestions. You might get in to see your panel very easily... and you might never even get close to the door. It all depends on what panels are around it (for example, the Twilight fans tend to take up a LOT of space). See what's happening that day, and base your plans around that accordingly.

Speaking from experience last year: THIS. If Twilight happens to be on that day, then take all those times emerald just mentioned and double them or something.

Since SDCC '09 is where the viral marketing campaign for Legacy began, do you think that's where it will start up again?

If you mean what I think you mean by this, and from the way you and others describe some of the circumstances of SDCC, I have to wonder if the people that make up those lines and campers have lives.

Technically, this all started at SDCC '08 when the first version of the teaser was a surprise popped on the crowd. You know, the one leaked out in a video shot from the hip?

True, but that was just a SVFX concept test to see what kind of response it would get. At the time, Disney claimed they had no plans to make a Tron sequel. Plus you really can't call that teaser a part of the viral marketing campaign by 48E

Since this is too major of a Hollywood event to NOT have something happen at Comic-Con - there will be a significant OFFICIAL Tron presence at Con. As for the ARG starting up again... I'd say there's probably a 75% chance of it. This is where they really started up the ARG last year, and it's got a large, built-in crowd base to draw from. That said, there's no specific reason they'd do two events at the same venue two years in a row... that might make non-SoCal people kind of angry at how much attention we're getting.

Indeed. I've left the con one evening, around 9, 10 pm, heading to a nearby parking structure. There were about two dozen people with sleeping bags on the sidewalk, waiting in line for Hall H, for the next day.

I do strongly recommend trolling the SDCC web site (www.comic-con.org/cci) and watch when they start posting information about panels. Usually, they begin finalizing things a week before the con, and reveal the official schedules one day at a time... that'll let you plan at least SLIGHTLY ahead, rather than facing the horror of a long wait immediately after SDCC '10 begins.

It's temporary, as everyone knows about the daily earthquakes and how we're likely to fall into the ocean any minute.
In fact, if any out-of-staters have tickets to this years SDCC and don't wish to risk dying with the rest of us poor saps (I'm telling you, we have earthquakes every day! Big, huge ones! It's all coming to an end for us any day now!), then you can send your tickets to me (I'm going down with the ship, anyways) and I'll go for you and snap pictures (hopefully I'll get to upload them before the Big One) as a service to you.
Think about it... is Tron really worth dying for? Wink
Besides that, next year San Diego probably won't be above water anymore, so you can lobby to have Comic-Con in your state.
Do yourself a favor, don't risk it! I'm already a goner anyway! Take advantage of my horrible situation!

(If this works, then I'm definitely in the wrong line of business! Laughing )

I entered a contest recently to win a trip for 2 to SDCC next month. It ends next Wednesday, so I'll let you guys know if I win. If I do, I'll be sure to let you guys know what happens at the Tron Legacy Panel as well as whatever Flynn Lives has planned. Sound good? Very Happy

just got an idea!
for whoever on here is going to SDCC:
we'll exchange contacts the week before, and whoever gets in line first for the panel texts the others in the group and saves us a spot in line. that way we can all be one happy grid bug (is that what we settled on?) family!

what do you think?

I think this is how riots get started. When you've spent all night in the November cold to be sure you get a "Only ## per store!" Black Friday item and the 10 people in front of you become 30 with a half-hour to go, not getting the item tends to stick with you for a long time. I don't do lines, anymore. And if I did, I'm sorry, I wouldn't save you a spot. It's just wrong.

oh well...thought it was worth a try Smile

the only reason i was suggesting that is because i have to drive down that morning with my family from LA, which means to get there "early" id have to leave at around 4 or 5 am with no stops. luckily i think the hotels will let us add on one extra night before, so maybe we'll just go down Wednesday night and leave the hotel for the con at the same time as the people already in SD.
