[OT] Catching a Wave?

/. just noted Google Wave is now basically open

http://tech.slashdot.org/story/10/05/19/1721203/Google-Wave-Now-Open-To-All?from=rss

Is anyone interested in trying to use it to 'play'? I've loged in a few times, and just never figured out what to do with it, but this kind of thing seems well suited to Wave.

Dunno, the wave will do the same job wiki is doing now!
Despite the fact that it will grow into a Google Tsunami Laughing

You might be interested to know that with the Spiffy New Forum Updates of SpaceBass' waves are actually embeddable here.

The wiki strikes me as a great place for reference stuff - how to use a wave in the context of ARG play I don't know yet. Don't think it's worth duplicating the wiki, I've been playing with wave for a while now for work purposes (shared lab-book, writing papers - google docs or wikis all better) but a wave must be useful for something *pokes wave with stick*

Ha... then you're basically in the same boat as I'm in. I thought it might be good for Project Managment, too, but I wouldn't host an internal project externally...

If I may make a suggestion, how about trying out some embedded waves as stickied resource threads? We generally have a few of these in each forum to capture basic data and pointers, even when there are extensive wikis for campaigns.

It strikes me that the wave model might fit well the niche in between forum-type discussion and wiki-type references. Discussions are fast-moving, especially during and around campaign updates but even well-maintained wikis are time-hampered by the inability for more than one user to edit a given page simultaneously and the intrinsic need for citations and backup for reference material. A reference wave, on the other hand, could be edited by many at once and the playback ability allows readers to see what has transpired since they last viewed it (it saves states for registered users so you only have to playback starting with the most recent unviewed revisions), and it wouldn't be as important to be convinced of something before adding it to the pool.

So I would envision it as a sort of fusion of reference and discussion, where speculative and uncorroborated material were more prevalent and updates of new finds were had more immediately. Things could be added and deleted quickly and people could annotate or briefly discuss those updates inline.

I would say start one and give it a shot. If the wave owner posts it in a thread, the thread replies could be used for a higher-level meta-discussion of the wave reference as well as to ask for invites to edit the wave itself. Those resource posts would then no longer have to rely on the presence of the original author or a forum moderator to update new material or remove obsoleted information. The wave would be used for instantly cataloging and annotating finds and enumerating speculative theories, and the wikis would still be an excellent way to "commit to print" all the stuff that sticks.

Funnily enough a friend and my are using Wave to keep track of Super 8. Well, mainly it's my way of luring him into ARGs Twisted Evil

I've been on wave since the beta testing days but stopped using it because nobody I know would use it. I would definitely be interested in a Super8 wave.

I never really got hooked on Wave... mainly because it was its own site with its own stuff. But I think this may be a good way to play around and experiment with it in the context of a forum - having an embeddable wave feature at UF may be more useful than just a standalone wave. I mean, we're already here Smile
It can especially come in handy for live action events and coverage, quick puzzle solving and collaboration and whatnot, then the final result archived back on a wiki.

I'm all for it!

I hope you're not waiting for me to start one, I'm still pretty clueless as to how they work, let alone how to embed something like that...

OK - I'm taking the plunge and putting together one now with some bare bones of structure, PM me your email address if you want me to add you (anyone who's on it will be able to add people, so if I'm not around and you're happy to post your email address on the forum then that may be quicker). I guess we leave it closed rather than public for now?

Will embed in a sec Smile

[Edit] It has to be public to be viewable on the forum as I understand it. This means that it should be searchable within wave and you can follow it yourself. To search public waves include with:public in the search. I've tagged this one with [Unforum] which might be good general practise for unforum waves and so you can find it with:

Code:
with:public [Unforum]

If you're a bit uncertain then I'm still happy to add your email address to my contacts as I said above.

To generate an external link to the wave that's embeddable here I've added the gadget mywaveidSPLATappspot.com to the wave. This generates a final blip with the correct style of link. The app can then be removed and the blip deleted cos it's ugly Wink

I think that's it...

No it isn't - look away, still changing!

[Edit] Have hacked the wave out of this post and moved it to a sticky here [Link]
