"A film about a train wreck in a steel town, and how it comes together to heal."
Uh...
Aliens? Area 51? Creature smashing its way out of a train car?
Someone might want to toss said reporter an email. Unlikely they want to admit they are clueless though.
It looks like the news report wants to paint the town in a "good light."
I worked for a local ABC news dept. in a small town in NC.
It was one of the stations that refused to show NYPD-Blue back in the day!
Small town news shows rarely discuss negative situations directly regarding their township. As for the "news article" concerning the NYPD-Blue ban?
"The controversy is nation wide."
But, what they failed to report, is the fact that only Fifty-seven of ABC's 225 affiliates preempted the first episode because of protests led by Rev. Donald Wildmon and his American Family Association (AFA). The show's content prompted the organization to take out full page ads in major newspapers, asking viewers to boycott the show and calling it a "soft-core porn" series. The preemptions were mostly in smaller markets, comprising 10–15% of potential viewers which limited the impact of the protest.
The newspapers had more info than our aired news cast!!!
LOL

Yeah, you're fully right.
And I think smart JJ and Steven do know it very well. I think, this little town wouldn't allow to make an ultimative alien monster horror movie. But to be a set for a romantic children story, about growing up and stuff - filmed by Spielberg - that should increase the popularity of this small and nice town (this reason can even let them to paint the local church in another colors ). JJ and Spielberg are great marketeers, lol.

weirton,WV Pretty close to Ohio Okay, so the train crashes outside of Ohio. Now we have kids in the mix in period town. Minker's mom's clothes looked 50-60's. The train crash happened 70's. I can see the kids finding the aliens who befriend them and then turn out to be real monsters. Or, it's a group of aliens some good and some bad. The good befriend the kids who rally to save the town from the bad aliens. I expect a lot of CGI and ET like moments. Violent enough to get a rating but nice enough to still be suitable for kids. Think about it, even the film trailer, as violent as it is, is still sans blood, guts or anything really graphic. Kids movie.

Bearing in mind what Will_Quick (welcome, BTW) noted about the Ohio state flag, Weirton residents are no doubt aware that the setting of the movie is not in WV and their hometown. Even if thy learn that it's a flick about how all evil of mankind could be traced to Weir(d)to(w)n, the locals realize that it means $$$ for their town.

The news reporter's description sounds like what was fed to them by the studios, in part to deflect the awareness of the shooting location for the film, and it sounds just like the sort of 'director's underlying message' that both Spielberg and Abrams would like. The fact a reporter was probably led by the nose with that is what's so pathetic.

Except this is about publicity (for the town and the film), not about reporting. When a major Hollywood production comes to your town, you don't try to blow the lid off the plot secrets in an investigative report. You support the jobs and income the film brings to your local economy and you cooperate with the show while it's in town. The production being in Weirton is the news, not the movie's plot.

Agree with this.. They dont want the townspeople digging up dirt on the plot and exposing (selling info to the National Intruder) anything to the public. We know how secretive JJ is about his plots and i'm sure everyone in the town who wishes to participate in the filming will be required to sign a NDA under threat of a lawsuit if broken.

Weirton,WV Main Street Lillian/Weirton was hopping today with set designers, et al. In addition to the car lot and arcade, it looks like there is some kind of clothing shop or five and ten type store front being created. Hearsay (being what it is) has it that Brad Pitt was in town last week.

Weirton, WV Here are a couple of pics. The one with the massive mill looming in the background is a before shot of part of Main St. where there has been some cosmetics going on. Sorry, don't have the after shot, but there now is an auto dealer sign painted on the bare gray wall in the picture. The other picture is a current shot of a building that once housed an eye clinic. The mannequins in the window are a new addition, and there appears to be a variety of other goods on shelves inside.
