It is a real theater. Plus the 2 movie theaters (AMC Universal Citywalk Orlando and the Viera Rave theater) at which I've seen the Tron Legacy standee haven't had the Encom posters accompanying them.
I think its a promotional effort for certain theaters else we see it more widespread.
I've also seen that very same standee in 3 of the 4 theaters in my area and none of them had the Encom items. Plus if it was going to be ingame and Encom related, at the very least they should've covered the Disney logo above the Tron Legacy logo and replaced it with an Encom logo. The press release has no mention of Disney. If they wanted the Press release to sound more legit, they should've included Disney as one of the partners.

Yeah this makes no sense. It doesn't fit into the feel of the ARG at all. Why would ENCOM suddenly get into the movie business? And why make a film about something that may make them look bad? Why put a GIANT QR code on a standee in a lobby? That's not 42E's style and it doesn't feel like the rest of the world of the ARG.

I agree it feels off. until other theaters start showing up with the same QR code linking to the same type of announcement I think it is a marketing ploy by the theater. I did check the theater events and there was nothing of not through the end of the month (mostly live broadcasts from the MET or fights)

And anyway, why use a barcode to advertise a URL to a website?
Because it is a new trendy way to advertise, most especially amongst the growing market of smartphone users. The practice is already very common in Japan, and is becoming so in Europe. You also see it on a fair number of websites. Because its not humanly readable, it creates curiosity and anticipation, which are golden in marketing.

I spoke with one of the managers from the theater today, he said that this is something they are personally doing to promote the movie although it is heavily inspired by the stuff that 42E are doing.
he also said that they have another site... www.crosswoodsexposed.info, but that site wont be advertised until mid september.
since this is not official arg, i will change the subject to OT. i will continue to post updates when i see stuff since its still pretty cool. I look forward to see how other theaters promote this movie.

well that is cool that they are that interested in promoting the movie they are creating their own ARG offshoot. keep us informed and wish more theaters were excited about the movie to do something like this.

Well if it's not official Disney/42E marketing, are they allowed to use the Encom logo and name?
EDIT: Looks like Disney asked them to pull the site: http://www.thecrosswoods.com/encom/index.html

Well crap. Any hopes there were for a new ARG have been crushed.

Yep, there's an article about it on MovieViral . It also includes a picture of the display. It wasn't exactly subtle.

At the request of Disney, we have had to halt our online marketing for the Tron Legacy motion picture. We will continue to promote the feature in-house in exciting and unique ways. For more information about the Marcus Crosswoods Cinema, please visit www.marcustheatres.com.

This all seems a little odd, don't you think? I mean, you would've thought that Marcus Theatres would get permission from Disney first before using the Encom logo... blatant copyright infringement otherwise.
Unless they had approval from Disney, but 42E stepped in at the last minute and advised Disney to do a U-turn(?)

As noted elsewhere, Disney is working hard to keep everything properly in canon for the Tron franchise. The description of Tron: Legacy as a movie from Encom based on the game is very badly out of canon. Neat idea on the theater's part, but it was a very 'ready, fire, aim' sort of move. This isn't too uncommon when someone tries to market something they really don't grasp. (In this case, the concept of ARG or the story and universe of Tron.)

it could have just been a misunderstanding of what they were allowed to do. Or they may have thought Disney wouldn't find out or wouldn't care.
