I wonder if the guy who came up with the idea got his ass canned. I would hope not, but you can't help but imagine that the theater getting approached by Disney with a cease and desist request had to have made the owner jumpy and looking for a culprit to make an example of. Too bad.

Interesting.

I actually just went to a Marcus Theater here in Cedar Falls, IA. They have very little space for displays, so nothing was up except for a Tron poster. Also, they showed the trailer before our movie, which was nice.

Sorry, programs... looks like they shut down the site.. Mickey's nose got in there and made the call to http://thecrosswoods.com/encom site:

Quote:
At the request of Disney, we have had to halt our online marketing for the Tron Legacy motion picture. We will continue to promote the feature in-house in exciting and unique ways. For more information about the Marcus Crosswoods Cinema, please visit www.marcustheatres.com.

On a positive note, Disney's action against Marcus Theatres would suggest that the FlynnLives ARG is still active - and we should receive an update soon-ish! Very Happy

I'm not surprised. It was shady and out of place from the beginning.

IF it had been something allowed by Disney, then they wouldn't have had the canon messed up so much. I'm not really surprised that it got shut down, not because Disney may be "money hungry" but, because they can do better at promoting the movie. The initiative by the theater was cool, but they couldn't have been surprised when Disney called them. They knew they were breaking copyright with what they were doing.

Playing devils advocate, that's not necessarily the case... Disney is just being Disney. They are more possessive of their IP than anyone else on the planet.

As mentioned in the past, Disney has in the past sued two preschools because they had character images as murals.

That being said, I'm glad they took action. In this context, the theatre was basically screwing with the canon, unofficially, and potentially just causing problems for the franchise plans. Regardless of IP, it was a case of a gamejack, or at least a spinoff that could conflict with the story canon. *slap on the wrist*

The funny thing is, it probably was discovered as a result of being posted here. Otherwise Disney would never have found out. But it gets posted here, the PM's watch us, and this gets reported up the chain.

Well, then... Disney? If you're watching, I'd say you've got a great potential partner in this establishment. One who cares about the experience their patrons enjoy. There's not a lot of that, these days.
Properly armed, they'd do you a great job on this and future releases.
You should ask yourselves... "What would Walt do?" Wink
