Welcome back Cyngs!

I just received a similar e-mail:
Quote:
Dear Mr. or Ms Shizzire,

We would be more than happy to answer any and all questions about Iron Clad's property developments and in-home living technologies.

We currently have two prominent development projects moving forward in the country's central region. We are starting up the process of erecting one of our new technology demonstration homes in Georgina, Ontario and are nearing the end of our survey process in Gods Lake, Manitoba for a new series of timeshares which will be paired with an adjoining corporate complex.

Unfortunately we cannot say more about the latter project until our company makes an official statement, but we are excited about what lies ahead. Be assured that our Gods Lake mascot, Ernie the Elk, will be on hand for any big announcements in the near future!

If your questions are regarding investment, given the current status of our company's Executive Chairman, Herbert Bonnabee we will not be seeking new investors until further notice (http://godslakepost.com/?p=245).

If you need anymore information, please don't hesitate to call the number below. We receive a lot of call traffic during the day leaving our operators quite busy, but if you leave your number someone will surely get back to you.

Thank you for taking one step closer...to the future of comfort...

Sherry

Interesting image, no kidding...well, one of the lines decoded earlier was "blood must be spilt to start the cycle anew" (or words to that effect), so that may be the date the next cycle is supposed to begin? Meaning...maybe that's our deadline for ensuring it can begin on that date, or something terrible will happen if it begins on that date before all this is sorted out?

Also, this may seem random, but I keep wanting to think Ernie the Elk has something to do with the whole thing. He's EVERYWHERE and kind of conspicuously innocuous, if you know what I mean. Who's the employee who dresses up as Ernie, anyway?

Chad tweeted about his e-mail. Could someone do the "investor login hack" and see if something new is there? The flash crashes my machine...

My printer is out of ink, but I was able to retrieve the needed photo out of the recycle pile. Unfortunately, there isn't anything new.

A very short recap...

In the last couple of weeks, Bonnabee has died, the land survey has been completed, Dr. Grey has discovered that his father apparently was a member of the Salt brotherhood.(see attached graphic below). Just before Bonnabee's death we learn from the Seven Grandfathers of Ogashiinan, that there is a connection between Bonnabee and the subject of this ancient Egyptian text.

Chad is working to keep everything on schedule for Iron Clad since Bonnabee's death. He's also waiting to receive a small token from Bonnabee's estate.(We are going to try and intercept this small token)

The library was shut down for repairs, but nothing was repaired, it seems they removed certain books within the library referring to Gaia and or things of nature.

Plaques within the park were removed and replaced, i.e., Tristan talked about one that now contains an Ayn Rand quote. Although he can't remember or didn't know what the original plaque said, he knows it was replaced, because he can see the outline of the old plaque.

We've learned the newspaper moved into a new building in the last year. Because all the reporters, with the exception of Tristan, being in favor of Iron Clad's new development in the God's Lake area, we can only assume that Bonnabee/Iron Clad financed the move.

Here's the attachment I promised above. *Since it can be difficult to read, I'm adding the text...

Quote:
Herbert, I still believe in what Oxbridge is trying to accomplish with the Brotherhood, but those who join the Order of the Salt should come of their own accord. This order is older than the gods. Surely it has witnessed rebuff in it's storied history, and that is what makes us strong. Let the dreamers dream, we will continue to be men of action. Sal Salis Terra

Briefcase Contents
Intercepted package between HB and CP

The small token has been intercepted and it is anything but small or token!

***SPOILER ALERT***
(Not using spoiler feature as due to the sheer length of the post, and this entire post being a spoiler, I think it would be too obnoxious for people to read with the red square always blinking on/off.)
--

INVENTORY:

1. Briefcase
2. Business card holder
3. Letter in sealed envelope
4. A Vital Guide to: Hegel's Philosophy of History (Ben Kimpel)
5. Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand), 50th Anniversary Edition
6. Legal-sized envelope labeled "Phase II" with documents inside

DETAILS:

1. Briefcase

Black, leather (I think, at least on the outside), and very nice. There's even a cushion on the underside of the handle so your hands don't get sore! Not that this particular case was heavy. Pocket on the back, which was empty. Two partitions inside, letter and business card-holder in smaller, rest in larger.

2. Business card holder

Shiny metallic silver, with single wide black horizontal stripe across the back in "grippy" material. SAL SALIS TERRA engraved on the front.
Inside: Dr. Grey's business card. The word "THREAT" and an arrow in black marker pointing to his name. QR code on the back. I don't have a smartphone; will my webcam work?

3. Letter in sealed envelope

Envelope is blank on the front. The back has a handwritten code along the bottom: T E N E I M H N X I L N A E T I

Inside: Typewritten letter from HB to CP, confirming most of what we've already figured out re: Iron Clad and their knowledge of/plans for Gods' Lake. It's almost sweet, mentor-to-mentee, in a totally misguided kind of way. Now HB seems like one of those Japanese anime villains that seem almost okay once you look at things from their perspective--i.e. they sincerely think they are doing good. I think. Anyway, I will put up the letter in a separate post. There don't appear to be any codes on the letter, though in it, I can't say. The letter also implies there are now new things to uncover on the Iron Clad website.

4. A Vital Guide to: Hegel's Philosophy of History (Ben Kimpel)

This is a used copy and seems quite old. Published in 1963. Consulting my good friend Wikipedia, this section on Hegel seems the most pertinent to our case for context, especially when combined with Randian Objectivism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hegel#Progress

There is a post-it note inside the book with an arrow indicating a section titled, "Hegel's philosophy of history is one type of rationalistic metaphysic." Unfortunately I don't have time right this minute to read & digest the whole section or type it all out, and only snippets of the book are available on Google Books, but I think if you google keywords from the above heading, you'd probably get the gist. I will read the section tomorrow and report back.

Flipping through the book, I can see sentences outside that section underlined or annotated in ink. Whether those marks are Bonnabee's or a previous owner's I'm not sure, but they seem to mostly reinforce materialist/positivist themes exalting reason, progress, making reality/knowledge explicit/known/absolute.

5. Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand), 50th Anniversary Edition

This seems brand new. And as a side note, destruction of sacred spirits notwithstanding, I've read it before and this is an amazing novel that I would highly recommend reading. Flipping through I don't see any extraneous markings whatsoever, but the book also has over 1000 pages.

However, knowing Randian philosophy (Objectivism) alone might be enough to explain the presence of this book. Again, it prizes human reason and human progress above everything, especially progress grown directly out of our own reason and efforts, whether mental, physical, or technological.

In the words of Rand herself (http://www.aynrand.org/site/PageServer?pagename=objectivism_intro):

My philosophy, Objectivism, holds that:

1. Reality exists as an objective absolute—facts are facts, independent of man's feelings, wishes, hopes or fears.

2. Reason (the faculty which identifies and integrates the material provided by man's senses) is man's only means of perceiving reality, his only source of knowledge, his only guide to action, and his basic means of survival.

3. Man—every man—is an end in himself, not the means to the ends of others. He must exist for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself. The pursuit of his own rational self-interest and of his own happiness is the highest moral purpose of his life.

4. The ideal political-economic system is laissez-faire capitalism. It is a system where men deal with one another, not as victims and executioners, nor as masters and slaves, but as traders, by free, voluntary exchange to mutual benefit. It is a system where no man may obtain any values from others by resorting to physical force, and no man may initiate the use of physical force against others. The government acts only as a policeman that protects man's rights; it uses physical force only in retaliation and only against those who initiate its use, such as criminals or foreign invaders. In a system of full capitalism, there should be (but, historically, has not yet been) a complete separation of state and economics, in the same way and for the same reasons as the separation of state and church.

Chad quoted Rand on Twitter a while ago: "Everything we are and everything we have comes from one attribute of man--the function of his reasoning mind."

The new plaque Tristan mentioned, which also quotes Rand, reads: "[Man's unique reward, however, is that while] Animals survive by adjusting themselves to their background, man survives by adjusting his background to himself."

6. Legal-sized envelope labeled "Phase II" with documents inside

And here the other shoe drops. And dear god, what a shoe.

Inside: A really bad photocopy of a cover letter regarding two also enclosed scientific studies. I will put this up in a separate post, as well. The letter is annotated (the annotations are also photocopied), and the date is circled: 29 April 1944.

The two scientific studies, thank heavens, are available online. I downloaded the PDFs and will upload them for you. Or you can look them up yourself on Google Scholar: "Effect of High Fluoride Water on Intelligence of School Children in India" and "Effect of High-Fluoride Water on Intelligence in Children". If you type out the full titles, it should be the first hit for both. But get this: both are studies showing that high fluoride content in water decreases the IQ of children. I've only read the abstracts, but that is the bottom line. I wonder if Iron Clad has been contaminating the Gods' Lake water system with fluoride for the past how many decades, making for low-IQ citizens who wouldn't even think to question the upcoming development...!?

NEXT STEPS:

1. Read QR code on back of Dr. Grey's business card
2. Hack into ironcladproperties.com for more hidden information. (Note: I tried the biz card QR on investor log-in, didn't work unless I did it wrong...)
3. Decode string of letters on envelope: T E N E I M H N X I L N A E T I
4. Perhaps cross-reference above with as yet unsolved code in email Shizzire got from Iron Clad: PY96AB7THTCL3F74DEEA5ACNETTL5DF3DON
5. Read up on Hegel's philosophy of history as a rationalistic metaphysics
6. Read up on Ayn Rand's Objectivism and key themes/plot of Atlas Shrugged
7. Read the 2 studies on fluoride water and child intelligence.

I think that's everything. Go team go.

liminalchorus, great write up! Thanks for getting there to make the interception. Very Happy When you get a chance can you post pictures and or scans of everything. It's great to have a record of everything. And I'd love to see where that QR code leads.

PS. Hooray for swag!

Photos

Hey all,

I've emailed photos of everything to Dr. Grey, so they'll be available on his blog. (I don't have time to upload them all again here, and I took quite a few, and not super compressed for readability's sake.)

I also discovered another item I overlooked yesterday left in the bag. A broken obelisk, with hieroglyphics carved into all four sides! Photos of that were sent as well.

Cheers,
LC

HB's letter to CP

I've read H's Letter to C a number of times now, and a couple of things keep grabbing my focus.

"I have been declared dead"...not "I am dead" or "I have died".

and

"For decades before Iron Clad was ever even a company, I have sought..." Do we know when IC was founded? The IC website said "mid-20th century" before it went down. Trying to follow up on the "how old is HB?" issue. The GLP article put him at 74 in 2010. If IC was founded (say) in the 1960s, that seems to put HB in his 40s when it was founded. Seems a bit of a stretch to have been seeking anything for "decades" at that point, but maybe I'm grasping...

Brainstorming

Trying to brainstorm "out loud" here in case something rings a bell for someone else.

Is the ad selling tires at GLP a clue? Selling three tires and saying that they leave a "very unique footprint" seems odd. Is that somehow related to our seemingly outstanding need to get some info from the test home site?

Who is Alex? There's an ad at GLP for a soda fountain that came from the "Alexander Mackenzie" hotel. I don't think the dates line up correctly, but the Alexander Mackenzie exploration stories seem geographically and thematically related to some of the other leads about expeditions to explore cold places.

There's something a little strange about the IC "currently down" page. In the metadata, there's a commented out line that contains the string "oi5TEiyOVR5oLaKUCPxsnbH3HOUDIZoHJBDi6oIpjhU". It's in the spot where you would expect some google analytics stuff, but it's commented out.

Hi Snibble, welcome to unFiction! I've been trying different anagrams with the letters on the envelope; T E N E I M H N X I L N A E T I. If I use four of the letters for HTML from the string, I get IX NINE EATEN with the remaining letters. Sort of a weird coincidence, considering the whole cannibal theme.

Letters on the envelope

Thanks! I got into this one late and I'm still trying to catch up.

Agreed, that's odd.

I tried brute-forcing that string as a Caesar cipher and got nowhere. I tried picket fence and some simple substitutions, and got nowhere. I haven't played with anagrams yet, and all my Vigenere attempts spit out gibberish.

I'll keep hammering, but it's time for a bite of lunch first.

Maybe there's something to this anagram stuff...

I think that anagram is missing an 'I', but it's certainly interesting.

I'm not sure about the HTML part of the plan, though, as most or all of IC's site seems to be in PHP. But, maybe...

Having not had any other luck decoding that string, I started playing with anagrams myself. Some other potentially interesting partials that can be pulled out of there:
THE NEXT EMAIL
I ATE NINE
EXAMINE
ELIMINATE
ALIEN (ok, I just had to throw that one in...)
EXAMINE THE LIT INN

Still haven't had an epiphany, but I'm throwing things against the wall and hoping someone else sees something...

Seems like we're being guided to focus on the longer string at the bottom of the bloody October 31st image though. Maybe the envelope string only makes sense after the other is decoded?
