no. I was thinking it wouldn't hurt tourism if they were to just add a grave marker for us arg fans to visit even if it isn't official.

Yeah - a yearly Minker pilgrimage. Smile

Now that you mention it - the cemetery is one of the places that looks the same. I didn't open the shed's garage doors when I was there yesterday. I wonder if the interior of the shed looks the same as it does in the movie. Now that would be a real tourist attraction.

Weirton, WV - Lillian Self-Guided Tour

Very good point, RM.

To be clear:

The downtown signage for P. Schrieber's Auto (Izzy's place) painted on the wall adjacent to the car lot is still there, Izzy's building (Value-Rated) is still there, the Army/Navy Surplus signage is still there, and the WROH radio logo is still on the building where the radio station was. This logo features the water tower. The tower frame itself, which was made of cardboard, was dismantled following filming.

Fact is, that while the production and the set dressing is obviously long gone, the locations in town and buidings which initially drew Demian Resnick, Martin Whist and, ultimately, JJA to Weirton are still there. I think it would be of great interest to movie tourists to see these locations while the film is still in theaters.

The point of the brochure is not to mislead folks into thinking the sets are still there---the intention is to show folks what the sets looked like during production and encourage them to come and see spots that have now become iconic. With the brochure in hand, you will have no problem identifying the locations. Especially all you ARGers.

Ironically, at the moment, Weirton is experiencing a once-in-a-generation water outage. Personally, I blame the events (SPOILER ALERT) of the film's last minute. So if you come now, BYOBottled water.

Thanks for your interest. I will try to figure out how to post them as PDFs. They were sent to me as JPGs.

Go, Super 8! Seems like opening day grosses were decent.

Hey OWM - I don't think the brochure is misleading. It's perfect for anyone who takes the movie tour to match the Lillian and Weirton locations. I agree with the additional notes in your last post. It would be great to have the ARGers and other Super 8 fans visit Lillian/Weirton now and in the future.

About that city water shortage - hmm. Truth is stranger than fiction!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Strangely enough - for the official opening day of Super 8, the Weirton community was greeted with a major water shortage leaving all water towers empty. If you've seen the last scene of the movie you should know what a crazy coincidence this is. Or is it a coincidence... Foily!

Lillian is really Dayton.
Guest

Lillian is actually Dayton.
There is no Lillian Ohio.

Okay for real there is no Lillian, Ohio it was made up to hide the truth. The truth is that the only Air Force base in Ohio is in Dayton and everyone swears there is an area 51 and that we have one of the largest air force bases that happen to go underground and people say we have aliens but it is confidential. Which is where the idea for this movie probably came from. If you paid attention to the freaking movie officer Lamb looks at a map of Dayton and they mention Brookville and Greenville which are both not far from Dayton because I happen to live not even 30mins. from all of these locations and know people who work on base.

Okay for real - you're kinda rude for someone who hasn't done his research like the majority of the people on this forum who have invested about a year's worth of research to know that the FICTIONAL town of Lillian is not Dayton, OH - but it is near Dayton. The fictional Lillian is obviously set in Ohio. But Bad Robot, Amblin, and Paramount created their little town in Weirton, WV. The homes where Joe, Charles, and Alice lived in the movie are actually in neighborhoods in Weirton. The school, town hall, steel mill, Main St., camera shop, cemetery, etc. are in Weirton. These pictures that say Lillian are actually of areas in Weirton:

Speaking of paying attention – the map that Jackson Lamb is looking at is a map of Ohio not Dayton. The town of Lillian is even on the map just west of Dayton – as this picture of the map that was posted here months ago by Nostromo (one of our faithful accomplished ARGers) shows:

Most of us here on this forum have been paying attention to the movie and anything related to it since the first teaser trailer was leaked back in May 2010. Yep- we've been pretty attentive here – probably way long before the inkling of the idea of buying a Super 8 movie ticket even occurred to you.

There is no Lillian Ohio.

I perked up while watching the film when I saw the map, because I travel regularly to this area, and having driven from Dayton to Eaton directly, must have theoretically driven through "Lillian", lol! I stopped at West Alexandria a while back to check out an antique shop, but prior to that? Just rolling countryside. Some farms. For those really familiar with the area, the shots of respectable hills overlooking the train wreck, and small-time mountains are clearly from elsewhere. That part of Ohio "rolls", but that's about it. Also, they map gives "Liberty" a prominence and location it does not seem to have. I wonder why they altered it.

I loved that they evacuated folks to "Greenville AFB". Greenville is just north, in Darke County. West Alexandria is in Preble, and Brookville and Dayton are in Montgomery. If they were to be evacuated to an Air Force Base, however, I imagine it would be Wright-Patterson AFB south of Dayton.

Cool topic, guys!

Whoops! Wright-Patterson is NE of Dayton, not S.

Map

Several of the towns on the map posted didn't even exist in 1979. Too bad they didn't remove those from the map they used. Clayton..est. 1998, Beavercreek est. 1991...

People?

People? What People?

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas; you've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone.
