Addendum, there is nothing on the back of the letter so I didn't scan it, but there is a watermark on the paper that I can't quite make out all of it

can't read top part of the circle
through the center "& Southworth" ??
Bottom of circle "Collection" ??

25% Cotton Fiber

Granite

Probably just the watermark of the paper manufacturer, but you never know.

Seems to be taking a while for the post with the letter content and scans to show up, probably because the 3 scans are over 9MB total (I overdid the resolution a little bit)

Try rescanning at a lower resolution. We probably don't need to see the paper watermark, just the letter text. At least for starters...

Okay, two separate suggestions here...

1) please scan the letter just so we can see you have it and what it says. A low-res scan (or simply type up the text) will do.

2) I found something *potentially* interesting about Southworth paper watermarks, though without more info from Burn28, we can't know if it applies. But worth looking at it, Burn:

Quote:
Southworth has been using date codes on most of our watermarked grades since at least 1941. The date code is a small straight line placed either over or under a letter or number in the watermark. The date code is changed after the last time the dandy roll (the device used to embed the watermark before the paper is totally formed) is run in the calendar year. The dandy is sent out and the old code is removed and the new code mark is carefully soldered in place. The reason for the date code is so that Southworth can tell what year the paper was made.

Southworth has received numerous calls asking if we can determine when a particular sheet of our paper was made. On approximately half of the calls we receive, we identify that the paper was made after the document states it was written.

One of the calls that Southworth received was from Mr. Marvin H. Dawson, a Forensic Document Examiner with Dawson Document Laboratory, L.L.C. Mr. Dawson wrote the following article explaining first hand how important a date-coded watermark can be.

Full article here at the company site: http://www.southworth.com/page.php?id=168

I was puzzled why an ARG would use such high-quality cotton fiber, watermarked paper to send a 'simple' letter. Now I'm just very curious if there's a clue embedded IN that paper, as Burn mentioned.

I got my mail for today, nothing from RP.

Those are AWESOME, great job (and find) Burn!

These designs are way more elaborate than I'd ever have expected, sweet.

From the article I linked above, see if you can find anything about an embedded date in the watermark in case it yields a clue.

Btw, I see you blocked out your name... cool... but can you tell us if it was addressed to you by name, or using your 'astronaut name' from filling out the mail-in coupon? Just for info sake.

Sure I hope I get this soon.

I typed this all in once, but it was lost because of the post size with the original scans. Sorry for the delay but here I go again.

Dear ----- (My Astronaut ID, Handwritten btw)

Do you want to join the fight to protect outer space? Do you have what it takes to become a certified Rocket Poppeteers Astronaut? Just like Captain "Coop" Cooper, Rocket Poppeteers Astronauts are strong and courageous. Only the most brave, true, and loyal candidates will be able to succeed. Are you ready to begin?

Remember, kids: Real Spacemen Love Rocket Poppeteers!!!

Rocket pop in lower left with "Super Speedflier Fleet"

RP Logo in the middle

Bottom right a star with "SPACE CHALLENGE! HOW MANY STARS ARE ON THE PAGE"

1) How literal do they want the answer? Flag patch on Coops shoulder (50), Flag on rocket ship in upper right (50), the RP Logo (22), anotehr 14 smaller stars scattered on the page, the one big star with the text, and the word "Star"s in that.

2) What to do with the answer?

It was addressed to my real name, and the letter greeted me with my Astronaut name
