Danielewski is an extremely skilled literary slight-of-hand artist. He used a number of flashy formatting tricks to lead your attention away from cardboard characters and a plot that is essentially lifted from the best works of Haruki Murakami and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It's not completely worthless, and his ideas are executed in an interesting way, but the spine of the story is not strong enough to support all of that weight.

The thing with HoL is that it's a literary trick. It's a puzzle that acts as commentary on pretty much whatever you want it to. It's a book that's more or less written to let you make it be about whatever you want it to be.

In order to achieve this effect, it has to be, well, less than substantive because if the author put too much in, it would hinder the "puzzle" aspect of the book.

It's good to read for Slenderman because of how it makes you look at story and the idea of "reader involvement." But as a stand alone story, you'd be better off elsewhere. Still, worth a read I'd say.

What do I want? For a series to be easy to follow...I'm looking at you EverymanHybrid. I got into EMH, but then it got too damn confusing due to the slough of multiple accounts on twitter, youtube, tumbler, and whatever else they have going. MH was perfect; Two youtube accounts, and one twitter to follow. At least TribeTwelve and Jonclubs have the youtube/twitter bit, easy to follow = more understandable = easier to follow = I like

I kinda love the way EverymanHYBRID's gone. It's a lot more involving than MH is. I suppose it depends on what you want from it; a light ARG/Chaotic Fiction or a YouTube serial.

I agree that EMH is waaaaaay more engaging than MH or TT (the latter of which is so linear that it bores me to tears). Keep it interactive and complex, boys!

I think the big problem most people are having with EMH is that it's an actual Slenderman ARG, not a linear series like MH. People have said before that Marble Hornets kind of 'set the standard' for Slenderman series'. Most people when they go to look for a Slenderman series are expecting something small like Marble Hornets, and not a full blown, interactive story like Everyman HYBRID.

I actually like EMH more than the other stuff BECAUSE it's complex. I'm on this site to play ARGs and that's what I'm getting with EMH. The different accounts spun together make it seem more real. *thumbs up* More complexity, please, everyone? Put some work into it! *whip*

Not really; I don't actually know why it's at this forum. >_>; It's Chaotic Fiction, I guess, with ToTheArk and his puzzles, but...

I reckon EMH really sets the standard for the series, now; I look back at Marble Hornets and...well, the acting's fairly alienating. And their Slendy is seen so damn much. And half the episodes are just Jay being an idiot and going into abandoned houses alone at night.

For everyone who said they wanted an ending with a semi-victory for the protagonist: http://fighthimuntiltheend.blogspot.com/

If you think about it, Tribe Twelve is doing a bit of ARGing, responding to peoples' tweets on Twitter. People have told him to go to the boardwalk and to go check out Milo's old house, and he said he is considering it. This makes me think that the series is loosely based on a thin plotline, but is shaped by commenters on twitter.

You know what I want in a SM series? Chicks. We're basically non-existant in the world of Slenderman.
I'd also like someone to make a long-term project where it's an established vlog that becomes a Slendervlog. EMH kinda-tried this, but it was pretty damn cheesy (though, that was kinda the point). I wish they had done some more realistic-style fitness vlogs for a while longer before the Slendy-shit went down.

If I ever get around to filming my series you'll love it. I am the only guy in the cast.

I agree. There's very few of us in these and when we are in them we're the typical victim......not kick ass heroines lol.

Hahaha. This is one of those moments when I'm glad my entire ARG cast is comprised almost entirely of girls. =D

Girl Powah! Whoo!

I've noticed this too. It's also always young people, but never too young. Slenderman's known for stealing children, yet oddly when a video camera's around he's only interested in men aged 16-24. I wonder why.

I have an idea for a series that at least has the two main characters being a man and a woman in equal shares... but it's just an idea so far, it could still be fleshed out in the future.
