Playing with the PDP-11

So, in the down time between clues... I was playing around with the PDP-11.

I might be wrong, but I believe that RSCOM8 and EXPCNV.dat are the only two things that work.....

Instead of typing .print before RSCOM8 I typed .comt and got a message saying File Read Error. If you type in the wrong beginning to EXPCNV.dat you get the same message. If you just type in something wrong you get a message saying Invalid Request.

Here's my thinking, If you type in the wrong comand with the right file, you get teh "file read error" message instead of the doesn't do crap message. Saying you're on the right track, but try harder stupid. Along those lines, I tried some other files I remembered seeing during startup. I came across two files. GMRF36 and GMRF71. Both appear to be text files. I can't get anything out of the GMRF 71 because the "1" comes out as a "y". But the GMRF36 gives me the "file read error" message.

Is this something we're missing? I am horrible with a computer. I thought maybe someone who is a lot smarter than me could figure it out.

P.S. please feel free to trout if this has come up before.

I think everyone has tried every combo each time the STIES updates. Nothing to see here, carry on.

Being a programmer i instinctively gravitate towards code. I went ahead and decompiled the flash file and you are indeed correct, there is nothing else that can be done with the STIES site. The only interesting thing i found was that the user that uploaded the code to the website was GJam. Now we just need to hack that computer and get the rest of the goodies. Very Happy J/K JJ i wouldn't want to screw things up for the rest. I'll just wait patiently for the next update.

Password anyone?
Found a password option

I don't know if anyone noticed that in the PDP-11 interface that if you clicked the left arrow at the bottom where the icons are, a new icon appears (a talk balloon with a # symbol in it) If you click on it a new window pops up and asks for a password... now I don't know if anyone else has noticed this or not, but if so, does anyone have the password?

Have you ever laughed so hard you vomited--without being drunk? Well, I just did. C'mon dude. An obvious trout (if I could find my keyboard to link you.)

lrdsatyr8;

I don't know if you noticed but I discovered something interesting at the top of the Unfiction forum page, and I think that it might be a clue. Notice where it says "unforum" all of the letters are not capitalized, and right underneath that word is this: "a.r.g.b.b." (Probably some secret code?) Confused

At first I thought that it might be a secret code but then I looked below it and there's this icon that looks sort of like a magnifying glass and to the right it reads "Search," and I thought, "Search for what—the a.r.g.b.b. Acronym?" Naw, that would be too easy, and then I used my cursor and clicked on the magnifying glass, and that solved the puzzle! If you click on it a new window pops up allowing us to search this website. Razz

Now that I've cracked that code, perhaps someone could help me with this: who is "?FAQ?"

newbie

No need to be RUDE to the new guy. Just nudge him in the direction of the prior posts. Toadfish112. Now, how hard was that? Don't dis anyone, you never know, they may be able to crack the next clue when the rest of us cannot. Razz

Simplicity;

This is an age old problem--new ones not reading the rules, the "game summary," or using the search function, so on down times my satire/sarcasm can get the best of me.

I don't know how long you've been on the forum, but it doesn't take long to see this pattern of newbies waisting time... perhaps after you've seen enough of these, you'll reach your annoyance level, as well.

Annoyance level

He, he, I believe is better we get some movement, and this time I hope real movement, before Xeno accidentally hurt somebody, and for what I've been reading I don't think that's unfair. Wink

Xeno,

I join the Unfiction some months before you, 4 months to be more specific, and I can see that only a few actually use, and by that I mean that only a few really know how to use, the search function, even before you crack that code. Laughing As a result we end up with tons of posts that only enlarge topics, contributing with nothing to the game, making hard for others to look through the pages, retro feeding the process, and with 8 (or so) months to go I imagine how this will end (a thousand pages? Shocked ).
I don't think that saying again "Please use the search function before post something" will help to solve this problem, for the numbers of times that I already see that being said here just for a very short time after someone gets trout for something that has being post two pages behind. Maybe if we create a "Press here for electrocute" button… Twisted Evil
Along with that problem I notice that we got those posts, mainly from guests but not only, that just throw a speculation for others to check it without any prior work trying to confirm/deny it. And I got say that it reeeaaallly gets worse in down times.
I don't want to depreciate the input made by others but we need, at least, make an attempt, however small, to confirm/deny the speculation, trying to really add something to the pool, and not making somebody do the job for you.
Just my opinion at the end of the day.

Sorry

Ok, so I'll admit that I've only posted a few times and am very new to the site. I know how to use the search but I don't. I can see how this is frustrating to those who work hard to figure things out only to be spammed with questions that were answered days or weeks before. I believe like a lot of us, I just really want this game to get going and don't like the down time. As for doing my own work, I'd love to, but I can't. I don't know anything. I can surf the net and play movies. Machinehead112 talked about decompiling the flash file... may as well be Latin to me. I lack the knowledge to research properly so I ask others. All I can do is play around on the PDP-11 (poorly I might add) and hope to find something or at least give someone more skilled that "ah-ha" moment. So, to all that have felt their time was wasted by my posts... I would like to apologize. I'm a newb.

I'm Sorry

Hockey,

Let me, at least try, explain myself a little.
I believe I can classified myself at the same group as you (newbies), sometimes I can't even play movies (okay, not that much Very Happy ). When I say that we need to do some prior work before post speculations, I didn't mean that we should go around decompiling flash whatever it appears (that sounds so great that almost makes me want to try it Laughing ), what I mean is that we should, at least, point a possible way through the speculation, in other words: give a goal to the pros, and not just post "Hey, what if we check for the name of the meteorites that hit the moon at the day of the chat and try to rearrange the letters in same way?" (Hey, that sounds a good idea, I think someone should try that Shocked ).
I hope I have explained better what I meant. Wink

i can see why someone would be frustrated if they felt like someone was wasting their time.

What I'm less clear on is how sarcastic comments about an honest mistake (or posts something deemed irrelevant by people who make lots of posts) accomplishes anything. I haven't read anything on this forum that gives people a free pass to treat people with disrespect, which I think happened a few posts ago.

I've searched the forum and haven't found this topic addressed. Can someone explain what the payoff is?

I stand by my vomit comment. I genuinely laughed (but did not vomit) and felt it was a trout (but did not trout). The truth is the dude will learn how to search the hard way now. Problem solved.

Hockey;

What you posted was completely different than what I was ribbing lrdsatyr8 for--the topic he/she brought up could have easily been found by just looking at the 6th topic (at this time) from the top of the "Topics" column, in fact it's called "[STIES] New Chat Icon [confirmed]" and what's so difficult about at least looking in the "Topics" colum to determine where you're going to post your comment? Would that be so hard?

Hockey, what you, like most of us, added has most probably been, in some way, shape or form, touched upon somewhere on the forum, but new ways of looking at things are always useful. I'm not a computer guy, and probably most of us consider it a big deal to just be able to hit the right keys most of the time. What I see that's needed, and most beneficial, is the willingness to look at the clues we all have access to, respectfully consider/review ideas that have already been tossed out for consideration by others, and then bringing to the table theories/ideas that are based on personal experience, or prompted by looking at others' suggestions/attempts. But unless we're going to respect the efforts that others have put into this process and at least try and gain a rudimentary amount of knowledge of what they've worked hard to contribute, how can we expect to be respected when we offer up something that we've thought up?

I think the "Game Summary" could be tweaked to make a few things better, but overall, the job that Multi-- has put into it has not got the due appreciation called for—it's quite obvious when you see comments where you can tell that the poster has not bothered to give it a look, and why? Do the newbies think that they are above giving someone else's efforts a glance? When I began on this forum, I took the time to read all ON TOPIC pages—now that is a daunting task, and perhaps that's where some tweaking could perhaps benefit the "Game Summary" but all in all, if newbies would at least look over the "Game Summary" we'd have substantially less idiotic comments.
