I got a similar vibe from watching this entry. I am wondering if it has to do with if someone near a camera is thinking of the Operator.

Some examples:
- Masky causes insane distortion and he thinks about the Operator all the time.
- Jessica caused slight distortion after a few nights (and Operator dreams), and severe distortion while discussing those dreams.
- Encountering the Operator in Entry 29 ended in total distortion blackout.

Some cases that could fall into this theory:
- The distortion in Entry 17 could have been caused by someone noticing the Operator out the window.
- Entry 5's distortion could have been caused by Alex's expecting to see the Operator.

I don't know why thinking about the Operator would cause distortion, but your theory does make sense (energy leeching off fear). There was little/no distortion in Entries 1,4,6 and it didn't seem like Alex knew what he was dealing with at that point.

I really like this theory, as well. Despite the fact that it's not yet clear how thoughts of the Operator can affect external devices (such as video equipment), this theory seems to make a lot of sense on every other point. Maybe thinking about the Operator allows some sort of connection between the victim and the Operator, thus allowing for increased distortion on the videos when the victim is near the camera? Just speculating, but I really do like that theory. With enough thought on other details, it could become quite plausible.

I always thought that thinking about the Operator helps him locate you. My reason for that is pretty much Entry 26. The Operator shows up right after Alex sees the camera which brought back memories without a doubt

The creators insist that their incarnation of Slenderman should be called 'The Operator' in order to differentiate themselves from the rest of the mythos.

Also the fact that "Slender man" has never once been mentioned in the series, and the closest thing we've been given regarding a name for it is "the Operator."

Just checking, but have the Marble Hornets creators confirmed that the Operator is the figure in MH to whom we refer as "Slenderman"? For some reason, I remember reading somewhere (maybe on a wiki) that we cannot yet assume that "Slenderman" in MH is the Operator which is mentioned in totheark's videos. I know it seems obvious that Slendy is the Operator, but I just want to know if anyone remembers whether or not this distinction has been confirmed by Troy and Joseph?

When they did their Q&A where people emailed them questions, they replaced all instances of "Slenderman" in the questions with "[The Operator]" and then referred to him as such in their answers. Pretty sure they did this late last summer, so it's fairly recent that people are calling him that.

Oh, now I remember seeing that. Thanks for the confirmation on this. Smile

I like that they gave him an original name, but I personally prefer to call him by his classic name, Slender Man.

I also quite like "The Operator" as a name for Slenderman. However, here is a list of names which, I have to admit, grate upon me:

HIM
The Tall Man
The Big Cheese
The Angel of Death
El Slendo
Mr Wiggins

I will allow "Musical Occurances" name of Locust.

He will always be the Slender Man to me. But The Operator is a badass name and I have no problems with it being his canon persona.

Well, I haven't been involved with MH for quite some time. A lot has happened. I just got caught up with all the recent videos and all I have to say is...WOW.

Still can't get over J just bitch slapping Masky. Much win. I'll have to try and get caught up with reading the various threads and theories on here before I can start to theorize again. Should be fun.

This is a topic which I've been thinking about recently but which probably doesn't deserve its own thread... how do people think Season 2 has been handling the whole interactivity thing? Or, rather, MH's pointed lack of interactivity?

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that MH isn't really interactive at all - the Hornets want to make an episodic story rather than a full-blown ARG, that's cool with me. But I think making a decision one way or another as to whether you're going to tell a story or run an ARG carries with it a certain responsibility to manage people's expectations accordingly. It would be frustrating for something to appear interactive but actually not be, just as it would be irritating if something terrible happened in an ARG because the creators expected its audience to intervene at some point but hadn't made the situation look interactive enough to prompt the audience to do so.

By and large, I think MH has been better at expectations management in season 2. One thing which irked me about season 1 was that all of the codes in TTA's videos were actually, when you think about it, kind of pointless - when did a message decoded from one of TTA's videos ever prompt Jay to change his mind about something or take a particular course of action? They served no purpose except to throw out pointlessly oblique hints to the audience, and in general if a character in a story is doing something which makes no sense except as a means of slipping information to the audience that's a sign that your story is kind of badly structured.

We haven't had anything like that this season, with one really kind of major exception. That's the code to the safe, which I think a very large number of people here thought was a puzzle which we would collectively have to help Jay solve, but in fact was an insoluble riddle which Jay more or less stumbled into the solution to without any input from us. To be honest, I was pretty disappointed by that aspect of Entry 33, because it meant that a plot element which seemed to suggest "this is something you guys can interact with" was actually never interactive at all.

Obviously it can be kind of hard to predict how the audience will take a particular aspect of a story (and goodness knows we're prone to zoom off down some weird tangents here), but I think it should have been easy to predict that people, on seeing a missing code, would think "puzzle".

Yes, perhaps we should have known from last season that MH wouldn't be very interactive. Except... the existence of the safe was revealed right towards the start of this season, and a new season is inherently an opportunity for the creators to shake up their approach and change the way they do things. I think we can be forgiven for jumping to the conclusion that season 2 might have been a bit more interactive than season 1; I just wish the creators would be a mite more careful about not giving the impression that there's a shiny button for us to push when in fact the button isn't actually wired up to anything.
