OK, this being the off-topic thread, I'm going to ask a job-related question that's been puzzling me for a while.

At least once a day, we'll have an undergrad come up to the desk and ask how he or she can use the card catalog, or even where the card catalog is. The thing is, I don't think I've seen an actual card catalog in nearly 20 years, since before most of these students were born. I'd assumed that even the tiniest libraries had by now switched over to an online catalog.

(We call them OPACs, because librarians like to give complicated names to simple things.)

Are there still libraries out there that use physical cards in a physical cabinet, or is "card catalog" just a bit of terminology that has lingered beyond its accuracy, like we still talk about dialing a number on a phone?

I for one have never seen one, but I'll ask my friend who is a major library junkie.

She seriously can spend a whole day at the library, and she ends up checking out the max limit of books.

Can't remember who asked, sorry D:

The Pogues! yes!

Also, I like plastic beach (the song) i'll have to think about the album as a whole, but i generally adore the sound of the gorillaz, and appreciate their lyrics.

I can't ever remember using card catalogs. Everything's online for us. Then again, we don't have a library, we have an IMC (some people get mad when you call it otherwise ha).

My mother is a librarian.

We have an old set of those card catalog drawers in our basement.

I asked why, and have never gotten a good answer.

You know those nights when she makes sure she has the house all to herself?

Never try to surprise her by coming back early. Especially if you smell incense.

I'm only 19 years old, but I remember card catalogs. O_o The last time I used one was as a little kid when I lived on a military base in California. I'm sure very few libraries use them anymore.

I actually kind of miss them though. =( I much prefer hard copy references for things than digital. *shrug*
