True but the biggest issue here is movies with a public domain creature often can only get rights to that version they made and for their script thus by making it difficult to creative copyright other portrayals by the collective of the internet.
Indie films seek to do things differently where as Hollywood doesn't. Hollywood could very well never want to touch the idea of Slenders because of the sheer amount of information and the lack of main stream markitability. If you can't market it to the masses in Hollywood the film flops and never gets greenlighted, in fact any movie with a differing type of idea that is innovative often is shunned in favour of movies that can be marketed.
However I can see a movie being possible if other things were thrown into the mix and it was undertaken in a approach that was different than what was expected...mayhaps a gathering of creepies with Sir Slender as the silent boss behind the action

I went grocery shopping today.

Before I went grocery shopping, I got lunch at the burger/hot dog/grill place down the street.

You know what I had for lunch?

A motherfuckin' buffalo chicken cheesesteak sandwich.
