oooh layton games are marvelous too! i want to play alan wake!!! ugh, but my laptop just doesn't support videogames. at all. Sad

I'm not much a movie buff. For instance, I haven't seen jurrassic park. >//< but i do own a couple of zombie movies and i've seen all of serenity/firefly, and i love the princess bride! and, uh, other miscellaneous movies just like evryone else but find few worth mentioning. i feel like the crowd here would appreciate shutter island? i also loved pan's labyrinth.

OH! Comic books!!! I lovelovelove comic books. Have been a fan of comics before the superhero movies started coming out. I'm trying to collect Sandman (by neil gaiman), but yeah i've read a good many comics, some popular some more obscure, but mostly older ones (read my dad's collection when i lived at home- he even ahd the very first printed ironman!!! i wasn't allowed to read that one because no one was allowed to take it out of the cover Sad- and yeah most people irl don't peg me as a comic person, but i figure here it's easier to tell what a geek i am lol).

books to read.hm. Spell for Chameleon (very good writing and plot, definite reread value). 'Man of His Word'/'Magic Casement' Series (very very good if you like fantasy, has interesting ideas about magic). As for SciFi, Orson Scott Card for sure. He's just amazing. Uh, 'Seventh Column'/'The Day After Tomorrow' (was published under two names, is a sort of sc-fi book written in the wwII/cold war era, as if america had been taken over by japan, and some semblance of the militry, mostly crazy scientists, must find a way to save america; emphasis on the blurring of magic and technology if technology is advanced enough).
Lovecraft has already been suggested, and I'm sure you've already read poe. I'm afraid I don't know too many horror books.
i haven't read much stephen king, but he's been exhalted a million times over.

Would I be inviting trouble if I made a Slenderman Mii?

Dude, the train scene is one of the most unsettling things. I watched Jacob's Ladder before I heard about Slendy; and it gave me the same fear. Albeit in a smaller dose.

Hehe; I stopped playing videogames. Dunno why. I much prefer stuff like ARGs and...well, maybe a bit of roleplaying as well. I got my World of Darkness GM onto the Slender Mythos. Very Happy

Yes, it was quite...... that.. that THING on the hobo. ;-;

I'm afraid I'm not much of a gamer... it used to be something I did with my dad. I am a huge reader, though, so here are some rad short stories for you sci-fi lovers (I took a "Philosophy of Science Fiction" class spring quarter):

All You Zombies
The Dandelion Girl

And my favorite poem just for kicks:

The Quiet World

Nerd Credentials incoming:

I used to read manga, watch anime (outgrew it, hence the no specifics). I read comics: Mostly notable stuff like Watchmen, Long Halloween, Killing Joke, BatGirl Year One, Batman Year One, Dark Knight Returns, Transmetropolitan, Preacher, Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, GL Rebirth&Sinestro Corps War, The Man Who Laughs, Gotham By Gaslight, Hush, A Serious House On Serious Earth, 52, Identity Crisis, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Kingdom Come, Red Son, Emperor Joker, Marvels (note the S), Marvel 1602, bits of Spider-Girl, Atomic Robo, and League of Extraordinary Gentleman.

I have played most Zelda, Mario, and Metroids. Final Fantasy (especially the Tactics spin offs), StarFox, Pokemon, the first 2 Fables, Mass Effect, KotOR, etc. Obviously the Modern Warfare games and COD Black Ops. I also love indie and freeware. From the Chzo Mythos to (my personal Fav) Spelunky. Transformice is also good (though it's online).

And that's before books, troperish, my intense knowledge of pop-culture and shit, my burning desire to play a tabletop rpg (no one here that's into that that much) And that's also factoring out my musical tastes. From HP Lovecraft to video game re-orchestrations I am 100% nerd.

Wow, that's awesome! This is my Zoey. Smile Also God of War sitting on my carpet, I guess.

Also, I agree with all of grieck's comics recommendations and I don't even know where to start. I love comics and the comic store up here is basically the only thing that makes college tolerable. And I am totally with you on the tabletop RPG thing. I joined my college's gaming group this year and I've gotten to play a bunch of games of Battlestar Galactica, some Arkham Horror (my favorite), and a shortened game of Descent so far. I'm too shy and not willing to speak up to get in on any of the longer games, though, haha.

^God of War is awesome. It fulfills my need for gaming and to show off my geeky knowledge of ancient deities.

Don't know nothin bout no comics except for Sandman and Watchmen and Kate Beaton, but has anyone read The Walking Dead? I've been watching the TV adaptation.

Sandman and Watchmen and Hark! a vagrant are all fantastic. I read a bit of The Walking Dead and then lost the files (I am poor and cannot afford to buy the actual comics don't judge me). But it seemed really good, and I've heard it's really good from other people.

@Soleil - I've been wanting to play Alan Wake, too. My brother swears it's the greatest game ever made. I'm gonna go visit him over the holiday break, and he promised he'd let me play. Very Happy
Also, Pan's Labyrinth is fantastic. Definitely in my top 10.

I'm adding books to the list as they're suggested; thanks to everyone who's provided input!

@grieck - I was keeping up with a couple manga/anime series (Hellsing & Death Note), but they both ended. I haven't really bothered with anything since then.
Sadly, the only comics I've read have been Watchmen & The Amory Wars.

@Mira - The Walking Dead is another one I need to check out. The TV series is absolutely fantastic. I was thoroughly pleased to see Norman Reedus in tonight's episode.

I've read the first arc of Sandman, amazing stuff. Comics was the easiest to list off ass I have a list of what's read on my laptop. Make no mistake though, Vidya Games and other things also contribute. Musicals, webcomics (xkcd, gunnerkrigg court, menage a 3, oots, and darths and droids being the big uns, with 8-bit theater also up there), I could go on. And as soon as I get a half decent mouse I'll be playing Bioshock 1 for the first time, on my laptop (no 360 here at college, and no money, but I found a new copy of 1 on sale at target for pc for $5..so I bought it, as my girl is obsessed with Bioshock and might wanna play)

Take note, the above is likely the only time you'll see me spell Theatre as I did.

So this is going to be one massive reply because I had to sleep for work, which is where I currently am.

I've got the Nobody symbol from Kingdom Hearts II. Embarassed My zombie bite kind of counts, too, as it's my BFF tat with my heterosexual life partner, and the only design we could agree on was something zombie-based, due to our hours of playing L4D.

If you've got an iPhone and will give a review of the game, I wouldn't mind getting out an early version, depending on what the boss permits.

The Nobody symbol is pretty awesome. The wife and I were going to cosplay as Riku and Kairi in Disney World this year, but we went as Colonel Mustang and Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, instead (Yes, Brotherhood, because it is amazing by comparison to the first anime. Read the manga, too).

If you guys are going to be the DMs, make sure to have an absolute blast with it. Controlling the plot can be an amazing time, if you make sure to adapt to your players' strengths and weaknesses. My brother once made a campaign that had his players fight through all the major wars in history. Never made it to his idea of WWIII, though.

On that note, I was taught the Rules of Gaming from Dave Arnesson, the co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons. It was epic. I carry the D20 he gave me in my backpack. Sadly, he passed away and I was unable to attend the dedication service seeing as it was held back at Full Sail.

I thought Shutter Island was fantastic. A little predictable, but still really well done.

If you want.. nerd/horror/humor- Charles Stross's Laundry Series would work. The setting: Magic is just a complicated and obscure branch of mathmatics. Thus making programmers and the like some of the most competent to handle it. Of course, anyone who discovers this is recruited by a supersecret government agency. Hilarity, with a side order of eldritch horror, ensues.

As a programmer, this sounds fantastic. I'll make sure to check it out when I get the chance. Thanks!

Have to say that I agree with nearly all of that list of graphic novels that involve Batman. Also, Watchmen was fantastic. I collected most of Ultimate Spider-man, all of Civil War, the first two trades of X-Force, as much of Sin City as I could get a hold of (read the rest online and enjoyed it thoroughly). Also, the entire series of The Losers was a rather entertaining read and ten times better than the movie.

The wife would like me to add that we cosplay as The Joker/Harley Quinn.

Game wise...let me try and list the notable ones that I enjoy. Zelda series, Mario series, Metroid series, Kingdom Hearts (really loving Birth By Sleep) series, Pokemon, Digimon World games, the Fable series, Mass Effect (including the first novel. Haven't read the other two yet), KotOR (Can't WAIT for The Old Republic), Ratchet and Clank series, God of War series, Infamous, Arkham Asylum, BioShock series, Spyro (before they made him look retarded), Crash Bandicoot (same as Spyro), Legend of Dragoon, Prince of Persia (all four games, have The Forgotten Sands waiting to be played), Assassin's Creed series, Borderlands (mostly for co-oping with the wife), Kirby series, Shadow of the Colossus, Half-Life series, Mega-man series, Alan Wake (mentioning this for the wife, who played the game non-stop from one evening into the next morning. I haven't finished it yet), and last but not least (and this is me recalling from memory all of these games, so I probably left out a bunch) Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath.

My anime choices are very specific. Outlaw Star, Elfen Lied, Darker Than Black, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Karas, and Trinity Blood.

For books, I'll try and keep it shortened to the more influential ones(maybe). The Mysterious Stranger, The Fourth K (and any other Mario Puzo fiction), The Harry Potter series, The Bourne Trilogy, Angels and Demons, The DaVinci Code, The Dexter Series, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit, Descent, Deeper, Year Zero, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy, The Darth Bane Trilogy, The Left Behind Series, Prey, 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Chimera, and the Covert-One Series.

Not going to get into movie selections or anything TV wise past my current favorite of Supernatural (and Firefly, since someone mentioned that).

As for your want to play BioShock, since I first heard of the game when it was originally announced, I was hyped. I got the collector's edition and own two of the Big Daddy statues (the first one broke). I own it for PC (CE) and got it for the 360 because my comp couldn't handle the game at the time, sadly. The setting alone is enough to enrapture you (no pun intended).

Oh, and, one last thing. Most of you have mentioned a lot of interested in reading Science Fiction/Fantasy genre stories, from what I can tell. In addition to the game I'm working on, I'm also writing my first novel that fits into that category.

Well, I think I should end this post for now. Sorry for the wall of text crit you all just received!

@ flyingwarhorse: why apologize for walls of text? haha, anythign concerning cool geekstuff should be as long as possible, obv. I bet your novel/game will be amazing, you'll have to keep us posted! It will be my first time DMing a game, but not my first tiem playing. I didn't learn from anyone epic like you did, just my dad, whom I've grown suspiciously un-fond of over more recent years. If I were you I'd carry the d20 around as well, practically a holy relic, it is.

Ah, I do love the earlier batman series! They have made Joker one of my fav. villains of all time! And Watchmen and League of Extraordinary Gentleman were very good. I particularly enjoy comics with a less mainstream plasticy kind of look (don't get me wrong I still read JSA and all), such as Hellboy, LoEG, Sandman, etc
Gunnerkrigg Court, Hark! A Vagrant? Now I know I'm in the right crowd. Hanna Is Not A Boys Name, anybody? Some a you more artsy or philosophy types read A Softer World, I'll bet; or Buttercup festival. Romantically Apocalyptic, right?
I haven't done any cosplay yet, but I'm working on putting together a few(Zoey from l4d, Heavy from tf2, ellis from l4d2, adelaide from HINABN).

It IS really good. If anything, just go into Borders or Barnes and Nobles, head to the graphic novel section, and just sit there and read what issues they have there for a while. They'll usually have all the books that are currently out.
