I think the hugging is all-inclusive, but I don't participate. You might all have cooties.

so i know we're doing our hugpile thing now, but something has been needling at me for awhile now.

has anyone read the books that the ring movies were based on? they were written by this guy, koji suzuki, and they're....a bit of a mindfuck. not House of Leaves mindfuck, but a mindfuck nonetheless. especially the one titled simply "Loop."

it's about a supercancer that has suddenly turned pandemic, affecting people all over the world for no known reason. the cancer eats away at its hosts at an alarming rate, and virtually everyone who contracts it dies horribly.

enter the main character, whose father has contracted the cancer. he wants to find a cure, figure out how to stop this mess, etc. and long story short, he finds out that the cancer is actually a computer virus. which is sadako from the ring. except sadako existed only in a computer simulation of life, and when scientists mucked around too much with the computer simulation, they brought her virus into the real world.

*shrug* it has little bearing on this whole slendybusiness, but i thought folks here might find it intriguing. i certainly did. i've read it half a dozen times easy, and i'm still chewing on it, psychologically speaking.

now that's real interesting. It seems like the idea was fairly novel and well done. A while ago, I thought I'd read the stuff the ring was based upon and I don't think it's what you're talking about, so I was wrong I guess (not surprised).
With all the sci-fi stuff I've read it seems a very plausible way to go, and people have been wondering if the whole computer thing would go out of control, but I think robot are more likely to do it than straight up computer a.i. (i mean something that can't move).
That was only semi-related to what you were saying.
yeah it sounds really cool and very interesting.

well, you may have read Ring or Spiral. the former took place entirely in the computer simulation; i don't even know if you find out it's not real until Loop. (it's been awhile since i read the others, so i'm not entirely clear on the details.) Loop is more tangentially related to the other books, like a batshit sci-fi/supernatural side-trip in the main arc. the style is almost painfully dry at times, but the story is more than worth sticking around for.

Not really relevant, but I totally bought House of Leaves yesterday.
<.< And I wanted to tell people who actually knew what it was....

Can you tell me if you notice periods or dots in unusual places?

I'll tell you why later. Wink

Re: Ring books:

I read Ring and Spiral, and I own Loop but never read that one for some reason. (I think I started it though). I'm glad you clarified because when I read your post I was just like: "that...is not how I remember those books going at all."

But knowing more about Loop, that's oddly...creepy/poignant. And you have convinced me that I need to re-read Ring and Spiral, and actually read Loop this time around.

More EMH-Slendy related: I'm hoping for HoL for my birthday. *crosses fingers*

Edit: @Ravenofroses: you described the illness as a super-cancer. Is it no longer a strain of Smallpox in the 3rd book?

I actually got House of Leaves a little while ago and started reading it recently. I'm on Chapter III and I'm really enjoying it. It is pretty creepy and the creepy part hasn't even begun yet. I just hope I can finish it, because recently, in the past month or two, I haven't been doing so good with long books.
