I missed the nerd/geek qualifications. ; . ; I'll just say I'm a big SF nerd and am planning to go into Physics. (Mira- I LOVE Heinlein!)

And my screen name is from a canceled TV show called Kings. I just liked the quote.

I have been trying to read House of Leaves for about five months now and it's kicking my ass. How can you read through that and not get so horribly confused? I start reading one of his footnotes and will have forgotten everything by the end of it!

I tried reading it once and failed. I tried to read as much as I could at a time. Then I tried again a while back. I read it bit by bit over the course of a week. I didn't force myself to read more than a decent chunk at a time.
I'm one of those weirdos who retains information quickly/efficiently though so I dunno if it'll work for you.

I was in the same boat a number of years ago when I tried to get through it. Liked the plot, thought the random side shit was cool at first... and then tiresome... and then an impenetrable slog.

I enjoyed the actual plot, but grew to despise the book and never finished it.

I agree it was experimental, and personally regard it as a failure. Then again, I feel the same way about Lord of the Rings.

Plot is important. So is readability. Coolness at the sacrifice of readability does not a good book make. (In my view.)

This is exactly how I feel (Fellow LotR hater! Highfive!). As time goes on the cool side stuff instead of getting easier gets more intricate and harder. It's really cool to see a whole different way of reading a book but there's a reason most books go from A to B. I am still trying to read it though, because I can't help but appreciate people who create new things.

My memory isn't very good. I can really only read a couple of pages, and a lot of the time I keep having to go back to remember what the narrator (either one) was talking about to begin with. It's been what feels like ages and I still am not even halfway. :/

HoL sounds like an ARG because you have to solve the puzzles to progress, and with its ambiguity, your own theorem is the driving force XD

I love HOL so freaking much.

I find it best to just tackle everything when you come to it, treat it like having multiple windows open on a computer. Follow one, jump over...try not to get too far behind on either(they sometimes sync up)

Somewhere deep inside, I have a strange desire to turn HOL into a stage play. I think it's totally possible.

I'd like to see that, even though I haven't read the book.

Mm. I think HoL works for me because i have a very.. visual memory. I've also been known to be reading two different books during the same period, so i'm used to two completely different plotlines.

I'll admit i never really went through the indexes the way i should have.

Honestly, I think HoL works on many levels. The stories it tells, on their own are good. The hidden story- which i may only be catching the hints of, is amazing.. the complex puzzles tossed in there... fascinating, but i could never hope to solve them on my own.

Childofatom: I love this thing we have going. <3 slendersquirrel.

as for when would slendersquirrel hibernate? NEVER.

Holy crap, I didn't get burned at the stake for that one. Highfive returned! (Although, I'm just a hater of the books. The plot & characters are cool, which is why the movies are awesome.)

As for the rest of your post... yeah, agree 100%.

i counter with
The EMH offtopic thred: somehow still sort of on topic sometimes, and soemtimes more on topic than the on topic thread.

Apparently two of my best guy friends were playing via phone earlier today. O_o I was... weirded out. Where the hell did this trend come from?
