Episode 7

 		Episode 7
We have made no progress on Episode 7. Here is my scanty analysis so far.
Potential clues:
1) Moon was the color of blood
2) Bones felt a chill
3) Swear there was someone close listening
4) Tom dusting furniture
5) Talking about ghosts
6) Night just like tonight
7) Sea as dark as wine
8 ) Black gates of Hell
9) Lucky Jack
10) Can't shoot ghosts
11) Ghost of Lucky Jack hanging
12) Cut him with a boarding axe
13) Cut him twice to make sure the deed were done
14) Afore the boom of the thirteenth gun
15) Scary rhyme
16) Cold up there, warm in the cabin
17) Wail off the port bow (actually Mulligan and the Parrot)
18 ) Little yellow... Not the Admiral
19) Treason
20) Treason Treason Treason
21) Would like a hug, I'm so scared
22) Ghosts knock 3 times
23) 2 knocks, 3 knocks, 4?
24) Ghosk is come
25) Screaming
26) Crothers is shot
27) Birds is not ghosts
28 ) Parrot from Hell
29) A fine mess
30) Treasure be gone. Crothers be gone. Tutty be gone.
31) Lightning flash, Srike the ship with lightning, see if I care
32) I'm getting the bad end of this lot.


Interpretations:
7) Wine-dark Sea, 16th Aubrey-Matin novel
8 ) Hell Gate, the strait south of Randall Island, and by extension the area around it
9) Jack Aubrey, hero of the Master & Commander novels
11) Possibly reference to 11th novel, which has a "hanging judge" in it
13) Possible reference to joke about Walter O'Malley, Brooklyn Dodgers owner who moved the team
14) Thirteen gun salute is traditional British salute to an Admiral; The Thirteenth Gun, 13th Aubrey-Matin novel
18 ) The Yellow Admiral, 18th Aubrey-Matin novel
19) Treason's Harbour, 9th Aubrey-Matin novel
20) Either just parrot talk or 999 (hm, just noticed parrot-pirate like window sill-sele, probably nothing though)
31) 16th or 10th Aubrey-Matin novel, Wine-Dark Sea or Master and Commander, I think slightly more likely #16, since it is the ship specifically that is struck in that novel, apparently
32) Maybe New Lots Avenue station, end of 3 line

Few of these seem linked to a location. #13 could mean Ebbet's Field. There was a lot of discussion about the treasure maybe being "buried" in a storage facility. Safeguard Self-Storage at the former site of Ebbet's Field shows up at the wrong place in googlemaps, on top of the apartments at Ebbet's Field, and also with the "wrong" address of 111 Empire Avenue (Nelson?). I called them, "to ask for directions", and they told me that it shows up there because everything on the former site of Ebbet's Field does. Actually, this is not quite right, I think, Google may have put it there, but I believe they could have it moved if they wanted to, though they might not know that. They also said they occupy 111 Empire Avenue as well as 115 Empire Avenue, which is their address on Safeguard's web site. Conceivably, the video makers could take advantage of the placement of their marker the way they did the placement of the Subway shop marker in Forest Hills, PA.

If the treasure actually is there, knowing that does not help by itself, we would need to figure out where the key was, or what to say to the Safeguard people to get to it. I don't think it is, because this is only the 7th episode. It presumably could get us close (maybe 250 feet) from the treasure, but I don't see very well how to follow the last episode's clues within the storage site.

By the way, the Brooklyn Dodgers played their final game at Ebbets Field on September 24, 1957, which the Dodgers won 2–0 over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Incidentally, one prominent feature at John Paul Jones Park near Fort Hamilton is a large cannon. It happens to be a Parrott cannon, the name of the manufacturer. Just possibly the "firing" of the Parrot in Episode 1 or the Parrot shooting the pistol in Episode 7 could be a code for that. Obviously, the Episode 1 possibility, while it fits nicely by itself, would be way out of clue-type order. If the Episode 7 incident is a code for it, it could be in order, with the fortifications in Episode 6 referring to Hamilton, or to Wadsworth across the Verrazano Narrows. John Paul Jones, of course, is called the Father of the Navy. I don't see a "ship" specifically at the park, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was something on a monument there. There is a mast or flagpole thingie, maybe a "ship".

 		Just a random thought: maybe the numbers of the Aubrey-Maturin novels are mentioned in a significant order? 16, something, 11, 13, 18, 9, 16... Not sure where that gets you, but if you're really looking for storage-locker codes or something along those lines.

Yes, I think that is a good idea. The order probably means something. Converting to letters does not seem to help. They could be used in combination with the "lottery numbers" from the phone message you get from Episode 6. Those are also all 21 or less. Thus it could be the other way around, and we are supposed to convert those into the title or something of the appropriate novel in the series. That does not immediately lead to anything clear either.

It seems to me the novels, their titles, their sequence, or something else about them has to be the clues (as opposed to just another homage). There isn't much else in this episode visually or verbally. There are the facts: Talking about ghosts, they get scared, Crothers is shot. There are some phrases that could be meaningful in which I don't immediately find a connection to the novels: "The Moon was the color of blood", for instance. I only wrote so much about Ebbet's Field because the joke possibility was the only thing that led much of anywhere. It was only in one clue, and that could easily be something else.

In the era of Ebbets Field, the Pirates home field was Forbes Field. The press box behind home plate was known as the "crows nest".

12 & 13) I believe that these clues refer to the subway line forking offf into three different directions. For instance, look at the Southeast portion of the A line. It gets cut once at Rockaway Blvd. and then again at Broad Channel.

23) This is similar to episode 3 when they count from 1 to 5 and then mention the Port of Cortland. I believe that the numbers once again represent something on the subway. Maybe the 2, 3 & 4 lines. Maybe they ride the 2 & 3 line and then switch to the 4 line.

32) I like your answer, although I am unsure of which subway line we are on.

I believe that some of the homages to Aubrey-Matin are also clues. For instance, #18 is an homage to The Yellow Admiral, but I also think that it is a clue. Mulligan says "Yellow" and the bird says "Not the Admiral". Therefore, we must be talking about something else that is yellow but is not an Admiral. How about a yellow subway line?

Also, you did not mention the "chairs". This is just too random. We normally don't think of ghosts as sitting in chairs. There must be some chairs somewhere along our route.

Yes, this bothers me. Clearly they are meaning us to think of the novel title, but the bird does say NOT the admiral, so having thought of it, it seems we are supposed to reject it.

Alright, so what is yellow? Subway lines, again maybe. But we got off the subway in Episode 6 (if not before), so back on again?! There is the Safeguard Storage storefront, that is yellow, quite strikingly yellow. Not "little" though. So I think we can keep that in mind if we ever figure out how we could get there in the first place.

Yellow submarine, first free-association thing I get, what else?

I don't see the significance. There are chairs in the cabin, okay. Mulligan says the ghost is "sitting... right... there!" and it is the parrot sitting there. I don't see any reason why the sitting in a chair part is unusual. The parrot has to be somewhere, and not the floor, too low. So Mulligan isn't going to say the ghost is standing there.

Was there something about the chairs that I'm not getting?

That whole "little yellow" exchange just seemed like a Simpsons reference. Mulligan's voice changes and sounds more like Homer's. Which is not to say it's not a clue. If we were in San Francisco, it would be an obvious hint to get on the BART!

Yes, I see what you mean now. Ok, so someplace warm, maybe the same as the place next to the chairs. Are there bus-waiting shelters with heaters and chairs or something like that? Or an ice-rink warming house? And maybe the place is underground or below something else, because it is "up there" that it is cold. Or all three of these points could be separate clues too, but it feels like they go together to me.

Any thoughts on the meaning of Tom dusting?

I believe Homer's usual phrase just before throttling Bart is "Why you little...!". It's in like 80 episode scripts. This is close, though not exact. And Mulligan never gets his hands on the Parrot.

 		Mistake in Transcript
After Crothers asks for a hug the video switches back to Mulligan and the bird. The transcript has Mulligan saying "Jam it you!" I can't make out what he says but it doesn't sound like "Jam it you!" Any thoughts?

It is "Shut it, you!", I think. It is the same thing the Captain said to Mulligan one time, though that probably isn't significant.
