The ARGFest 2011 thread

Could it be? Yes! Continuing my tradition of way-too-early ARGfest threads, I present to you ARGfest 2011! It's never too early!

We had a great success this year with pretend ARGfest, paralleling real ARGfest. It was a blast!

Also, I'm officially putting my weight behind getting the 'fest in Austin. It's high time—a wonderful city for the event, and just as hot as Atlanta. Cool

Discuss away! Only 360-ish more days!

Yeah, it's way too early to start this thread...which of course means we should wildly spec away.

The topic of "where should it be next year?" came up during this year's ARGFest, and Austin seems to be on the short list...along with Orlando, Las Vegas, Toronto (yes we all know it's in Canadia), Atlanta (yes, again), and <INSERTOTHERMIDWESTERNCITYHERE>.

And I'm just throwing it out there now...if it's gonna be in Austin, process of elimination says that the only feasible month is October...so please make it the 1st or 3rd weekend...Halloween is the 4th, and both my wife and daughter's birthdays fall during the 3rd Shocked

Fall would be a better time of year for Las Vegas as well. While hotel prices are the best during the summer, not sure how many can handle the 105-120 degree heat.

Hahaha, I've been checking back here every day since ARGFest started, wondering when the 2011 thread would show up. It took much longer to show up than I expected.

doubtful we are going to get a non-summer argfest, seeing as how every year a large portion of people say "i can't, because 'i go to/my kids and their' school".

i still say, there is a rather large interest in a toronto fest, however im not going to push for it until we all recover a bit more financially.

Well... here's my thing... while I'd love to have an ARGfest in TO, I can understand the concern about pricing, for a number of reasons.
But with that in mind, I can't help but constantly think about how a TO argfest, official or not, could come to fruition. What I've been thinking of therefore is how to go about making it a feasible event, even if it's considered somehow a sister-event, like an Argfest Canada or something.
I mean, regardless of opinions on the matter, there's the Passport thing, the cost of travel to TO, the time if taking ground transport across the border, exchange rates, acceptance and sponsorship, etc etc. There a number of hurdles just with location, whether large or tiny.

Nonetheless, the dream is still alive Smile. For my part at least, I'd like to get in touch with some local ppl (Stitch? Phantom Compass? I don't live in TO remember, so more local than me would be good =) and hopefully see if we can brainstorm some ideas and whatnot, see if it's even feasible to try to plan one. Having never done an RFP before, let alone for argfest, I'd love to see the Atlanta one, to at least have an idea of where to start, where to go, etc. IF there's enough support, I'd love to run with it... (I'm already contemplating themes and logos and whatnot, heh)

That said, I wouldn't be devastated if TO isn't the next location. Personally, I'd vouch for San Fran again - that's an awesome location!

I would love to go the ARGfest 2011! It will be a challenge for a student like me to get the money (again) together. It is very expensive to fly from Holland to America or Canada, especially in the summer.

But I will take this challenge and use my creative brain to get money. Perhaps I should make a business of making customized sock puppets. Very Happy

Ohh btw, I am already missing everyone I have met at ARGfest 2010 Crying or Very sad

Now that you've had this year's ARGFest in the Southeast, I figure it won't be down this way any time soon.

I should start an ARGFest 2013 thread and *really* start lobbying for Miami.

As one of several 'Canadians' read: Not a real canadian but one living there nonetheless, I would like to lodge my vote for Toronto.

That being said, I can understand the technical problems that may arise because of this. I'll be happy to go anywhere within the states or canada really Smile

EDIT: Forgot to mention how awesome it was to meet everyone at ARGFest btw. It was my first and I had an excellent time. Great to put names to faces.

I don't think there's going to be a "vote" for the next ARGFest location. Last year the planning committee took in structured proposals for ARGFest locations. If they do the same thing this year (they may not - we will have to wait and see), and you want ARGFest in your city (or any city), then get ready to get boots on the ground, send in your proposal, and do the work to make it happen. That will mean locating venues, planning and coordinating events with the committee, etc. Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile (Nighthawk, this means you will need to do more than "lobbying" for a Miami ARGFest. Just sayin'.)

thebruce, I think it would be awesome if different regions had their own local ARGFests, and I don't see why that can't happen. Especially in Europe and Canada! It opens up more options - someone who can't travel to one might be able to go to another, especially if the events are held at different times of the year. (If this happens, and if I have the funds, I'd likely attend more than one event in a year.) We do this in another community I belong to, when we celebrate the anniversary of the founding of our site. We hold the events/parties at different times, so people can attend both if they want, in North America and in Europe.

I know. I downloaded the application and was going to do it, but I couldn't think of enough good convincing things to say about Miami. Razz
