BTW there's a track on the new soundtrack "Neodammerung", which is German for "Twilight of Neo", and refers to the 4th opera in Wagner's Ring Cycle "Gotterdammerung". The music makes explicit reference to a particular scene called "Siegfried's Funeral March" where the hero has been killed by the duplicitous Hagen, half-Nibelung son of Alberich. Right afterwards, Siegfried's girlfriend rides her horse into his funeral pyre while wearing the ring, simultaneously flooding and burning Valhalla and bringing about the end of the world.

Draw your own damned conclusions.

I thought I was the only music major here. Yes, Wagner is an aquired taste, but I do like his work.

Anyway, I think it's safe to say that "Navras" is my favorite Matrix song ever. And I think it should be nominated.

So how does Trinity get a horsey to run into big flames???? Very Happy

Seriously, that's some trippy stuff. Also, here's some fun speculation: Neo is the unbalanced equation that the Architect has tried to balance, right? To balance that equation, the Architect resurrects Smith, frees him from his agent role, and makes him the key to balance out the equation and bring harmony to the Matrix, in essence, he tried to have them cancel each other out to bring a harmony to the world... Of course, Smith goes insane and brings the equation back to the opposite end of the spectrum. If Neo goes down, so does Smith, and vice versa.

So in essence, the Architect created the Smith we see today. Just an idea, and has NOTHING to do witht he above post. But I had to say it somewhere... Smile

I think you're a bit blinded by our stereotypes of moveis and "happy endings" here... Gotterdammerung was all about the fall of Valhalla, and thus the destruction of the world of men. Keep that in mind.

Now, how do you solve an unbalanced equation? You make one side equal the other (if we follow that line of logic, Neo and Smith will continue fighting each other ad infinitum because they are 100% equal)

We know that the matrix is gonna stop, and kill everyone in it becuase of Neo's choices: the Architect told us this (mind you, he may have been bluffing). So the matrix floods - be it due to Agent Smith or some skew-shiff processor cycle. We also know that Zion lasted 72hours last time (Enter The Matrix) before it went down... so Zion burns... are we seeing a connection here?

It's the new Gotterdammerung.

Or the Neo Gotterdammerung...

All we have left is wordplay...

Well, I think it likely that Don Davis was seeing parallels in the movie the WB never intended. He's a hardcore post-modernist composer when he's not scoring or orchestrating for film, so he probably knows all about Wagner. Plus, he's a really witty guy, so maybe he just threw that in for the 2 or 3 people in each crowd who might get the joke. A lot of his cue titles are clever sub-references as well.

Just saw a new trailer for Revolutions (new to me anyway) during the Cavaliers-Suns basketball game. It focused on Trinity and how much arse she is going to kick. Really lends credence to the spec about Neodammerung. And there's a brief shot of a flaming hover ship crashing into something. Could that be Trinity's horse?

Not to belabor a point hardly worth making, but there are actually many references to Wagner's Ring in Davis's Matrix music. Occasionally in fight scenes, you will hear a dull metallic crack coming from the orchestra - this is the sound of a bass drum combined with an anvil, an effect first used in Das Rheingold. The repetitive 16th note violin lick that starts the movies is lifted from Loge's music (which becomes the "fire" leitmotive) except he uses it in retrograde. Ha! Don, you crazy cat, sub-referencing Schoenberg, Wagner, and the East Coast Postmodernists...Plus, I hear he does a mean Cagney!

zion lasted 72 hours? 3 days? christ rose from the grave for 3 days. i think 3 is definitely bringing GOD into the real world ... watch m2. theres 'fate' in the matrix which is really NOT fate but twisted control... and theres FATE in the real world, which morpheus discusses in 2, and so does merilvingian... EVERYTHING has REASON............ and though im an atheist, i love it that htis movie's shoutin GOD GOD GOD, as GOD makes the tightest stories. (donnie darko, solaris, (macbeth possibly?)etc)

Actually, if memory serves correct, that weird dude said 7 hours, not 72...

That's pretty close the the explanation given in "the making of"
Quote:

Just this bit that's different.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
As quoted in "the making of revolutions"
Neo and Smith are equal and opposite
Neo is the Positive, Smith is the Negative
One cannot exist without the other
Smith is the result of the equation attempting to balance itself

I assure you it's 72. I got hooked on this game over the summer on my brother's GCN. A black girl running around kicking ass... finally a hero I can relate to.

This is all fine and dandy people, but what did you think of the music itself?

Just found out the text to Revolutions score, Niobexrev. Not sure if this is the same text as used in Navras, but it is the text used in Neodammerung. It's Sanskrit, and it's from the Upanishads.

From the Brhadaranyaka Upanisad 1.3.28
Asato ma sad gamaya
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya
Mrtyor mamrtam gamaya

From delusion lead me to truth
From darkness lead me to light
From death lead me to immortality.

Isa Upanisad 11
Vidyam cavidyam ca yas
Tad vedobhayam saha
Avidyaya mrtyum tirtva
Vidyayamrtam asnute

He who knows both knowledge and action,
with action overcomes death and with
knowledge reaches immortality.

Mundaka Upanisad 2.2.5
Yasmin dyauh prthivi cantariksam otam
Manah saha pranais ca sarvaih tam
Evaikam janatha atmanam anya vacah
Vimuncatha amrtasya esah setuh

In him are woven the sky and the earth
and all the regions of the air, and in him
rest the mind and all the powers of life.
know him as the ONE and leave aside all
other words. He is the bridge of immortality.

Katha Upanisad 6.7
Indriyebhyah param mano
Manasah sattvam uttamam
Sattvad adhi mahan atma
Mahato vyaktam uttamam

Beyond the senses is the mind, and beyond
the mind is reason, its essence. Beyond
reason is the Spirit in man, and beyond this is
the Spirit of the Universe, the evolver of all.

Katha Upanisad 6.10
Yada pancavatisthante
Jnanani manasa saha
Buddhis ca na vicestate
Tam ahuh paramam gatim

When the five senses and the mind are still,
and reason itself rests in silence, then
begins the Path supreme.

Mundaka Upanisad 2.2.8
Bhidyate hrdayagranthis
Chidyante sarvasamsayah
Ksiyante casya karmani
Tasmin drste paravare

And when he is seen in his immanence and
transcendence, then the ties that have
bound the heart are unloosened, the doubts
of the mind vanish, and the law of Karma
works no more.

BTW - I've not seen the Revolutions Soundtrack, but there is now a track listed on DD's website called Das Banegold, yet another Wagner reference (Das Rhinegold). Hehe, what a smart aleck.

Does anyone recall the name of that gloriously amazing song that played during the end credits? It's been stuck in my head ever since I heard it, and I wasn't sure if it was on the soundtrack.
