Lastly, I found a fraud alert reported about the "official" website, dated this October.

My gut says it's just another iteration of people wanting the books to be real, maybe harmless nor maybe not, but unlikely to be a "good" ARG. You did say "dubious" and I will agree. Hosting on GoDaddy isn't necessarily a bad thing, but rarely a sign of professionalism.

Further searching here yields a spotting of the site in October 2013. I think your trail ends here.
