Yeah, the regular pattern stuff seems quite prevalent, but since there are only 6 combos it is posible that this would come up. I'm going with barcodes for now.
[EDIT] there are some weird old barcodes out there

Tried colour inversion earlier, didn't seem to give much of a fresh perspective......

Another possibility is that it's some sort of filter. I tried overlaying it on itself (at various offsets), treating white as transparent background to see if any obvious messages appeared, but I gave up after a little while.

I don't think it's a code using those 6 squares. If you print out the tapestry and look at the 8th square over from the left (going in a row, obviously) you'll see that the triangle is messed up. It does not completely go from the top right down to the bottom left. And when you begin to examine more squares, you'll notice more like it.

On a side note, should I mention my post over in the related thread over in General?

Nursie, I've seen those types of barcodes before (I have a similar one on the back of my driver's license), but one question. Why would they give us a barcode? We have no way of reading it. And why would it be so big?

I was secretly hoping I would fins a software barcode scanner that works on jpgs's.

D'oh, that sounds pretty far fetched to me too now.

The more I think about, the more it seems like the "slide puzzle" kind of idea seems right.

The fact that it's so big makes it easier to manipulate graphically, and makes a "smoother" final image.

I would say it wouldn't be a bad idea to try taking those vertical strips and moving them up and/or down to see if anything starts to line up...

braille?

back to the old idea of braille again, attached is a pic of the white spaces in tapestry, broken down I defenitly get some letters in Braille. Not enough to make me sure I'm on the right track though. Posting here in case anyone else has more knowledge of Braille to fill in the gaps.

Updated files on Marcus' account. Looks like he found someone (Dimitri Moraitopoulos) that found James Avery.

There is also some weird file called tapestry.jpg that looks like it coudl be a stereogram.

You're missing 6.jpg in your original post.

Grid?

Ok, tried the 12x12 theory... but when a 12x12 grid is laid over the tapestry, not all shapes line up. Either we have to draw manual lines to cut up the boxes, or they're really not 12x12 divisible...

Pic attached for reference.

Suggestions?

It also reminds me a lot of the work of Escher.

There must be a pattern somehow but I still haven't figured it out.
(starting to feel a bit like Max Cohen in 'Pi')

I've been playing in photoshop - to no avail... I've tried layering, flipping, blurring... you name it, and I can't see anything.

also been thinking that the white spaces might overlay some other pic or text doc, and the stuff that falls in the spaces would be the clue. Would need to know where to overlay though.

I know I'm coming in late here, but thanks to the glory of time-zones I was well out of it whan all of this went live.

Where I work produces (among other things) barcode scanners. Nursie, Primal, the Barcodes you are thinking of are called Datamatrix and PDF417, and neither type looks like the tapestry pic.

For those of you who are interested, you can go to this website and download a program which lets you create your own barcodes in the majority of commonly found-formats.

It might be a barcode of some obscure, rare variety, but I guarantee you you'll never be able to scan it with anything on the market today. It's really very interesting just how much data you can pack into a 2-dimensional barcode like a PDF417.

It is also possible that it's a scrambled 2-D code. For an example of a PDF417 symbol, see the document I'm attaching. If anyone cares to De-scrabmle it (IF that's what it is) I have all the resources here to read all the major codes.

I'm really sorry to shoot that one down, becuase I have no alternative suggestions as to what it might be at this point in time...

Well, the other thread in general discussion about the 6 pictures of James was closed, so I'll spark some conversation here about them.

Weird observations:

1) The guy in the background

What's up with that? He doesn't seem to notice or care that Avery seems preoccupied with something, let alone that Avery is diving into the mud.

2) The white head in the background

What's up with that profile head in the background. As was pointed out in the other thread, it looks sort of like the Paintover "IC" picture, and there appears to be a faint "IC" on the wall back there, also.

3) What is the guy behind Avery doing in pic #6?

It looks like he's turning toward Avery and he has something in his hands... What is it? A camera? A light orb?

4) Why is Avery diving into the dirt/mud?

Yeah... why?

There is an arrow pointing down diagonally under the IC - I'm betting he's at a hotel and that's the sign telling you where to get ICE.

Here's a slightly sharpened section of picture #2 with a couple of oddities noted.
