Hold on - the ZIP file was called DIMITRI.ZIP, right?

So maybe this is a message from Ormond to Dimitri.

Spec:

I KNOW THAT MY DAD TRUSTED YOU AND I COULD USE YOUR HELP
Ormond and Dimitri are family friends
I DON'T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO TURN. IT HAS BEEN TOO LONG- I SHOULD HAVE HERAD BY NOW.
Avery went overseas to do some work, but only Ormond knew about it. When Avery failed to make contact for a specified period of time, Ormond freaked.
I KNOW THAT THEY ARE STILL SET THERE, BUT WHERE.
Not sure about this. Perhaps we either have a couple of letters wrong, or Avery went to place "items" in various points around the world?
DO YOU KNOW? HAVE YOU HEARD? CAN YOU HELP?
Obviously Dimitri is in on this. I might suggest Dimitri is an Aquapolis employee, whch means that this is too related to the Aquapolis disasters.

Whew! I'm tired, and I have to go to bed. Nice work, everyone!

As for the last two chars, it is either an informal signature, or more likely, a stub to say end of message or just random filler.. That would be my best guess.. Once again, good work chances end, I finally feel like I added something to the whole puzzle solution angle of the game :)

Yeah, a signature (initials) sounds right, but those should be common chars, like MO, JA, etc.

What made you think to split it 18x18 btw?

Well, I found the braille idea, and expanded the dots. Everywhere there was a dot, I could fit an exact pattern (basically a circle w/ a few dots misplaced). Turned out to be 18x18, with 1 pixel break between them (except for every 3rd break, which was 2 pixels). This was while I was still doing braille. Once I zoomed out, I noticed that the patterns started matching exactly...

Also, if it wouldnt be too much trouble another version of the pseudo text picture with seperate symbols for the punctuation marks would be nice if anyone is feeling motivated :)

If I get back here and no one's done it, I'll go ahead and edit mine.

Yep, guilty... I wish. I bet the PMs are going to hate us for solving it this fast. Seems like this puzzle took quite a while to make...

I'm good for speculation only tonight, it seems. Excellent work on the tapestry file, Chancesend.

How about the idea that this is from James' son? Dimitri appears to connected to Beth and James (from Beths email), but is also connected to Ormond (from the MLO Metadex calendar).

Seeing as his parents are no longer around (and Dina and Ethan are only just on the verge of remembering something), if he did not get 'erased', he would surely be lost and wanting to find them? He may have got Dimitri on the path, who then ended up with Ormond.

Who wants to create a TrueType font for this? We can then print this out on tshirt transfers and wear them about.

They could say "Metacortex Official ARGer" And then the secret message.

The tapestry pic might be solved, but what about the other six pics? What are we to make of them? Should a new thread be opened for speculation on them?

[Final Edit]

The other photos...

Well ignoring the main subject of the photos.

Clues:
The 'barbed wire' stuff is in all the photos, and seems to indicate the were all taken in the same place (in some the bacgrounds are not obvious.)

In one of them (5), there is definitley someone in the background. In (2) and (3) there is three options for this background man. Either:
A) that is his hair line is poking up from the bottom of the images.
B) That is his big white head fading away ala ghostly effect
C) He simply isn't there.

Very Happy

2 Questions:
1) Can you explain exactly how did you solved the puzzle? How did you changed the black and white boxes to letters? And how did you changed the ltters to other letters and get a good sentence?
2) How do you that James Avery is the missing person? And who is Dimitri?

Sorry for my english....

[SPEC] Message stuff

chancesend wrote:

So maybe this is a message from Ormond to Dimitri.

Or a message that Ormond is passing on to Dimitri on someone else's behalf: We know there is a message in there, and its content is asking for help in finding missing persons. We know that message is either going to or coming from Dimitri. We believe James Avery to be heismissing, and clearly the images in the zipfile are of the same individual. We know from Beth's description in her email that Dimitri worked with Avery and Beth on the Aquapolis in Europe. Thus, Dimitri might be one of the last people to have seen Avery before he vanished. It's reasonable to think the message is to Dimitri, asking for his help to find heismissing/Avery. But who is the message from?

Gray Area has got the right idea. It's well supported by the quote in the message 'I KNOW THAT MY DAD TRUSTED YOU AND I COULD USE YOUR HELP'. Ormond is the go-between being used to facilitate communication between Avery's son and Dimitri. Plus, Ormond is looking for Avery too (based on his notes on the heismissing image in his DexTop), so he has an interest too. The question remains, who is Avery's son?

[EDIT: This can work another way. The go-between could be Dimitri, passing the message from Avery's son to Ormond. That would put Avery's son in Europe I guess, with Dimitri acting as courier since he conveniently was a taking a trans-Atlantic trip. But I like it better the other way]

We may be able to find out who Avery's son is if we can ever determine with certainty what those last two characters are, assuming they are initials. Reading your posts about the decoding, it sounds like it was a substitution cipher that shifted after each sentence? Is there a reliable pattern that can be found in that shift so the initials can be predicted with some certainty? If so, we may be able to determine the author of the message, and learn the identity of Avery's son.

OK, here's how to go about solving the puzzle:

1. Notice that there are several large white spots in the tapestry (about 30) that are very large white holes. It was initially speculated that these were braille dots. However, no orientation of them made any sense.

2. Notice in these large white spots do not have exact sides. In fact, every one of them has the exact same "error" (ie - the lower-right hand corner of every white dot contains a couple of pixels "out of place").

3. Fill these dots with a different color, and notice that anything larger than a 23x23 octagon will not fit in every spot. Between each row/column of dots, there is either a 1- or 2-pixel line.

4. Draw lines between the columns as noted above, and notice that many of the blocks are the same. Also notice that many blocks are simply a rotated version of another block.

5. Substitute the symbols for letters, and then solve the cipher, if necessary.

On the topic of the T-Shirt idea, I know I would really love to have a copy. I have quite a few sources for making T-shirts. The way I see it, if we really want t-shirts, we have two options:

1. Get 24 people to order a t-shirt. Then, we can get htem silk-screened, and they'll be about $10 each or less, which includes S/H.

2. Set up a CafePress site, and get them ink-jet transferred. No minimum amount of people, but they'll cost around $17 each.

I'd be willing to set up the CafePress shop, since I already sell some artist merchandise through there. I'd also be willing to order the silkscreened shirts, if we have enough people interested. Private message me if you are interested in purchasing a t-shirt of this design, and if I get roughly 24 people, then I'll go ahead with the silkscreen stuff...
