Photoshoot Ideas?

I don't know if this should maybe go in the fanart thread instead, but I just got my replacement camera battery, so I'm trying to set up a Halloween weekend [whichever night everyone is free] photoshoot for our Marble Hornets group. We've got a few maybe-could-pass-for-woods cluster of trees around campus, and there's a few buildings we wouldn't be able to access the inside of, but the outsides look fitting.

We have a Masky and a Hoodie for sure, but I recently lost all the numbers in my phone so The Operator 'actor' is still going at The Operator for Halloween, but I'm not sure if I'll actually be able to contact him in time for him to show up. I'm sure I'll see him at the costume contest though. We have a guy who looks a lot like Jay, and we're trying to convince him to just come out and take a few shots even if he doesn't know the series yet [he likes the ideas but hasn't had time to sit and watch them] so we MIGHT possibly maybe not sure have a Jay.

So, does anyone have any ideas for possible poses for the shoot? I've got a rock, a pill bottle/pills and maybe some of Alex's crazy drawings if I have time. I might even be able to get my hands on a secondhand camera, but I'm not sure if I'd be willing to pay for it just for a shoot.

Dear me sideburns on Tim are scary. They probably are busy with all the groupies at GMX having fun.

Photography stuff

Hey there! I'm no expert, but I am a student in the art of photography Wink I assume you're shooting digital? What type of camera do you have?

I must admit, I've never been too great at poses, but I think I've really improved in the past few months. Allow me to muse a little.

For Masky/Hoodie:

You could always do a close-up on some of the important objects with a character in the background. Like say, maybe have the mask lying on the ground with Masky sitting next to it, but crop his upper body out or something.

Can your Masky/Hoodie climb trees? It might be cool to do a shot that just looks sort of like an artistic Woodie shot at first, but then in one of the top corners you just see one of them sitting there. Oh, you know when that might look good? Sunset. Some time when the light comes through the trees. Or not, if you don't want the silouhetting effect.

Adding on to that last bit--I know it's usually the territory of the Operator to stand in the background, but Masky and Hoodie could always try their hand at it Razz possibly with Jay or someone in the foreground to draw attention away.

If you want to do a rocksmash, I'd suggest taking to a high place or just staying on the ground. If you're going to a high place (like say from a tree or big rock) I'd suggest taking it from the back, so we see the back of Alex/whoever's head and Masky on the ground, but him looking up. If you do a ground shot, I'd suggest angling it up so we see the rock in his hands but not Alex/whoever's face. Whether or not Masky faces the camera is up to you I guess.

For the Operator:

Okay, the "Where's Waldo" shots? I honestly don't think you can go wrong with those. Sure, they've been done, but that's what we know and love Razz as for other things, it's hard to get shots of the Operator without getting too close and ruining the effect (I don't know what your costume's like, but generally you want to keep even the best ones kind of far away, don't you?).

What might be cool is if you have someone sitting on the ground and just the Operator's legs a few feet behind them, especially if you can get one of your friends to conjure up a terrified/despairing look. Laughing or maybe have take a picture of the Operator from the side, standing in a clearing of some sort--as if his head's about to snap back around ala entry one, and the cameraman/woman is trying to avoid him by hiding behind the trees. Or maybe do a combination of the two, someone hiding behind a tree as the Operator's legs walk by.

For Jay:

The problem with Jay is that due to his everyman status, you can't really do a "Jay costume" because it's always just going to be a "some guy" costume, no matter how much your friend looks like him (no offense or anything). That's why, with him, I think you should try to include props/Masky/Hoodie/Oppy in most of the shots. That being said, it doesn't mean you need to do some dramatic shot of your friend getting punched in the head, it can be subtle, like a Where's Waldo shot, or even him finding the mask hanging off a tree branch or something.

I'm kind of a stickler for reaction shots. This is probably going to sound stupid, but I think a cool shot for Jay might be something like him in the action of turning around. Considering the "Oh Shit, It's Right Behind Me" nature of this series I think it might be a cool little nod Laughing oh, you know what might be cool? Having him in the action of turning around (facing the camera) while in the background also facing the camera, Masky/Hoodie/the Operator is there. Like, he turned the wrong way or something.

Want angst? Lean him against a tree. In my humble opinion, nothing says angst like leaning against a tree. Especially if he tilts his head upwards and closes his eyes. There. Instant angst.

Maybe you could sort of swing back around behind Jay as he sits on the ground or something, maybe have Masky/Hoodie (or even just their legs, depending on the angle) standing behind him. Or hiding behind a tree, head sort of turned in that direction, maybe tilted slightly towards the camera. Wish I had an example shot because I'm pretty sure I explained that weirdly, but I'd have no idea how to find it.

If you do shoot film, I think it would be cool to have a regular shot of your Jay or someone normal and then have Masky or Hoodie move through to create a kind of ghosting effect.

In photoshop, definitely try out some visual tearing and distortion shots by cutting the photo and amping up the exposure or whatever. If it's foggy that day, you should use a blue filter or something Very Happy but don't go overboard or it'll look like The Ring xD

Wow, that's the longest post I've ever made, haha. I guess I like to talk about photography a lot... Embarassed So yeah. I hope you like some of these and sort of understand what I'm talking about...xD I'd be happy to try and find examples for you if something is unclear. Wow, these are probably dumb...really sorry if they come off as weird or stupid or anything.
Or if I treated you like someone who didn't know the first thing about cameras D: I wasn't trying to come off that way, I just feel sometimes like I speak in an obtuse manner and need to explain a lot for clarity.

Good luck with your photoshoot! Bring water and a tripod (this seems obvious, but you've no idea how many times I've forgotten mine *facepalm*). Oh, and coats, it's getting cold out.

EDIT: Geez, what a long post! D: I will completely understand if you skim. Wow.

Shout out to rand__althor and anyone else who was on/listening to the Marble Operator podcast last night. I was "Guest 3" typing smartass comments into chat during recording, and finally signed up for this forum after being prodded to de-lurk by rand.

So, yeah. Long-time lurker, first-time poster, blah blah blah. I'm following MH and TT.

I'm using a Pansonic with a Lumix lens. Thank you so much for all the ideas!

Yea, the Jay thing was more of a "This would be cool, why not?" idea. The idea was the brown hoodie/green hat/camera. I was planning on doing just what you mentioned, the group thing. It's like some other costume's I've done: a blonde guy in a brown suit is just a guy, but get him in a group with a twin sister and a guy with long black hair and a trechcoat, and anyone who knows the series can recognize them from Monster.

I love the reaction shot idea!

I don't have a tripod though... I should get one.

More photo stuff xD

Ooh, nice Very Happy I've never used one of those, but I've heard good things about them. Aren't they compatible with Leica, too? Imagine if you could get one of those! :O I'm a Nikon girl, myself Wink haha. I have a few cameras, but my baby is the DSLR3100. It hasn't let me down yet. I'm currently looking for a macro lens on ebay, so if you happen to stumble across one...xD

Ah, no problem. I tend to ramble, so I'm sorry it's so long D: it was kind of an interesting exercise trying to imagine all that, because most of the time (unless I'm doing a specific theme) my creative journey is "Hey, that might look cool. Do that."

Oh, nice! Didn't even think about the hat! But yeah, that's always the problem with those. But I'm sure you're creative enough to find away around Some-Guy-Costume syndrome!

Truth be told, I took the idea from an earlier shot I took about a year ago ^-^; it had my friend hiding behind an abandoned stone structure and looking around one side as someone leaned against the opposite side. Our school computers got their memory wiped though and I'm not sure I saved it D: I'd post it if I could find it...

Tripods are a good thing *nods* until recently I would just pile stuff until I got a tower of miscellaneous objects that was the right height xD for outdoors shots I would use tinkertoys. I had a tripod, it was just 70 years old (came with a SpeedGraphix I got from my great grandfather who was also a photographer Very Happy) and terrible. Got a plastic one from Best Buy for my birthday and it's awesome! So yeah, might be good to invest in a tripod. Or bring along tinkertoys. I used those during my final photo exam last year and got a high grade still xD

Ugh, rambling again. So sorry Embarassed I guess this is alright though, it is the OT thread.

Is anyone else sighing and trying to ignore all the posts about GMX? Sad I really wish I could have gone, so seeing the stuff about it kinda stinks.

I live nowhere near that state.

Yesterday I was in Chem Lab and I was talking to my partner about going to see paranormal activity 3 and then he brought up Slenderman. HE DID. I was so shocked that he knew about it because I've only met one other person who did when I didn't introduce them to it. He told me he had watched all the entries. He also informed me that an operator symbol is drawn somewhere on campus. So that's what I'm doing today. Even if he's lying I need to explore around here anyway.

Ramble, ramble, ramble.

Does the character Amy show her face in the videos because some posted the picture of her of the wiki so it could be fake picture.

If I remember correctly, she turns the camera towards her face for a second before she goes to annoy Alex in Entry #26.

I just watched it to check - at 3:11 in #26 she points the camera at her own face.
