I got a gut feeling that Phil is Texel.

I could be wrong, but from Texel's post I have the impression that s/he is a teenager too - stuff like "whoa!", "so weird!" "crapola" - Phillips' style in his emails to Beth was quite different from that.

Yeah, thinking about it, I guess you're right.

Too many people are disappearing, so that's not enough similarity.

edit: format

We'll know if Beth receives a rolled up newspaper with a Chicken of the Sea can in it.

In other news, I've had the Kasparov/X3D chess match on ESPN2 on for the past 2 hours. At first, it was so ludicrously boring, I was laughing my arse off, especially at the announcers:

"Kasparov has been sitting motionless for 15 minutes now! The tension in the room is so thick you could cut it with a knife! I will now set myself on fire! AAAH!"

But then someone said, "what does it mean that computers have proven they can beat the best humans!" Suddenly I thought of all this stuff. Maybe X3D is just early AI. If IBM comes out with a chess playing computer called Bi66er, I'm going to freak out.

But this is a Phil thread, so here's some absurd and wildly speculative Phil related jibber-jabber.

"What if Phil=Beth? Maybe by day, he's a cross-dressing computer programmer, then by night, he's a schizophrenic Tyler Durden-esque journal editor?"

Yeah, that's very scary. Machines can do many things better than humans can. What scares me is that all the human vs. machine things are kinda plausible, because subconsciously humans will know that AI are better than they are in some ways...we'll be threatened, we'll attack at the first sign of trouble without stopping to think...gah, if only we were smart enough to incorporate things like the Three Laws into AI...but, no, it'll go from "Hah, there's nothing to fear, nothing will ever happen..." to "Kill them all! Earth for humanity!" or something like that. If we're the only form of intelligent life in the Universe, I feel bad for the Universe.

Er, I'm not usually that pathetically and implausibly pessimistic. Ignore me.

Right, Phil!

Yes! And maybe he doesn't know it! I can prove it! He keeps writing himself e-mails asking himself where he is, and everyone knows that talking to oneself is a sign of incipient insanity...ergo, Phil is schizophrenic. Hah, just try to argue with that. Go on, I dare you.

Sleep deprivation is a very dangerous thing.
