Re: Critics wanted for Slenderblog concept
Because no matter how stupid it is, an idea always sounds good to the person who came up with it.

Remember cause and effect. In horror, there is no beneficial supernatural power that does not come with a terrible price. Your character is invisible to the Slenderman, BUT.

I don't know what. Just keep that in mind.

Perhaps he can't see her because he's already taken what he needs from her...

the motivation is an interesting one.

Slendy knows there's someone there, but doesn't know why he can't sense/see them, and is taking his frustration out on their family in the hopes it will reveal them. Hence, She is brought deeper into her situation simply because she wants the carnage to stop.

I, for one, like it. You need to be careful with how you're going to work that angle though, imho.

You know, maybe everyone she knows is slowly being stalked and killed by Slenderman (like Lewa suggested), but she can't figure out how to help them. I really like the idea of having to choose between intervening (and possibly still failing to help) or watching others suffer unspeakable horrors.

Yeah, that's kind of what I like in this sort of stories; the protagonist might be able to more or less shoulder the burden of making these decisions for a while, but sooner or later they end up having to choose between two unacceptable alternatives. Reveal themselves and get into a confrontation which they (and the friend they are intervening on behalf of) can't possibly escape unscathed, or don't intervene and let something completely unacceptable happens? There's no right answer there, and no way to avoid one or the other of the alternatives...

I most definitely want to avoid creating a 'Mary Sue', in that vein I was thinking of finding someone to sort of beta for me, if I go through with it, so that I'd have another perspective to keep a watch out for signs of that. I also figured that even though Slenderman couldn't see her, he'd still affect her. Y'know, paranoia, maybe something like Slendy-sickness, or even being Touched or Moved by accident while getting in between him and a victim. If I wanted to go the way of having Slenderproxies, perhaps having them see her, and having a big threat from that.

I think that the litmus tests and so on can be fun and all, but that the best way to not make a Mary-Sue is to genuinely not want to make one, so you're on the right path already. Very Happy I'd be willing to beta for you if you like. I have a bunch of experience writing; I'm studying it now at uni, in fact. (For the record, best subject ever.)

Having her still get hit by slenderside-effects would be pretty sweet. I love the idea of her getting accidentally shoved aside by him - or maybe, as well as imperceptible, she's intangible to him and he walks right through her. That would be pretty horrifying on her end. Having a proxy who could see her would up the ante a lot as well - and maybe it's not someone really obvious in a mask, but someone who looks otherwise normal, someone who she doesn't realise is a proxy until they're chasing her down the street yelling about the vengeance of the Noodly One. Something like that would catch the reader off-guard as much as the character, which is getting increasingly difficult to do in Slenderman series.

I have an idea... if the character is anything like myself, then the very idea of Slender Man makes them want to know more about it, even more so the fact that slender man seems too ignore them.

If something like that was happening to me (I'm pretty much pitching my idea that I scrapped) I would become obsessed with wanting the answers, which would indeed put me in constant contact with Slenderman. Even endangering the lives of those he was stalking because..... how am I suppose to understand him if I don't witness what he does.. how he does it, why he does it.

I can't understand him, if I can't see through his metaphorical eyes.

Just reading this thread made me want to write some dribbledrabble about it. Curse you people, curse you.

Oooh, how about this? He can't see her so long as she doesn't intervene in what he's doing. So she's left with having to choose whether to stand and watch as he does something awful, or getting involved to save whoever he's stalking, but putting herself in danger by doing so.

HOLYCRAP YES!

So~ I think I'm actually going to go through with this. The comments and thoughts and such you've been throwing me have been fascinating, and a huge help, thank you so much! I'd love to keep hearing stuff, since it's going to be a while before anything is actually posted. I'm going to start developing the character, her personality, history, etc. I already have an idea as to what she'll be like, I was thinking of her as something of a tomboy, a girl who is 'one of the guys'. Also, plot. That's kind of important, wouldn't you say?

So I'll start working on that, but as I think I said before, I'd like someone to beta for me. Someone who could check the writing, make sure it sounds right (y'know, stuff like the writing making her actually sound scared should the situation call for it), bounce ideas off of, tell me when I'm heading into Mary Sue-dom or cliché-land, that sort of thing. A person who would also be willing to give me a kick-in-the-pants would be helpful as well, since I admittedly have a habit of dropping off the radar sometimes.

Compulsory Basket, if you're still interested in beta-ing, I'd love the help! If you'd like, feel free to PM me or whatnot. This will be my first online project/story blog/whatever you'd call it, especially working with someone else over the 'Net, so Advanced Warning: I will probably say or do multiple ridiculous things (apologies in advance).

If anyone is interested in collaborating, maybe running a connected blog, or just helping with the story, feel free to ask. This is all new to me, something of an adventure or an experiment, so I'm pretty open about this.

Thanks again, everyone! You really are awesome!

I'll beta for you. If you didn't already have solid ideas for how you want the blog to run I'd also act as a potential creative contributor but more than happy to beta for you. I want to be involved in a blog beyond playing along.

JUST ONE THING I THOUGHT OF!
(All caps gets all attention)
Anyway, if you're going with the 'Only visible when she interferes' you have to make show how in some kind of way Slendy seems surprised. Like he stops what he's doing for a split second and looks dead at her, and carries on a little slower. And the eventual sanity decay would also have to be slower. Or faster, but of a non-Slendy related kind and more of a guilt kind. Just saying. Oh, and look up some character-development tutorials on Google if you're worried about her becoming a Mary-Sue. (Helps me all the time.)
