Final Countdown - VA/DC/MD Team

Ok since I don't see one for us I am making the thread.

People:
Hayvock
CalebH2010
TiggerMan
OU812
Lck282

Place:

Pick one please.

Now I know when the 2012 dead drop was done Sony picked a train/metro station comic book shop. Of those of us going where do you think we should meet up and venture to where the event will happen and who will bring what?

OU812 here

IRL: Brian S.
Locations: H - Silver Spring W - Rockville
Avail: 8:45 AM until Noon
Equip: 2 Mac laptops - iPhone; 5 seater car (can drive), Pair of 2 mile handheld radios, a bike mounted to the roof of my car

I recommend we divide into 2 teams focusing one team on Dupont/Gallery Place and another team focused on Georgetown/Foggy Bottom.

If there were more than 6 of us I'd suggest a different strategy, but I think 3 person teams makes the most sense: 1 driver, 1 computer support, 1 runner (we are in a city guys - cars suck)

The drop is very likely at a bookstore/comic book store in the central business district based. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the Borders on 18th and L or the Georgetown Barnes and Noble. That being said, these are complete guesses. But I think we can say that Tysons, Maryland suburbs, National Harbour are right out.

So how do we exchange information safely? I won't post my contact info on a public board.

I've got a macbook pro, an ipod touch, an HTC Evo 4G and I can probably get a couple of walkie-talkies. As for locations, we wait until the location and times are posted, then head out to them like an hour early? For possible drop locales, perhaps union station, alliance comics in DTSS, borders in DTSS, B&B in Rockville, Borders at White Flint.
w can exchange info on Facebook. I'll create a group there, it'll be private. It will be the name of this thread.

EDIT: Group is created.

I'm in the Hampton Roads area in VA. Hopefully it will be close enough for me to go, but I doubt it...

I tried to add you earlier, but it said that you couldn't be added. I'll make it an open group, so you can join.

EDIT: The group is now public, so you can join. I tried adding you again Hayvock, but I keep getting the same message that says you can't be added.

As much as I'd love to see the drops occur in Silver Spring or Rockville (since that would be close to home) - I don't think that is going to happen. Maybe it could, but realistically, it will happen in downtown DC because of the concentration of people. Union Station is possible.

I'd definitely add Kramerbooks to the list. Just above Dupont Circle; been there since before first Tron; well-known DC meeting spot, non-chain bookstore. Open 7:30am to late (1:00 am I think). They don't like to have you linger in the cafe since seating is limited so not a good hangout-for-half-a-day spot and wait for the start.

Also, Reiters Scientific was always a favorite of mine and fits in with Flynn's books. Great science, engineering and math books. It's not were it used to be on Penn Ave when I went in the 80s but I think they are still around. yep, just checked and they are now at 1900 G St., NW. another old (since 1936? way before my time.) non-chain bookstore.

Map with locations

Chapters on 11th just above Penn, NW and Olsson's Books and Records are local DC stores. Olsson's is a chain but local I think. Both these were around in the 80's but may be closed now. yep, Olsson's is closed. very sad. Chapters website is down so doubtful they're around still.

I thought about museum bookstores I've been to like the one in National Geographic but that seems much less likely than a normal bookstore or comic shop. Same for the Library of Congress...

For comic shops, I always went to ones closer to home. Big Planet comics in Georgetown is the only one in DC I know of.

Same for arcades. I used to go to the ESPN Zone downtown but it's gone now. Anyone know what arcade was the cell-phone in DC dropped at?

I don't have a fb account but will see if I can create one tonight. Is there an alternate way to form teams and exchange phone numbers, email addresses?

Also, does anyone think it is worth a walk-by at these places on Tuesday looking for Tron stickers on lamp-posts?

I'm in Baltimore, for what it's worth. I've got a mac and a cellphone and all day off.

My next couple days at work are starting to get pretty busy, so I'm not sure how easily I'm going to be able to get away if something does happen.

What's the plan on getting the word out if something happens in DC? I work/live in Rockville and am pretty close to several Red line stations.

Great job on this!!!

I wonder if Politics and Prose was around back in the day. I don't want to read too much into the clue, but I know Reiters and Afterwards/Kramer Books were around. The Borders at 18th and L was there when I moved here in 1992, but not sure how much before that it came into existence.

The Barnes and Noble in Georgetown was a movie theater in 1992 (KB Cerebus).

I was just discussing with a few people - and they kept saying it 'should be' Politics and Prose simply because P&P is nationally known for it's book signing events. Heck, even JKR did an event there.

IF you are in the area, a walk by couldn't hurt.

Bookstore Listings

Everyone else is doing it so why shouldn't we. I handicapped the list by having the oldest bookstores float to the top. Alright, here is a bookstore list for the downtown DC area:

Politics and Prose (established 1984)
Connecticut Avenue and Nebraska

Idle Times Books (established 1981)
2467 18th Street Northwest
Washington D.C., DC 20009-2003

Second Story Books (established 1973)
2000 P St. NW
Washington, DC 20036

Reiters Science (established 1936)
1990 K Street Northwest

Kramerbooks (established 1976)
1517 Connecticut Ave NW
Washington, DC 20036

Books a Million (established after 1996)
11 Dupont Circle Northwest
Washington D.C., DC 20036

Borders (established approx 1991-1992)
18th and L
Washington DC 20036

600 14th Street Northwest
Washington D.C., DC 20005

Olsson's at the Landsburgh
418 7th Street Northwest
Washington D.C., DC 20004
----Olsson's final location is now closed due to the death of the founder

Barnes and Noble
--- Many many locations in the DC area including:
Chinatown, Georgetown, Penn Avenue, Union Station
