Final Countdown - New York City
This is a place to discuss a Final Countdown strategy for New York City.

Hey All!

I just wanted to start a thread specifically for New York City, for the Final Countdown event. I've seen some info elsewhere on here, but thought it might be helpful for those of us in and around the Big Apple to have a thread just for us.

I've seen a suggestion for meeting at Columbus Circle. Are there any other ideas or suggestions for this?

Also, it might be helpful to start a list of those planning to participate.

So if you have anything at all to say regarding the above or related topics, post it here, and I'll do my best to keep track of it all, and present it in some sort of organized fashion for you!

Thanks!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Originally the majority were planning on meeting at Columbus Circle; however, this has been changed to Union Square. Specifically, at Cosi, across the street from Forbidden Planet.

The list list of those planning to be in the city (wherever they may be) so far is:

Toadman
Opticon
Broklynite (I believe he suggested the Columbus Circle meeting place.)
what0080
stevedk
samkate
CheshireFlynn
JohnVision (That's me!)

Let me know if I missed anyone!

Here's the thing (I'm in, by the way). Columbus Circle is good because we can all meet under the globe, and it is easy to find our way around the city from there because of the number of trains. It also has the 66th street Barnes and Nobles, which is right next to the IMAX theatre.

On the other hand, union square has Barnes and Nobles, the Strand, Forbidden Planet. Of course it is more difficult to get anywhere else from there. What do you folks think?

Nope, I think it's just us. So, where do we want to do this? Or do we want two teams? Should we exchange phone numbers?

I can be on the street at 5:30. I think it would make sense to have 2 teams . one at union sq and one at columbus circle.

Any thoughts?

2 teams sounds nice we should get a pair of walkie talkies to communicate to the other team faster

I can probably leave work a little early if need be but I don't think 42E would do anything until after 5 being that most people will have either school or work during the day.

We can coordinate tactics via im, pm or text message during the day once more details arise and plan accordingly.

I'm down for meeting whoever, wherever as soon as I can that day.

I'm sort of expecting it to all go down at around 11:AM, when the countdown is over. I'm guessing there will be some sort of hint regarding the location on FlynnLives.com.

Also, again just speculation, but perhaps this won't be a big, well-known establishment. During the "Street Scene" event, instead of a big arcade in NYC (like Dave and Busters) the location turned out to be a sort of obscure (but still cool) arcade in Chinatown.

Anyone with ideas on this?

Hopefully my theory is correct and they don't start until later an I can meet up with you all.

Damn 42E if they punish me for working!

So... has there been any consensus on where to meet up and when?

Okay, let's be logical.

During the pitcell, they used cinatown arcade, which I effing KNEW was going to be the site because it is the last classic arcade left.

So, what would they want? A bookstore, that was around back then. Not a lot of those around. A specialty bookstore? Even fewer. Most of them are mystery bookstores and such- not the kind of place for a pseudo-science-like book reading. I do not think that it will be the 66th street barnes and nobles- that place opened in the 90's as I recall. But the union square barnes and nobles is a classic place, they have readings all the time, they'd be up for something like this, fun area to run around in, etc.

I do NOT think that The Strand is likely. Too damn crowded and cramped, the people that run the place are pretty nasty and wouldn't be up for something like this, and I never heard of them having a reading.

Now, a video game creater writes books about science, computers, the future. Does he go to a bookstore? Could be. But video game nerds from back then? Hm. Comic book stores have readings all the time. Forbidden Planet is also around Union Square. He has a book tour, but note that the note does NOT say that they are at bookstores. Personally, my store of choice is Jim Hanley's but whatever.

I know I suggested Columbus Circle, but the more I think about it, the stronger I think Union Square is as a choice.

The one drawback is that it is harder to access the westside subway if we end up needing to use it.

I propose that we should meet at Union Square, possibly in front of Forbidden Planet- much easier for us to locate one another. That said, I think it is too bad the Virgin Megastore is gone. Dress warmly, it snowed today and I doubt wednesday is going to be any better.

I will be there wearing my Flynn Lives T-Shirt under a couple of layers. I am 6'4" and wear a felt trenchcoat. I might wear one of my buttons to identify myself. I am anal about arriving to places early, so I'll probably be there around 10:30.

Lastly, the area has a few net cafe's should we need to use one. Does anyone have a netbook they are willing to bring? I'll bring my laptop if nobody else will, but the thing is a tank and weighs 11 pounds so I'd rpefer not to. I don't have tethering on my phone, but if anyone else does, we could use that at need. Does anyone have tethering/a netbook/ wireless broadband?
