@MrV

here in FT. Worth

a country radio station had a game a long time ago - and they announced that they had hidden $100 bills and a check for $5,000 inside a secret location

i was about 11 at the time. we figured out it was at the down town library and showed up about an hour before they announced the location. we saw a guy on a cell phone put something into a book - and walk off - i couldn't find the book on the shelf and kept looking around in other sections. about 10 min later i was on the 2nd floor with my mom and 2 younger sisters (we're small kids). we literally saw a stampede of people come rushing through the doors and start tearing the library apart looking for the money.

i saw a few homeless dudes walk down the isles just dumping books onto the floor looking for the money. one person knocked a few of the entire shelves over to speed up the process. it was insane! we left for our safety at that point as more people came running off the street to get after that $$$

scary people

That's a horrifying story, mainly because a lot of library books are rare or out of print and are irreplaceable.

I can't believe someone thought that was a good idea. Good god.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was just so they receive their package, but JIC it turns up again might as well keep track.

I wonder if they repaid the library for the damages? Even though it's kind of a fading format, people will still turn out in droves for radio contests. There was a fatal one in northern california where people drank a lot of water and had to hold it (Hold your wee for a wii), one woman drank too much and died.

That's awful. I HIGHLY doubt that library approved/even knew about it.

Part of me is glad I'm not in LA right now. I can imagine it getting ... ugly.

Then again, I'm also incredibly jelous of anyone who gets their hands on one of those books! Too cool.
