Leading up to a specific event?
Sorta crosses into (not for profit!!!!) viral marketing territory, I suppose...

Hi Y'all! I'm new here and relatively new to ARGs in general and I have a big job on my hands.

The boyfriend and I take Halloween very seriously. Like, really seriously. Like we're planning our party already. This year, we're hoping to come up with a creepypastalike backstory to theme the party around, and we're toying with the idea of turning the lead-up to it into a sort of mini-ARG. There are a lot of hurdles to deal with, but we're not taking it too seriously, so if anyone has any words of advice or input that would be grand. Sorry if this gets long, it's going to be a big job and takes a little explaining...

Firstly, we know all the players, and we have to be characters, as ourselves. We haven't cooked up our story yet but the idea is that the whole thing would lead up to the official invite/event page for the party, to launch in game a few weeks before the event itself, it's a little more like viral marketing in that regard I guess, only we're losing money instead of making it Razz

We do have a small group of people who can help us out by being "characters," with us, and at least one person that almost none of the other party guests know who can help behind the scenes. (Who is also a rather gifted IT tech. bonus.)

Since we're dealing with a controlled group of people (our invitees) the initial rabbithole is going to be something that makes it super obvious that this is a game, e.g. a blank facebook invite with just our names and the date and a link to our blog/site/whatever we use to start the game- anyone who has come to our parties before will know that it has something to do with halloween, but we're planning on denying knowledge of the blank "event" (or page or what have you) until we edit it into the "real" event page (and maybe even after.) Complicated, but this is the best way we can think to invite people, get them to save the date, and still have plenty of time before the "reveal"

We're pretty sure our friends (at least some of them) will be interested and play along. The good news is most of them already know each other after a fashion and are concentrated in a fairly limited geographical area, so physical clues are definitely a go.

Like I said, this is just for fun, and I know that it's a weird and complicated idea, and that everyone is going to know exactly what it's leading up to, it's really just another element to increase the badassery of our halloween party and entertain our friends. Thanks for reading, everyone, I've already gotten a lot of good info from here, so hopefully it will be fun!
