Now the question is - Was this left by one of the (surviving) cult members - or is one of the crew infected?

I think it is time to go back to the revealed truth and see where we are in the ritual.

The Black Book. I think that what is written in there is still happening despite and/or because of the actions of our heroes.

Edit: (My analysis of what is shown.)

II First Movement - This is slenderman presiding over the cult. You see the dead body of KindVonDerRitter below i.

II Second movement - the other cult members being marked for death while one of them being singled out with the sight/knowledge.

II Third movement - I think this is slenderman killing the cult members.

Looking at III First Movement - time is passing and I think they need to watch out for birds at the moment.

Edit2: Further analysis

both the bird and the skull have the X over the right eye...I think we should watch out for whoever is starts to film again first. because he is going to be "touched" by slenderman.

also it might just be me - but the broken hourglass sort of makes me think time is going to be broken or running out...
