Ooooh dear. I suspect they've been forced to work with some constraints - maybe they don't want to give Slendy a real suit because it'd get messed up in the snow, maybe (if that's an actual person rather than a scarecrow) their Slender actor wanted to wear more warm clothes than just a business suit, but still. No. If you can't get an actual person in a real suit outside in the thick snow to appear in your Slendy video then shoot it the hell inside or don't show Slendy at all.,

QFT. :/ But I did like the Time-Fu.

I saw the screen shot of their Slender Man and that is the worst Slender Man I ever saw.

Anyone else take note in how the distortion was different? For some reason, in this series, whenever the camera would catch a glimpse of (what we thought) was Slenderman, instead of the normal visual tears and such, we would get this weird red and green stuff (which I doubt was a happy holidays message). Now it's black and white, somewhat more in line with the originals. Are we possibly dealing with two separate entities?

It's a lot more likely that they read our complaints and changed their style.
Personally, I never had a problem with a green-red, only because it was fresh compared to other series. But, admittedly, it's just not as creepy as standard distortion. No one will do it better than MH, their varied intensities of distortion make all the difference. With other series it's mostly normal, normal, OMGSTATICEARRAPE, normal, normal, BLEEEEEEEEEEEEE, normal, etc.

I've seen some of the other up-and-comers use some pretty creative distortions. But that's part of the problem, really. Anything that we're not used to, we deride, and anything we are used to, we call copying.

I'm not talking about anyone specific, but it does seem to be symptomatic of a forum-wide trend to pressure newer side-stories to be as similar to Marble Hornets and everymanHYBRID as possible, without actually reusing any plot or technique. And that seems impossible to me, especially when we tend to take it for granted that added traits of Mr. Thin in new videos become part of the mythos in general.

Sure, I have my limits, too. There are certain points where I just think that the poor bastard just shouldn't have picked up a camera in the first place (and from what I've seen of Dark Harvest thus far, it hasn't reached that point yet; a better example of this would be Apple of Our Eye), but in any case, I think we should be looking at these like they're the creative works of someone who wouldn't pick up a camera at all if they didn't care at least a little bit about entertaining someone.

And hell, if we were to do that, we might avoid creating another jonclubs. Sure, he flipped shit because of something unreasonable, but he only really flipped shit after, what, two or three months of constant derision. And that story had a lot of good elements. But we focused on the negative ones, and as such, we bear some of the responsibility of that drama and bullshit. We helped create it.

Sorry for the long-winded post, but...the Slenderman stories give me something to do with my boring life, and bring a little bit of excitement. I currently plan on working on shooting my own vlog when I pick up a camera (which brings up some difficulties, but that's for another thread), and so I watch everything I can, hoping to learn whatever I can learn. (Lesson #1, learned from Marble Hornets: shoot all the footage that you can as soon as you can, and edit it all, and do it all before a single video is released. This helps to keep week- and month-long delays to a minimum.)

But if I were in the position of some of these guys, I wouldn't want to bother making a story at all. There's no point in it if every single point of comparison is going to be lambasted until the cows come home.

Oh, yikes. This entry might have just been a deal-breaker for me. Between the truly terrible Slenderman and the MH ripoff... ugh. Not good.

Bravo Dark Harvest. You've turned potential gold to dung with a single entry. That was the worst Slender Man I have ever seen in my life.

How about next time you reach into your pocket and pull out the bucks to make a better one Razz . Seriously, just because they don't have the cash and or aren't willingly to create a better one doesn't mean you get to throw up in their faces all about it.

Would anyone be mad if they took the video down and edited that single part out of it? I wouldn't, cause so far, it's their only real fault in the series.

Oooh, good question Chukwa.

On the one hand, my gut instinct is to say that they should roll with what they've released. If you let yourself get too revisionistic about your work you... well, you end up becoming George Lucas. And they could always find someway to work its fakey-ness into the plot. (Maybe it's a friend who heard about their difficulties and decided to prank them... only to attract the attention of the real Slendy? Too EMH? Maybe, but at least it'd have the added spin that the main characters aren't aware of the joke...)

On the other hand, eh, it's not like if they reupload we'll have to go out and buy a completely new set of Dark Harvest DVDs to get the digitally remastered episode or something. And there's no better way to endear yourself to an audience than make a big show of how much you're listening to their feedback.

Yay!

Ahem. I was sort of thinking maybe it would add to a mindscrew factor if they took down the video and re uploaded it but with that one part added out, or maybe the exact same footage but with maybe a better Slenderman, or maybe their hooded friend who is still a mystery. Because that's who I'm still concerned about, unless that's Slendy in his informal attire. Which would explain why he's so short and stout in the latest video! Sorta [/sub]

It could also be that that slendy isn't even slendy and some kids dressed up a snowman into a suit, for all we know. Actual slendy might show up later

When they start using the ideas that we create its less of their video and more of 'our' videos. Let the girl stumble down the rabbit hole as they say. Let them do what they want.

It doesn't take a lot of cash to find a guy and dress him in a cheap suit. It really doesn't. And if you are going to commit to something like this, you really should have the equipment to make it look half decent. You can't just pick up a random camera and film willy dilly and then expect it to magically be praised as awesome and as immune to criticism.
