Oh, perhaps someone here can answer this.

Is this supposed to be Clu?

Or was it a character that was cut from the final draft of the movie? I think I saw a poster with him in it, which made me think "Virus" and so forth.

From Tron: Evolution (haven't finished yet, but I'm sure there are story synopses out there), that's Abraxas. The idea seems to be that he's some virus that evolved from an ISO. At the beginning of the game, you chase him off, shattering his disc. After a particular foot-in-mouth incident from Flynn, Clu sees a fragment of the disc and picks it up. Next time Clu is seen, he's yellow/orange. So I've always thought that he used the ISO/virus technology to purge the ISOs from the system. But without more background, it's not entirely clear.

Does anyone have the dialouge from Clu's speech in the Rectifier? I've been trying to find it online with no avail...

here ya go...

greetings programs!

together we have achieved a great many things;
we've created a vast complex system;
we've maintained it;

... improved it, we have rid it of it's imperfection, not to mention rid it of the false deity who sought to enslave us..

kevin flynn! where are you now?
my fellow programs let there be no doubt,
that our worlds is a cage no more;
for at this moment, the key to next frontier is finally in our possession! <points>
and unlike our selfish creator who has reserved the privilege of our world only for himself,
i will make their world open and available to all of us!

yees!

TO ALL OF US!

and what ever we find there,
there our system will grow;
there our system will blossom;
do this prove yourselves to me; be loyal to me, and i will never betray you.

... maximize efficeincy... rid the new system of it's imperfection

it is clear our fellow programs,
out there is a new world,
out there is our victory!
out there is our destiny...<plasticy>

Gabe & Tyco (from Penny-Arcade & Childs Play) have an opinion on the movie, and as much as I loved the movie I agree 100%.

I love them, and they're interesting questions, but here's the thing:

1) This is Flynn's private server. Consider it his playground. He was working out all kinds of stuff in there. If any of you have ever written your own code for your own purposes...it's like fiction that you're writing for practice. If you want your hero to die in one chapter and be back the next, you can do it, because it's *your* work. So, if Flynn decided to play around with transmitting energy using greenbean.exe, he could. That's the convenient thing about this being a Galapagos Island server...it's really whatever he felt like doing, and it doesn't *need* to make sense to us. And much of it may be stuck that way...he didn't anticipate one of his own programs trapping him in there. Sure, as a programmer, he really should have, but when you're excited, well, maybe you don't always use best practices. Ask any programmer who's forgotten to bounds check an array.

2) The movie is already 2 hours long. Do we really need tangents explaining how digital food works, why someone would be carrying an umbrella, how the solar sailer network is laid out, where clothes are stored, what purpose a club could serve, etc? I mean, sure some of them could have plausible explanations, but why take the time away from an already long movie to explain it? Especially because these are the guys who invented the fruit f*@(&er. If they had their own personal god server, they'd be riding around on dinosaurs with ninja minions who danced to MC Hammer when they clapped their hands.

While I am a fan of the original, and I recognize every movie has issues, many of these questions just don't make sense to me. I've been seeing them in TONS of reviews. It's almost like this movie makes people feel dumb, and they have to rail against it.

I had a major nitpick with the whole "escape from the game grid" part- seriously, I know that light cycles might not work in the rough outlands of the world, but not Recognizers? Or the lightjets? You would have expected that with the ease that CLU eventually gets to Kevin's hidey-hole, they could have had them followed. IE- one of the easiest things to do would have been to add a tracking virus to the identity disc of all programs suited up at the game grid.

Otherwise, aside that minor nitpick, and the last 3 minutes of the movie, I thought it was great. Can't wait to see it again.

Well, if your recollection allows... and you've got a bit of time... Could you do that for Flynn's speech, from early in the film, too?

CLU can't code.

No codey, no virusey.

Once again this comes down to the idea that this world is a humanized projection of the digital realm. Rather than asking "why does a program have an umbrella?" I'd be more inclined to ask "what's the function of the 'umbrella add-on' with that program?"

I saw the vehicles designed for the city as a functioning part of the city - that is, they belong there, get their power and ability from there. If they go too far from there, they effectively die, like a subroutine executed outside its parent application. Secondly, Programs aren't ships, and ISOs and Flynn would in theory be able to create and/or use 'off-site' functions and routines. ISOs originated out of the primary system for one and clearly have an added ability to adjust and create within the system (as we saw with their buildings), and Flynn's the programmer.

I think a more appropriate question would be why would the light cycles stop working off the grid (out of the city?) and yet the light jets could travel to the portal? I think the data transit line is considered part of the primary system, in which case the native jets (Clu & co's) would work, and in theory light cycles would as well were someone to ride one all the way to the portal.
That's the way I see it and it makes sense to me Smile

It's been too long since I watched the original Tron, but weren't there rocky areas before that they rode their light cycles on when going to the final battle?

I thought the point was that CLU can't WRITE code, but he can MODIFY code. If he has the ability to control either through rewrites or some wireless control the bad orangies, he should be able to also add a "jack" to any code that gets added.

At the end, when Tron was sinking and reverting back to blue, was I the only one that was looking for any indication that he was moving? I caught myself murmuring "get up... get up... move..." and was hoping he'd show up there at the end. Ah well, sequel.

I can't wait to get my copy of the Art of Tron- the artistic team did a bang-up job on the vehicles, city, and games.
