[META]Now, I'm feeling queezy. Is this real or not?

Aaah, boy. My stomach is sinking with sudden doubt as to who is behind this game. Two new sites have been found which has "Beth's" picture on it. However, these sites do not have the USH logo on them.

Which leads me to two possibilities:

1.) These are ameteurs. They just copied pictures of people they found on other websites and used them as characters for this game.

2.) These site are part of the game. We have been going on the assumption that USH logo will be on everything. However, this logo isn't on the Metacortex page is it? Sure Underscore is linked, and you can click on the words in the news page that announces USH as a partner company, but there are no logos, right, right?

Or is this latter possibility... just wishful thinking?

BTW here are the sites with "Beth" if that is her real f*cking name:

here
oh and here

Oh, well....

Dude, they are royalty free images. Odds are, the PM's picked them up out of an image repository somewhere. Of course other web developers have used the same image. Free is much better than paying a professional photographer and a model just so you can have a picture. This is a game designed by amateurs, not a design house with a six-figure budget. The sooner you come to grasps with that, the sooner you can just settle down and enjoy the game.

First of all "dude"?

Second of all, that's my point, dude. If they're just free images that probably means that these are ameteur PMs. If it were the Wachowskis they would have photographed someone themselves who volunteered to submit their photograph as a character for this game. But if this is just some free photograph, that means these are ameteur PMs, who while their game looks very impressive, simply got all their stuff the same way every ameteur PM gets theirs for their ARG.

It's like seeing someone with a really cool pen, and they tell you it was custom made, and you go to Office Max and see the very same pen.

THESE ARE AMETEUR PMS!

However I wasn't really looking for someone to just automatically agree with me. Because I still think it's possible the WB is involved. What does everyone else think.

I've seen non-amateurs do the same exact thing. There was just an article (in Slate? I think? I don't remember.) about how car dealerships are using the same stock photos of actors in their car ads, sometimes even in the same paper. So you could see a picture of Joe T. Model in a Mitsubishi ad telling us how much he loves his new Mitsubishi and then turn the page to see the same Joe T. Model doing the same for Toyota. It's fine with me as long as it makes my car cheaper!

***EDIT***
I just asked my husband, who works for a company that does one of the major NFL team's official site, among others and he said that they use stock photos all the time and they do have big budgets. So I guess it's still possible that the WB are behind this.

Or, oooor, maybe this is proof that despite Tarantino's colorful accusations, the Wachowski brothers are not money-driven. They just want to have fun.

I like that theory!

There was an article about this sort of thing (overused stock photos) on slashdot recently.

I don't think it really matters too much who is behind the game.

When Marcus Ormond is playing Poker with his friend's, I don't think he sits there and goes.. "oh, who created this game" ( unless he's lost a lot of $$'s and is seeking revenge ).

There are many, many, many (and again, many ) matrix "themed" thing's that haven't anything to do with WB.

In this arg, we haven't seen 'much' at all to do wth thie matrix.. apart from a similar named company ( not spelt the same ).. and a person named Thomas Anderson who was transferred. Apart from that, there isn't really anything matrix specific.

If it is WB commissioned, they have done it so that they have hidden themselves from it. If not, it's still fun working out puzzles etc. If your playing the game tho just because yu think WB has done it, and are such a great fan of WB's.. I'd say go out and buy every WB"s thing on earth, because you might be let down at the end if they haven't anything to do with it.

Dude... Did you even watch the movie? In the movie Metacortex was also spelt Metacortechs. It's been like one of the longest running jokes about the Matrix. "Is it a film flub or did the Bros. mean to do it?" In this ARG it is spelled the same. Both ways same as the movie.

To say this has nothing to do with the Matrix is going a little too far.

If anything this is a fan ARG. An UNofficial Matrix spinoff. Those are allowed. My biggest fear is that if this is a fan ARG it'll lead to something horribly stupid like one of the PMs mooning us, or a gay porn site.

Honestly I won't mind if I find out it is a fan ARG just as long as the ending is good. I don't like going to movies that have horrible endings that ruin the whole experience for me. It's the same thing here, but on a bigger scale. That's my beef.

Well anyway the 2 above site aren't related. Actually you can buy from them and they give free .com .net etc.. domain. Plus, it's powered by sprint... it's a phone company.

I don't think it will end in a mooning =P

I'm just thinking that compared to other matrix things.. other matrix things were definitely matrix based and not shy about it (ie storyline based ).

Just looking at the 'plot' and storyline of the arg so far, it doesnt seem to fit into the matrix storyline just yet.
I'll wait until I see any reference to Zion or Sentinals or 'unplugging' etc..
If it is definitely officially matrix based. I would like to see how the storyline so far does fit into the matrix storyline.

I think maybe the PM"s have used the matrix theme.. but it's obscure.
They have gone to a lot of trouble tho, way too much to do a 'mooning' at the end of it.

Maybe its the storyline of whats happening in the "matrix" in another persons eyes.

There are a lot of maybe's tho.

I guess we all really can't say until it's been completed.

So far tho, the prize in this game has been working out the answers before other people ( or contributing ) and getting major props =)
Even if there is a mooning ( Im 100% sure there wont be ).. the props enough is worth it. ( Although I haven't got any yet.. hehe.. but been stinging to get answers first ) and I love how people are working together to get through it, because if there was no team work.. nothing would be solved.

this is getting wayyyy off topic..
Another truth tho, is if I had spent as much time on this, as effort into doing a backflip. I would've been able to do a backflip now. =P Instead of working out clues.. I could've been neo-styling it in real life =P
btw.. just to add.. you know how neo gets taught all of those things in seconds by a program. We can also learn those things by setting goals and patterns and spending time on it. You just draw a line, the start is where you are now, the end is a goal, such as mastering a martial art.. then you just put your heart into it and focus all of your mind, body, soul, and love.. and go at it hard and with a lot of discipline.. each blockage in the line.. you work out another way to get past it.. until you reach your goal.. once you have.. you then do another goal.. maybe mastering another art ( there is quite a few out there hehe ).. and then your neo-styling.. then you set harder goals.. extremely hard hard hard goals.. maybe deep meditation that takes you into a dream like state where you are in a dream (after many many years.. but time doesnt exist in a dream, only the perception of it ;P ).. maybe running further and faster than you ever could before.. growth, we are all still growing.. just like neo does in the movie.
* strays back on topic * then it don't matter who created what (ie WB or matrix fans ), only what you can learn from it while your on your journey.

/me thinks I've been watching too many martial arts movies on the world channel.

I think there has been an absence of hard matrix references in the game so far because everyone in the game (chances are) is still plugged in. No Smith, no Zion, no dodging bullets and talk of pursuit... everyone in play is still plugged in (spec, BTW)...

It's one possible explanation, anyway. Another is the "it's unofficial and no-one wants to get sued"... Wink

I must apologize to the mods for starting up a thread that really should be with my "Metacortechs Arg" thread. So everyone if you want to continue this discussion at the other thread. Where this should have been.

Go here to see my response.

If this is unrelated to "the official Matrix" then so are certain shorts from the Animatrix (the "buggy" house comes to mind). Just because every single site doesn't have a million intricate references to Neo/Trinity/Morpheus/Smith et. al. doesn't mean it's not quote-unquote canon.

I don't understand the hardcore insistence that this be officially sanctioned and/or sponsored by the WB. I have a strong feeling it is, by the way, but I don't think it matters either. It's a game --- if it's official, then super cool, the WB are nifty, that's great. If it's a fan, I'd be even more impressed: the amount of work that we have seen so far (more than a dozen websites, phone numbers, voicemail, different voices on the voicemails, emails, composite images, ftps, mp3s, etc.) makes this a Herculean effort for a well funded organization, and I'd imagine it would be much more so for a simple fan with lots of love.

Whoever is running this (and I hope you're reading): you have, at the very least, my respect, be you a simple fan or the originators of the entire mythos.

I emailed hostt.net the other day asking where they got the "Beth" picture, here is the response:

"This picture was downloaded from a authroized membership template download site, where we paid yearly membership to download their authorized templates. It is from www.boxedart.com if you have a membership there, you can download one of the sites includes that picture. If you have any more questions, kindly let us know.

Sincerely

I'd be willing to bet this is the same place they found all those pictures of sheet music on the Wongmo site.
