There is no good editing software that doesn't cost money. You either have to pay, pirate, or settle for crap.

Your best option on a low budget would be the consumer edition of Sony Vegas, in my opinion. It's not too expensive and is probably one of the easier ones to pick up and use (while still being fairly powerful). I'm 99% sure that MH is made with Sony Vegas, as well. It does only work on Windows, though.

If you're not intimidated by price, I guess you could jump right into professional stuff like Adobe (for Windows) or Final Cut (for Mac). But those programs have more of a difficulty curve and don't offer much that you'd need for a Slender Man series.

Windows Live Movie Maker is a free download that is fast and easy to do straight up editing with, but you'll have little to no control over "effects" other than titles and transitions.

Most of the big softwares have free trials so check them out.

FWIW, I find that Sony Vegas has the lowest learning curve and provides the most bang for your buck.

If you want good video effects go with Sony Vegas (Most reasonable price) or Adobe After Effects (if you can afford it, it's $1000). As for audio alone, Audacity is free and is pretty useful if you know what you're doing, but I wouldn't know about any other products. Good luck with your editing!

Audacity is totally useless for anything other than the most basic of audio editing, really. You wouldn't get much out of it.

I have a sound guy that mixes audio for me, and he uses an outdated version of Cubase. If you need a proper sound editor, that one seems to work on a budget.

Sony Vegas actually has decent audio editing capabilities built-in, though, if you go with that one. Most of the audio distortion people use can be duplicated exactly with the default options. (For example, the iconic hissing sound in MH from Entry #20 and #30 is just bad amplitude modulation.) More options can be downloaded for free online or bought for low enough prices that it wouldn't matter much.

Obviously I would prefer you to sell your story on the quality of its cinematography and atmosphere rather than generic distortion-o-rama like everyone else. But these are options if you want to go for that.
