[OT] Original Tron on DVD
What the hell happened?

I don't need Tron on DVD I have the 20th Anniversary. I have had three copies of the 20th Anniversary (lent it out twice and never got it back), and two on the white case, (lent it out and never got it back).

But I look on ebay and see that the copies are going for $50-$150.

6 months ago people couldn't have cared less about it. And supposedly Disney is ashamed of this movie. I saw a ridiculous amount of copies of TRON in white and black cases going for 9.99 and sometimes it was even in the bargain bin.

So if they wanted to make DOUBLE their money back on the new film, they would just re-release the original.

But there are literally a crazy amount of copies on ebay right now and the price is still going for stupid amounts.

Disney will probably take at least 4-6 months or maybe a year for this (Tron Legacy) to come out on DVD, because they can.

I just think this is stupid.

Partially it is because the movie came out and now everyone wants to be a fan. Even copies of Tron 2.0 are selling for about $10.00 when they use to sell for $3.00 before the promotions went full scale.

The other reason is, you can't buy it anywhere except from a 3rd party. Right now it's between it's major anniversaries, so they haven't pressed new discs. They have a general policy of only releasing movies for X period of time and then releasing a new edition every 10 years or so. They will probably jump the gun a little and do a combo pack now or wait until all the movies are out (if they do make all 3) and release it as a 4 pack.

While that price is high, I remember seeing VHS copies of Beauty and the Beast sell for over $100 until they released the dvd version.

That and the rumor that Disney is supressing the first movie because they don't want to scare away potential new fans with the dated visuals and plot, but probably more the previous stuff than this.

The 'dated' look of the original shouldn't hurt its reputation - it fits the time it was made. That was top shelf back then, and in fact it took years after that for video games to actually look as textured - most stuff back then was STILL 8 bit pixel art. What the original does need is a cleanup and color correction, which is apparently what they were trying to do when preparing the BD master they were thinking of releasing. As I recall, that's what was basically seen in the HD version shown a little while back. I still think they may go ahead and release a BD of the original Tron, and actually skip pressing any more DVDs of it until at least the release of Tron Legacy to disc.

There's only one film Disney is 'too ashamed' to re-release ever - Song of the South.

Well that is what I think is stupid. If people have not seen the original, they will think that Kevin Flynn is acting too much like "The Dude"

when in fact that was kind of his original character. I think it has EVERYTHING to do with the new film. At the very least make a big deal and play the original on the Disney channel and let EVERYONE know about it.

I'm awaiting the Blu-Ray version. I had to download the original Tron off piratebay as there are no copies anywhere to be found.

I go to the used DVD place every other week, it's an addiction.

I have seen countless copies in the past 6 months and WAY before that.

I went up there tonight to get the A-Team (Third Best film of 2010 1.Tron Legacy 2. Harry Potter 3. A TEAM!!!) and just asked how many people have been looking for Tron, and the lady laughed at me.

I said I ain't looking for it I am just curious as to how hard it is to find right now, and she said impossible.

Even then, they still release pieces of it.

Tron, the black hole, the black cauldron, etc. were all part of the group of discs they put out with very little zero promotion. Heck, they did a bluray release of the black cauldron just a few months ago and not only was it not promoted like every other disney cartoon release but it was not even promoted in store fliers for new releases.

As for dated look and the crazy tinfoil hat rumor, I wouldn't say it would hurt people who saw it before it came about or hardcore fans, but if you were trying to get casual people to jump on board (which is where the money is at) then you would want to stack the deck in your favor as much as possible.

The franchise was more or less dead until 2003 with a game that doesn't count as part of the canon anymore, then in 2006 with Kingdom Hearts 2.
Both of those were considered more hardcore fan service rather than trying to gets people interested since they also didn't have the US market appeal of games like Madden or Halo.

If anyone really wanted to get a copy the best place to probably go would be a blockbuster closing sale since they would only sell it at a cheap price rather than ebay prices.

This literally HAS to be a problem within the past two months. I wish I still had my white case copy. But I still get to watch it whenever I want.

I won't even call the people trying to buy them "fairweather fans" they are wanting to brush up before the movie comes out with it 100% understandable.

So why the hell would Disney NOT do something for this. The next Anniversary is 2012 which will be the 30th anniversary, I think a lot of people will be turned off by this. But most people that would REALLY be into will have already had a copy.

I think you might have answered your own questions right there.

The prices of retro/any Tron stuff has skyrocketed because resellers want to capitalize on the fairweather fan. It's just like Ebay in december, prices for many things go up because they know people will spend the money.

As for why they didn't release the disc now, with the 30 year anniversary so close they would then end up having a back to back release. Why only take $15-18 for a plain DVD when you can get $25 for a "Special Anniversary Edition" dvd (or 30 for blu ray) that comes with special features you will honestly watch/listen to/use a few times at most.

Most retailers can't capitalize that greatly on the customers. The place I go to is called "Movie Trading Company" and there are many here in the Midwest.

San Francisco had Rasputin and Amoeba, and all of them could be charged with Price Gouging if they just hike the price up like that.

I asked the girl how much they were selling them for and she said they were still selling them at 14.99.

Which is understandable.

I guess that OOP tag always add's more.

In 2005 I went to Wal Mart and bought a DVD of Muppets and John Denver Rocky Mountain Getaway or something like that. It was 7.99, and now the ebay were at $200 for a while, now they are calm at $50.

Weird stuff.

Retailers won't pull that because they don't usually get full price control. I'm not sure if Suncoast was individual franchises or what but that was the place that had the B&B VHS for $100.

I view them kind of like comic/collector stores where they rely on finite supplies to jack up the prices for hardcore collectors/fans of a specific studio or actor.

That muppets DVD will probably spike again since there is a muppets moving coming out next year I think.

I'm still wating for a Cool World dvd re release, but I have a feeling that hell will freeze over before that.

Amen to that, I wanted to watch it myself and I really tried going the legal route (checked netflix, isn't available, local video stores, amazon, ebay.. the later were too expensive or bidding wars).

I'll buy one probably when tron legacy comes out on dvd/blue ray.

Shoot, maybe they'll even have them both in a set.

This is already happening among the Tron Hating Critics out there. They all are relating the performance to "the Dude". Seriously? Come on! If they had ACTUALLY watched the original, they see the resemblance.

My wife couldn't believe me when I told her that 2-disc DVD set was going for $200. I think I got it from Amazon for $15 when it came out. I loved it, and was happy to see all the extras on the second DVD. I still have the original VHS clamshell too.

Anyone who has seen Jeff Bridges should know that "The Dude" is in everything he does. How many times does he says "Man" at the end of sentences in Tron? 20?

I'd never sell my double-disc case Tron DVD, mostly because I love the movie so much, but also it's a very nice holder for all the postcards and notes from Zack from the ARG Smile

I wonder how much my old Dark Crystal stuff will go for once the sequel for THAT comes out...
