Wait, where did that camera come from? So, I've been rewatching MH with a friend recently, and I realized something. In Entry 26 the part from Alex, his girlfriend obviously found a video camera, which contained footage related to the ARG, and then she taped over it to record the footage that Alex sent Jay. Now, Alex was obviously paranoid after his encounters with Slenderman. That's why he gave the tapes to Jay and told him to burn them. That's why he ran away. So it wouldn't make any sense for him to keep the camera that he presumably recorded all the tapes on. Logically, he would have sold it, or destroyed it. So why did Amy find it in their apartment?

The most popular theory is that it was planted, possibly by Masky, in order to draw Slender Man back onto Alex's trail. Why? Well, that's something only the person who would've done it knows.

Alex being recorded and thus summoning Slendy doesn't even make sense to begin with. He's been recorded by hundreds of cameras incidentally since dumping the MH tapes on J.
And since Slendy has been seen through many different cameras I think we can rule this one a red herring.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there's no proof that he's actually used a video camera since MH. It sounds far-fetched that he wouldn't use camera's for 2/3 years but if I was stalked by a creepy guy with no face who seems to have a connection to cameras, well yeah I wouldn't touch another camera.
And besides Amy's reaction, "I thought we didn't have a camera?" sums up what I said in just one sentence.

He didn't use a camera in 26 either.

But Amy did, and she caught Alex on film.

No, you know what, this is legit and I never thought of it before. Can a person really go years without ever even once being caught on video? We've got security cameras every-freaking-where nowadays, not even to mention random people on streets with cameraphones these days.
I still think having Alex caught on film did summon the Operator, considering how immediately he showed up after Amy started filming the boy. However, it makes me wonder if there really is something about THAT particular camera.

I think that it's a combination of that camera and that tape that was being taped over. It's not that if, say, Alex was caught on the Quickymart security camera, the Operator'd pop out of nowhere... it's just that the tape/camera combo, when focused and filming Alex, were enough to sound the veritable dog-whistle.

Oh I thought your point was that ALEX hadn't used one.
E: I do buy the tape being the catalyst, but it seems odd for Alex to be sloppy enough to leave one behind.

Hence the chatter that the camera and the tape were a plant!

I think that's the most likely scenario, but why? As in, what was the point of doing that.

Perhaps to light a fire under Jay's ass, or even under Alex's. Maybe to make Alex reach out to Jay -- the only other person he knows for sure knows about Slenderman. Maybe just to get some footage of Alex to wave under Jay's nose.
Actually, I'm not personally convinced it was a plant. Having an old camera around as a memento of worse days past seems like exactly the kind of stupid thing that is entirely within the realm of possibility. I just don't think Alex was surprised enough to see the camera for it to have been a plant -- he seemed alarmed, maybe irritated, but unsurprised.

Hmmm. Interesting, maybe there was some footage of Slenderman that Amy taped over while filming Alex and that's what summoned him.
The point of planting the camera and tape? To draw Jay back into the mystery. At that point Jay lost his home, loosing tracks of time, getting sick, and being attacked, he was ready to wash his hands of the whole thing. TTA needed to do something to draw Jay back into the fray.

Certainly Alex has been caught on tape. However, perhaps Slender man/the Operator just didn't know just which cameras to look through.
