If you want even the slightest enjoyment out of the series, watch 2 first. Everything you need to know about the first one can literally be summed up in once sentance. If you don't want to waste two hours of your life, don't watch them at all.

Spoiler for PA1:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The girl's been followe by the demon since she was a kid, and she gets possessed at the end and kills her boyfriend and disappears. One sentance.

Right! But here's the thing - what have we see O Town actually do in the series except cause sickness and stand in the distance menacingly? What makes the Operator scary is the sense that he is watching, accompanied by a lack of motive. The Operator itself isn't scary - the sensation of being watched and followed everywhere, however, is. This sensation also extends to the various Masked nutjobs in the series as well, and humans are definitely real.

Demonic possession, however, is not scary at all if you don't believe. You won't walk around and constantly glance over your shoulder if you start thinking about a girl in a movie being possessed by demons. You WILL start glancing over your shoulder if you think about Jay's need to constantly film himself and watch his back for the various things watching and following him. I think every MH viewer went through this when they first started, whereas PA left no lasting impact on my behavior.

Seriously though, I can remember when I started watching Marble Hornets, it freaked me out like no other. But now I'm watching those same entries and I'm like, "I was scared pantsless..by that!?"

I use to think the same thing, but really, when first starting getting into MH, you have no idea what the hell your getting into.

The reason the "Nothing Is Scarier" trope works is that our subconscious mind starts going into paranoia mode and fills in blanks our conscious mind doesn't even knows exist. It's a natural response to create worst-case scenarios when not given enough information.

Edit: GRAMMAR HOW DO IT WORKS

Am I the only person here who loves the first PA because of the pitch-perfect way it handled the disintegrating relationship between the two protagonists?

Given that the conversation has now been about Paranormal Activity for several pages now, would you guys mind taking it to the Off Topic thread?
