Well, everybody looks at cursing and the messages it conveys a different way. Call me over sensetive or a baby or whatever you like, but I'm going to come out and say it: overly frequent cursing bugs me. Saying "hell" or "damn" or whatever every so often doesn't so much as turn my head, but Noah goes so overboard with the frequency of his language that it goes from exaggerated to just annoying. Looking at this from less of an IG perspective to more of just being a member of the audience, he makes it seem like he relies on it, and that's just irksome to me personally, if not anything else.

It may fit into Noah's character, and yeah, I'm sure that it could be considered reasonable given his circumstances, but heck, I'm a person who doesn't want to hear the goshdarn "'F' Bomb" every other word in a sentence. It's just a matter of storytelling quality, and it feels butchered if you can't focus on what's actually going on because you're more concentrating on how unnerving it is that Noah's vocabulary is entirely comprised of swear words. Or at least that's just me. I'm sure there are a lot of other people that don't give a shizz and that's fine with me, but the fact of the matter is, I stopped watching Tribe Twelve because the cursing eventually got to me. Not saying it CAN'T be used to make everything sound realistic, but there are times when you just need to cool it.

Jay has got incredably mind-farging problems of his own, but he gets by without laying down at least two swear words on a bi-sentence basis. Cursing is common, and when you're being stalked by crazy sharp-teethed, one-eye'd, obsessed-with-filter-effects psychopaths, I'm sure you might not be focusing on your morals where language is concerned. But it's simply that I don't like cursing, other people don't like cursing, and then there are the rest that either DO like it or don't care at all. I am a member of the former, and that's just how I feel.

What people consider curse words do vary. Out of context, to me, hell is a curse word. Not because my mother raised me that way, it's just something that I have constituted on my own accord.

What I find as "Curse" or "Swear" or "Foul language"

- F#&k or any variation (Censored for any baby ears in the forum)
- Sh*t (Same thing)
- The C-Bomb (Ditto)

And I think that's all for me. I guess I was just never taught that anything else was as bad as those

To say that Marble Hornets is less realistic because Jay doesn't curse is untrue. Everyone reacts to feelings of fear and danger in different ways. Jay keeps quiet in those situations for the most part, and that's a pretty realistic reaction for Jay given what else we've seen about his character (the very few times I've found myself in really dangerous situations, I've always reacted to them silently, waiting to see how they play out before I respond). More I think about Noah's cursing in Tribe Twelve, the more I start to think it's not so much unrealistic as it is just really obnoxious (to me). Still, far as I'm concerned cursing or lackthereof has nothing to do with how good a peice of dialogue is.

Out of game, they keep the cussing to a minimum because they're posting it on youtube and they want to make sure the videos don't get taken down.

Huh. If YouTube keeps Tourette's Guy up, it would take a LOT for Marble Hornets to get knocked down.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Apparently I'm joining in an actual discussion about swearing on the Internet now too. Sad

I can't believe my little aside about "lol jay cursed" has devolved into an argument regarding the realism of swearing when being pursued by an eldritch abomination.

I LOVE UNFORUM. Very Happy

On the topic of cursing, I think that EMH gets it completely right.
I think those characters are loads more believable than TT and MH combined, though that's just me.

As for Jay's lack of outbursts, I just think that it's his personality to not get crazy pissed. I'm the same way (I'll be more passive aggressive than anything if something really bad happens... I'll probably just steal somebody's keys or something).

On the other hand, Noah is a mixed bag of acting. I like what Adam's done with TribeTwelve, but it's just never solid to me. The acting in the beginning of the series was laughably abysmal, but it improved tons as the series went on... In this latest video, I've found myself laughing again. The cursing isn't a big deal for me, but he does sometimes overdo it. I used to curse a ridiculous amount, and I don't think I've come close to Noah's track record.

...And to not ride the de-railed thread down the hill, I'm glad that Jay finally stopped eating a bowl of stupid for breakfast every morning. I was mildly frustrated through parts of 58 when he kept sticking to the whole movie deal, even when Tim called him out on how bad the movie is/was.

I don't know what YouTube's censorship policy is, but if they take videos down because of excessive cursing, I can't believe Tribe Twelve or a million other videos are still existent. In any event, Troysoephim said they have a strict 'No Swearing Rule' because they don't want it to end up sounding like they were dependant on it to make their actions sound realistic.

As for EverymanHYBRID, I appreciate the scarcity of their foul language too, but hearing them use the 'F' word whenever they do makes me cringe. It's probably because I take it a lot more seriously than I ever took TribeTwelve and hearing it anchors down deeper than when I just feel annoyed with Noah for talking like a sailor. I watched the two latest videos because of the hype they were getting, and although I don't really remember what occured in the November 21st video, Noah flipping off the handle about Mary or whatever her name was legit bothered me because of the language he chose to convey it. It goes from obnoxious to more obnoxious to just genuinely unnerving.

I guess I could conclude my own argument by saying that I think Marble Hornets has the right idea with keeping their cursing at a minimum. The bottom line is, it's just not needed and any amount of terror and/or emotion can be conveyed just as effectively with silence. When in doubt, better without.

Me thinks Jay's lying gag will be coming to an end shortly.

I personally think Noah's swearing is a good anchor for the rest of the series which really puts the abomination in eldritch abomination.

The amount of swearing doesn't really bother me and I don't notice it either way.

This this this.

I think his cursing is excessive and rather silly at times, and I understand that's how some people handle stress and that Noah was frustrated as all get out and incredibly angry with Mary, but once he started on with that "Fucking bitch!" rant, coupled with his violent tantrum, I was incredibly unsettled.

Less is more is the phrase of the day here, which is kinda funny considering Marble Hornets is a minimalist series to the extreme.

hahahaha i think its funny but awesome that there are actually other people on the internet who aren't big fans of swearing. I thought I was the only one, but I think also a while back someone posted that he/she was a mormon, and I am too... which by the way, we do kind of set ourselves pretty high standards with our language.

But yes, I don't like a lot of swearing anywhere. I'm glad marble hornets doesn't use it too much, and when they do, it's just an occasional "hell" (or damn) which really doesn't offend many people compared to other words. It's another reason to give my parents why they shouldn't hate marble hornets as much as they do, haha

Jay said "piss", Tim and Alex said "hell", and someone "crap" in an early entry. The little swearing makes me laugh since Troy and co swear like sailors in real life.

That barely qualifies as cursing, in my book anyways. I guess it call comes down to everyone's different definition of what words are curses. :\
