I'm confused. I thought Jay said he had to get back (wherever back is) Fast. But he's just leaving now like 24 hours later? Did he like tweet and then sit at the tower thinking for a whole day, or am I missing something? =P

Jay's allowed to change his mind and do something additional without notifying us (which he was kind enough to do anyway afterwards). Not like we're his boss.

I'm thinking That jay actually did leave the area of the tower yesterday and when he said he's heading out now he's referring to the rest area he tweeted from.
He most likely checked out the tower yesterday before leaving.
