[FILM] Reviews (spoilers)
Just a place to talk about the film post screening

Hi friends:

I am intending this to be spoiler free....everything that I am discussing here would have been accessible to people who participated in the ARG.

I saw the film yesterday at Disney's screening room in NY. The screen in there is small and I plan to watch it in IMAX 3D on Friday with my son.

That complaint aside the film is magical. It is something that I hope all of you will treasure.

I said this coming out of the screening - visually unbelievable, aurally amazing, story is a bit thin, but it is thicker than Pocohantas...I mean Avatar. The themes are really really strong and I've been afterglowing on those for 24 hours at this point. I think it was the strong themes from the original Tron that I dug so much. The plot of the original film is basically a romp, but those themes of rebellion, redemption, and the primacy of the individual (or user), have brought me back to it year after year.

Those of you who are older fans (like me - I saw it when I was 6 with my grandma), there are lots of nods to the original - but they are all subtle and Kosinski doesn't smack you over those nods to the past.

For those of you at Tron Night, many of the big surprises were revealed to us (like the way a program Derezzes, etc.) but the biggest surprises are left for the final act. The final act is absolutely incredible with battles that sucked me in as much as anything I have seen in 25 years.

I'm a fanboy and was genetically coded to like this film. It never could have lived up to my high expectations - but it came as damn close as anything could. The closest film experience I can equate to it now is the first time I saw the first Matrix film. I came out and something had changed.

-decided to add [spoilers] to the topic now that it's out and spoiler-tagging everything discussed will be tedious =) -thebruce

Wow, thanks for that review... I have to say I was slightly worried.. but this gets me excited for tonight (yes, I'm going to attempt to brave the insanity and go to the free FL showing here in Chicago). I was 10 when the original Tron came out, and literally saw it roughly 10 times in the theater back then! It's right up there with the impact that Star Wars had on me, there was nothing else like either movie! Tron was closer to home since I was in computer programming classes in school and not many people back then understood much about the impact of computers yet.

I've been hoping for this movie for a long time (just like most of the people on this forum and FL members in general), and now that it's become a reality I was bracing myself for a slight letdown... I hope from what I get from your enthusiasm that that won't be the case.

Thanks again!

INCREDIBLE. I think true TRON fans will love it because it goes out there and creates something new and unique, something like you've never seen before. A story you've never heard before. It really is a fantastic spiritual successor to the original, and an incredibly entertaining and fun movie as well.

I just returned from the Boston Flynn Lives screening and have to say that this is now one of my top ten films of all time, including the first TRON, A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner and Fight Club (to give you some context on my range of tastes). Aside from a few logical hiccups which I will not discuss until more people have had time to see the movie, this movie was everything that I had hoped it would be. The screening tonight was on a standard movie screen, so some of the 3D and special effects were a bit less than what I expect to see on the Big IMAX screening during the screenings on Wednesday and Thursday. With that said, I think that light jets are the most amazing visual experience that I have ever witnessed. The sequence brought to mind the Blue Angels shows that I use to watch with my father as a kid, BUT WITH LIGHT JETS MAN! I simply loved Jeff Bridges take on the older Flynn, and many may see a bit of the Dude in there when all is said and done. Garrett Hedlund was not as bad as I had thought he would be once you see his entire performance in the context of the film itself. Olivia Wilde was a joy to watch every time she was on screen. I will hold off on discussing the plot until more have seen the film, but with the exception of one glaring WTF moment toward the end, I thought that the plot was tight enough compared to the original and similar Sci-fi fare. And as OU812 mentioned, there are some nice nods to the original for us old school fans:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The Big Door is Back!

For a life long TRON fan who saw the original movie on opening night at the theater in the WDW Contemporary Hotel arcade, I must say that I really could not be more pleased with what I saw tonight. And tomorrow I get to see the original TRON on the big screen, then two more screenings of Legacy Wed & Thurs. This is indeed a wonderful week to be a user.

Oh and I was able to score TWO BAGS OF FLYNN LIVES BUTTONS for my unfiction peeps who did not get one during the final drops. I will post a separate thread with details on how you can claim yours.

- End of Line -

To be as obscure about the story as I can,

Firstly, I loved Tron: Legacy! It was dreamy and dark, and just a very eventual evolution from the original. And wile we all pretty much figured out the inevitable ending from just seeing what the movie was from the trailer, FL ARG, and other material sources, it was a fun ride.

Everything was fluid like some sort of molten glass, but just as brittle when not in motion. The world churned with an ocean and a beat from what was only interpreted as "lightning". The soundtrack drove along with the actions and emotions quite well, I cant say anything other than I loved this movie. The story has this subtle.... Miyazaki feel, I suppose because its like a living digital dream.

In a way, the, well, spirituality, that was brought into it went quite well with the theme of what happened in the first, Kevin Flynn's interactions, and his either subtle or intense interactions with his creation.

If, IF, there is a sequel in some way, I hope they do it justice as well. At times it did feel like they had maybe SOME influence from the designs thought out in Tron 2.0, but it all really spawned from the original anyway.

---alternatively---

I hope all of you met interesting people who also had an interest in TRON. For me its been a subtle part of my drive to be an artist I think, Always there, sort of that little go-to in the back of my head.... maybe it was the speed, maybe it was the world that was created from pure information, a wondrous canvas for someone with creative thoughts. I can only hope to see the creation of something similar in the future, if even a fraction the complexity and interactivity, who knows.

---before the show---

One thing to note, Houston had a SMALLLLLL group of people show up. There was a handful till nearly 40 minutes before showtime, I'm not sure where the rest came from by the time the film rolled, but I'm guessing the number was somewhere around 20? 30? Great people though, and it seems a few primary groups of people appeared, artists (visual and written word), and programmers/IT. I kind of wonder how well the movie will attract others when it's officially out, but I can only hope for the best.

Thank you Disney for reviving this franchise,
Thank you to all the companies involved in the movie,
Thank you 42E for the ARG and swag,
and
Thank you Unfiction, for helping my sorry bum through this!

The one thing that I was glad to see NOT in the film was

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Some drawn out explanation of how Kevin Flynn did all this (created the grid) to bring his wife back. Though this may come in a later film, I am very happy to learn that it played no part in this installment.

I am looking forward to a greater exploration of the ISO's origins and implications in subsequent films, if they (the films that is) are indeed made.

The movie was not what I expected. It was great!!! I am not disappointed. I did notice a few similarities between this one and the first. I too have to admit I liked all of the nods.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
My favorite was the nod to war games.

This.

In short, I thought the movie was amazing, and wherever it may have failed or fallen short in some aspects, it made up more than plenty in others. I'm very excited to see this one more than once Smile

I would not equate the improvement of 3D over 2D in this film to that of IMAX over standard film. In other words, the movie I think would be just as amazing in 2D as it is in 3D - it really didn't add much to the film that was needed to make it what it was; it wasn't all that significant, and at times a little blatant (3D scenes were clearly 3D, where others were somewhat flat, and others were intended to only be 2D).

But I think seeing it in IMAX will have a much greater impact over seeing it in a regular theater. The environments are simply epic in scale. Unbelievable.

I was quite impressed, but I will say I can see where talk of sequels comes from. The plot isn't super thick this time around, but definitely a bit denser than the first go around. I think that keeps things nice and smooth between the two, and you have to remember that Disney wants to keep the film attainable by a younger audience. When someone brings their adolescent kids, they don't necessarily expect them to grasp deep plots.

I'm ready to go all spoilerific on this subject as soon as we establish a solid place to do it. There's plenty to be talked about!

As for 3D, it may not be all that blatant for the most part, but I like it that way. The previews for the next Pirates movie were much more blatant, and I'm glad they didn't make Tron that way (I do think it better suits Pirates). Granted I saw this in RealD 3D, not IMAX of any kind, so the impression may be more pronounced there. I did notice one clever 3D effect that was meant to lend a lot to the texture of the film, but in RealD 3D didn't quite carry as well as intended. Modern 3D is still a pretty young technology, so I don't expect a lot from it yet.

Side note: After the Transformers preview we had a guy in our theater that spoke up afterward in the silence and said "That movie's gonna suck!" which got a fair round of laughter. I think it was the consensus.

You guys had previews? There was only one "commercial" and that was for the next season of V on Channel 7 (ABC). Other than that....the usual silence your phones & don't text PSAs (funny since we turned in our phones), then right into the movie.

We had no commercials like that, no phone warnings (yet we weren't wanded), but we did get shown some previews. First was Transformers, then in an exact order I can't remember were Pirates, Cars 2, and Mars Needs Moms. Pirates seemed to have been received OK, as was Cars 2, but I think we were all glad when Mars Needs Moms was over. Nobody even bothered to heckle that kiddie crap.

Also Loved it... Gotta say I was really worried that 42E and the ARG had built my expectations to be too high, so I started doing searches for negative reviews to try and calm my anticipation...

Some GREAT homages to us fans! moments that echo the original film, that commemorate the Dude, and happily surprised to see a lot of little nods to blade runner... (listen to Daft Punk's Rinzler track and then listen to Blade Runner's Opening Titles... translucent raincoats, etc...)

Agree the plot was a touch thin, but what made up for that for me were a number of things... The film and story is filled with TONS of potential sub plots. They could have spent alot of time explaining them, or even got stuck with a lot of exposition going into them... but instead they just establish the premise, and move on with the main through line of the story. Whish there was a little more pay-off on a couple things they only tease at

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(really wanted a tron fully redeemed fight with the rinzler mask pulled off at the end, wanted to see Clu's corruption of Tron, wanted some kind of reveal that Clu being a Basic made it impossible for him to exist in the real world, however Iso's with their complex and spontaneous code structure resembling DNA allowed for them to exist off grid... Coulda given Clu even more reason to hate the Iso's... Jealousy... But I digress, all things that can be explored in future sequals)

Some subplots I felt like were handled thanks to the ARG, the Comic book Prequel, and The Tron: Evolution game (talk about story gaps... yeesh!) making me feel that I personally, was having a fuller journey with the story than say a less invested viewer.

therefore I am curious to see how general public audiences will receive it...

Regardless, Bravo to Kosinski, Lisberger, Disney, 42E, and Kitsis & Horowitz!

I'm so glad to hear that FL ARGers are enjoying this movie; I got a bit worried about people saying how bad it was. You have restored my faith!

And on a side note, there was an ad for TL on TV today. My mum saw it and said "that looks stupid". I nearly punched her in the face Razz

I wareally hoping expecting to hear some cheers when Alan said he got the page Razz Alas, the room was silent and I cheered to myself Razz

We had previews as well, which brings me to my next point...

Reald3D can be 'real' or 'fake'. It's all a matter of when the 3D was made. Pirates is fake 3D - it pops out because they filmed it in 2D and did the 'cutnpaste' post-production 3D, which I hate with a passion - it's that 3D which makes a bad name for 3d movies because it's not natural 3D. It can be headache inducing and jarring and it's used to get on the 3D trend.

A movie needs to be filmed in 3D or rendered (3D CG films have all been, afaik, 'real' 3D). Avatar for instance was filmed and rendere in 3D. Piranha was not. Clash of the Titans was not. Parts of TL were (like the very opening scene, the beachhouse was 3D, the scenes inside weren't). I'm curious to know how much physical world was filmed in 3D, vs combined with digital backgrounds rendered in 3D to stand out (sometimes the faces appeared very flat themselves).

But like I said, because of how they incorporated 3D into the film, it's not enough to say really that TL is a great example of 3D tech, and the movie could be just as good with the same visual/epic effect without the 3D... IMO Smile
