Carpool roundup

Since I know a big issue in this case is going to be how to get from Seattle to Vancouver, we prolly need to get a def. hold on who can provide rides.
If you can, and would be willing, to carpool please state so here. It would be helpful if you could put your arrival dates and times for flying in, and also your departure dates and times for flying out. These are important, the drive out of Vancouver needs to be very organized.
We need to try and match up in a way that would be most convenient for all parties involved. Smile Thank you.

Well, the Ontario Contingent (myself and GW) will be arriving at 11:30am on the 15th, leaving 6:30am on the 20th. Odds are we'll grab a hotel in Seattle on the night of the 19th, to avoid having to get moving at 2am.

still on the fence

just wanted to reaffirm that LB and I do want to attend -- this is looking like an epic event -- but we cannot lock in any plane tickets for at least another month.

our job situation is in flux; same with our bank account.

we definitely would want to be part of any carpool from Seattle. just nudge me to make plans in May and tell us which time slot to shoot for. Until then, i'm afraid you'll have to be flexible.

carpooling to vancouver

You might want to take the Quick Shuttle http://www.quickcoach.com/ into consideration when making your plans. It crosses the border at Blaine (I think) which doesn't have the long lines that the Peace Arch does. You have to get off the bus and go through customs and fill out claim cards, but it beats waiting upwards of two hours in line at the Peace Arch. At any rate crossing at Blaine is easier if you're driving too. Looks like they offer hotel deals as well. They have group rates for the bus. Might end up being cheaper than renting a bunch of cars since Vancouver has an outstanding public transportation system. On the bus you don't have to pay for parking or gas or insurance, and you won't get lost (that Blaine crossing is tricky to find on the way back down).

Carpool round up

I'm in a similar situation to Catherwood and Leftbrained.
I'm still waiting on final settlement of my accident case to see what funding I have available (if any).

If I go (knock on wood), I would probably be arriving on the 15th and flying out on the 20th (and as Mart pointed out, going to Seattle the night before just to avoid the last minute rush).

I appreciate that folks are trying to save a buck, but this seems to be getting way complicated. You'll kill yourselves with all this travel. Not everybody will be on the same schedule. If you go to Seattle and manage to get a ride it's at least a three hour drive each way. If you can't hook up with one of the gang, then you're dependent on bus/train options which are cheap but really add to the travel schedule (travel to the station, wait for the next one to leave, THEN travel three+ hours). Add the Customs delay noted above. And that's on top of however many hours you spent in planes and airports getting there (I'm flying cross country and it will be a long day already). East coasters in particular remember that if you get in at midnight, your body will be reminding you pretty forcefully that it's really 3AM, so you should give yourself some leeway to deal with the time differential. I recommend that if you can, reduce uncertainty and travel time. Spend the extra $200 to fly direct into Vancouver and take a cab to the hotel; bum a ride from amongst those who rent cars (there will be several, including me).

I'm seriously considering this. I'm already pressed for time as it is, and the thought of spending at a bare minimum an extra 6 hours in travel time during a 3-day trip is not appealing to me, not to mention the logistics of getting back to Seattle and all the things that could potentially go wrong. And maybe it's just me but I hate being on other peoples' time schedules.

I'll just brown bag my lunch for the next couple of months Smile

Leaving here on the 15th of July, arriving Seattle at 4:19pm. A carpool would be nice but I'm not sure if anyone's going to want to come and meet the GNE people, Stewart has promised a tour. The date for that is still open. I'm leaving Seattle on the 20th at 7:17 am,, staying in Seattle the night before has to be, I'll never get up in time to drive from Vancouver and be at the airport in time for my flight.

Unfortunately, I can't afford an extra $200 for a flight right into Vancouver, I'm still working on having spending money and the flight is booked into Seattle. We're trying to buy a house and I just bought a postal jeep. I don't think that the insurance will be a problem, I have full coverage now and believe that it includes rentals.

I'm going to rent a car and whoever wants to carpool is invited to ride along. We can do it like a democracy where everyone gets a vote as to where we go and what we do, as long as I get to visit Stewart and Cat on one of those trips. Another thing, rentals can be set up with more than 1 driver, if anyone's going to be around about the same time, we could just sign up together!
