[SPEC] Root's password?

Before I post this topic in the puzzles I'll just open up a "spec" topic.

The character "root" e-mailed Beth from a little-boxes account. Does that mean he has a password at little-boxes?

No one has brought this up to my knowledge.

I don't necessarily think that message means he has a little boxes account. He may have just sent a message using the e-mail system at little boxes because he knows it's Beth's page.

My guess is that the "root" part of it probably has to do with being the "root" of the e-mail system on the little-boxes mail server rather than his name.

No, root is the super-user/admin on a UNIX box. Little-boxes has been haxx0r3d.

root is highest permission level on a unix or unix like machine..
I think the name was meant to prove that AI man was the rearranger, and that he had complete access to at least little-boxes..

Sample passwd file from a linux machine:
root:x:0:0:Root User:/root:/bin/bash
bin:x:1:1:bin:/bin:/sbin/nologin
daemon:x:2:2:daemon:/sbin:/sbin/nologin

Unless PDA man got access to Beth's account and cracked into _.

A couple of notes:

* Often the root account's password is useless without another login's password. For security reasons, modern Unix systems do not let root log in (via SSH, telnet, FTP, etc). Usually root does not send or receive email, but received messages for rootSPLATdomain.com get forwarded to a more "everyday" user account. In order to access the root account, you typically log in as an everyday (non-root) user, then issue a command to switch over to root access (typically "su" or "sudo").

* It is REALLY EASY to forge mail headers. Just because it says it is from rootSPLATdomain.com does not mean it is really from that account. This ease of header-forging is why there is so much spam and so many viruses. It is entirely possible the silent man does not have an account from which to send email, so simply used what was at hand (forging a message from Beth as root to Beth on her everyday account).

After everything is said and done, I think we can safely ignore "root@little-boxes.net."

Most likely I am not following this very well cause I dont know that much about computers and all of that but it seems to me that if he were and artificial intelligence that was able to "heal his boo boos" lele just by getting access to beths computers at work it would seem to me that AI man would most likely be able to walk around with in the computer programs much like the charecters in the matrix did so then getting into Beths email would just be a matter of opening up a door for him. Kinda like R2 D2 did when He saved Luke, Lea and Hans solo from the garbage compactor

There are some exceptions to the sending of mail.. Some automated system stuff such as Paul Vixies Cron do like to send stuff as root, but thats local and not outgoing. But even with that, not important to this discussion..

I second that emotion..

When you've succeded in convincing the author of this thread that this is nothing to be looked into, just let it go. Rolling Eyes

Imagine you're a program and you want to communicate with a specifc person, in this case Beth...and now you have access to "lots of computing power". Follow the logical steps...

- Beth has an account here (Metadex)
- I want to send an email to Beth
- I need a Metadex account
- What account will give me all access?
- I'll take over "root" account

From "his" perspective, gaining root is trivial, he's a program...and not some run-of-the-mill program either.

What PDA means? I know who is the strange AI man but I don't understand what is PDA?

A PDA is a Personal Digital Assistant, a rather elaborate name for digital palmtops (put simply: a digital agenda) like Palm.

If you're stuck on meanings or definitions, Google is a good way to try and find the answer. If you type for example "define: PDA" in Google you get a nice overview of explanations.
