Tron Legacy box office

If you look at dailies on Boxofficemojo, Tron is doing surprisingly well still. It was even 2nd place on Tuesday, not far behind Fockers. And since it's been out a week longer, that's pretty impressive. Clearly, geeks off from school and work are enjoying Tron still. It has already recouped its money with global box office.

And I could see it becoming THE 3-D Bluray standard.

I really hope Disneyland keeps with their TRON blue sky plans for Tommorrowland.

There will be a sequel no doubt. Maybe a Trilogy.

I hope so!

As long as they don't kill the format first. Right now the various companies that produce 3D glasses are making popular movies exclusive to their brand and requiring you buy 2 pair of glasses to get the movie (Or turing a $30 purchase into a $300 one).

Don't know if anyone else here has mentioned it already, but if you look up the wikipedia entry for Tron: Legacy, Steven Lisberger stated that a sequel was officially in production and that Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis, screenwriters for Tron: Legacy, were in the early stages of producing a script for the new film...

GOOD!

I'd really like to see Bonnie and Alan involved.

Can't really see how the third film will pan out... Tron:Legacy seemed like a pretty conclusive ending to me. I assume that most people on this ARG have watched the film by now!! Anyway...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When Sam saved the contents of the Tron world onto the memory card, is the Tron world still "active" or is it in some sort of hibernation? (Additionally, how did Sam manage to upload the contents of the server onto his memory card??)

The only way that I can see it working is maybe if Quorra gets seriously injured and Sam has to take her back to her world in order to save her(?)

Anybody know what the capacity of the average server was back in 1983/1989?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
i found 64GB Flash memory cards and 256GB thumb drives from Kingston (granted they are almost $800). Sam could totally use something like this... especially since he has Encom technology at his finger tips.

By 1980 the first Gigabyte Hard Drive (IBM 3380) was released. It was around the size of a refrigerator. But was not widely used.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Though, I imagine the computer used in the film was based off the original system that Flynn was taken into during the first movie. So based off the original date of release for the first movie (1982), and considering that Flynn most likely did not bring the Encom servers with him to his Arcade basement. I would imagine by 1989, had he been using disc drive tech, his system would have had somewhere around 1 megabyte to 1 gig. {this also takes into consideration that he most likely did not add hard drives to a local server setup over time [due to a possible fear of altering the grid, possibly for fear of losing the Isometric lifeforms]}

His Arcade basement showed no signs of large hard drive systems setup. Sam could have easily fit the contents of that computer multiple times over on any number of modern and fairly cheap memory stick devices. Back in 94' my computer was a top of the line PC with a big ol' 200mb HD in it. Basically, memory limitations have grown in leaps and bounds over the years.

The question y'all should be really asking is given the status of modern computers, what would a modern Tron-O-verse look like?

Faster processors (multiple core tech) means faster cycles, extending time on the grid perhaps. Making one minute possibly last more the 8 hours, maybe years?

Larger ram, hard drive space (solid state drives and flash memory), possibly creating larger more complex systems. Programs written in different scripting languages, maybe creating ethnicity on the grid.

What would the games on a modern grid look like? Halo? Grand Trismo? Team Fortress 2? ...Angry Birds?

And hey, the Internet. What would the world wide web look like with multiple systems connecting a near endless supply of data and programs?

All that is what I would like to really know.

Keep in mind that...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...you're quibbling over server specs when you're talking about a company/person who has a laser that is capable of deconstructing and recreating living tissue. Which is more unlikely, that they have enough server capacity to digitize/replicate a living person, or that such a laser even exists?

From my experience, typically anything that grosses $200 Million or more domestically is nearly guaranteed a sequel. Right now, according to Box Office Mojo, TRON: Legacy is sitting at $133.6 Million domestically, however at only 18 days of release it's far from making all of it's money.

TRON: Legacy likely won't become the next Avatar ($749.7 Million Domestic), or even the next Pirates of the Caribbean ($305.4 Million Domestic), as much as Disney put their best efforts out there with marketing to appeal to a wide audience, TRON still has that niche stigma associated with it. However, if the movie can gross over $200 Million Domestically with a similar gross Internationally it's almost certain Disney will make a sequel. It may not have been the break out hit they hoped for, but considering box office sales were down 44% since last year in December the current standing at $133.6 Million isn't too shabby, and as I said before, it's still got enough momentum to maintain sales at least through the end of January.

Also keep in mind that...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...the movie could be a sort of commentary on the human soul; the digital realm could easily be a sort of metaphysical depiction of how humans/souls/etc exist beyond simply physical material, and here being digitized doesn't mean this is all what is being re-created, down to the atom, within a digital system, but rather how the human mind would cope with such a different world.

Not really a spoiler, just wanted to follow suit Smile

I personally favour that interpretation over the exorbitant claim that any system, even for a company that can digitize matter, can recreate such a detailed, specific, perfect system with physics, and human-like visually perfect detail down to the hair (and presumably molecular level).

Seems more likely the digital world we see in the film is how they wrote the human soul/mind to interpret its existence in a completely digital form, and interacting with the digital world.

(much like the shared dream-state of Inception)

A small article about the third film. Apparently now it's official.

With a pretty cool suggestion about the next possible villain.

That story has nothing new to offer and is FAR from an official confirmation that any sequel is going forward. The writers were working on a story for a possible third flick long before Legacy was released. And Dillinger Jr as the villain... um, I don't think that is much of a stretch to foresee.

When anything official is stated by Disney, it will be reported on the major movie news sites.
