This makes me wonder what would happen if a viewer actually travelled to Baldpate and looked in that house, or maybe around where the EMH crew filmed. Apparently the Ted Stiles Preserve is in a place called the Sourlands (Sourland Mountain), which is about 1 hour and 20 minutes from my town. An EMH-related roadtrip would be fun, but probably pointless. Smile

@veljko: Was it ever stated that they went to the same school? I'm not sure, but maybe if they attended different ones, it'd be easier for Jeff to conceal the incident.

I agree with veljko which is why I was obsessing about the school last night. Why doesn't Vinnie know of this? What are Corenthal's papers doing there? It's a huge question mark and I keep thinking that either the school memory is a subconscious blind for something else, or there's much more to it than either we or Jeff realize. Or both.

This is why I even went for the wild idea that the burnt out school was actually Fairmount, but the gang's altered memories and perceptions might only process it as "Jeff's old school." That's a little too OTT even for me, but I still wonder.

I thought about going up to Baldpate myself, but in addition to my work I've always been strictly a city boy and don't drive. The brunt of my experience with Jersey is the turnpike.

I've always just assumed that the papers were planted by whoever is leaving the rest of the papers in the boxes and such. That would require the paper-leaver to have access to Jeff's dreams, to be able to implant dreams in Jeff's head, or to be monitoring Jeff closely enough that he or she or it would be able to determine where Jeff was heading and race ahead of him to plant the papers. Or it could just require a little handwaving. Smile

Why doesn't Vince remember his best buddy from childhood getting trapped in a burning school? Maybe for the same reason they don't remember Steph's room exploding a week after she was released, unlike everybody not involved in the great escape. Vince was outside the scope of the timespace amendment that moved Jeff from having evacuated safely into having been trapped. That would also explain how "every student was accounted for"--in the initial playthrough of events, Jeff made it out.

Wait, you just blew my mind. What are we talking about here? I thought SM/whoever used the fire at the hospital as a reality-warp cover for everybody else so as to get EMH off the hook for Steph's escape.

But Vinnie is one of the gang, which means he - hypothetically, not necessarily, I'll allow - is prone to all the same alterations as the others. So my question is why would Vinnie not remember Jeff in the school fire unless Jeff wasn't in it? I've always found it very strange that Jeff was struck by sudden dreams of his school which led him right to Corenthal. It all seems far too orchestrated, IGwise.

I would speculate that it's not gang membership that determines whether one can remember an alteration but rather whether or not one was part of the alteration. Slendy-or-whoever didn't need Vince to be different pre- and post-divergence, so he was left in the original reality-stream.

So there was no reality at all in which Jeff was trapped in the school, only a false memory implanted at an opportune moment? That's an elegant solution; I like it a lot.

EDIT: And it still needs to be asked: Why did Slendy-or-whoever feel the need to cover up the Great and Unnecessary Escape? If he's just looking for tasty minds to rape, surely he could do that as easily if the gang were behind bars as if they were free. It seems like Slendy must have some objective in mind he wants the gang to complete, but what?

I think he would need to be altered - Vinnie and Jeff supposedly have known each other forever. Therefore Vinnie should be privvy to this.

That's what I'm starting to consider - that Jeff's conscious mind has substituted Centralia with the school incident to account for a lasting trauma which his psyche retains. Which he either was not actually there for, and he visited a random school, or which never happened and they were somewhere else.

But I don't know if I wanna go there yet. Right now the school appears to exist, and I think before we go down such a wild and woolly path, we have to first deal in a few other more obvious and realistic possibilities - don't avoid the obvious for the esoteric. It's equally likely, probably moreso, that what Jeff is telling us is absolutely true - he was in a burning school as a child and barely survived, and visited that school during his roadtrip and "Reunion." Okay. So what does that have to do with everything else? Before we look at time travel and the kids being one and the same I think we have to be fair and slightly more grounded, and ask how or why our Jeff's life could be paralleling the Centralia Jeffrey's. Is it reincarnation, is SM engineering the similar incidents, etc.

IMO, because he doesn't want the police on them. I think he wants them together and safe and available for whatever he has in mind. Yet he still won't let them see the videos, it seems. They're special, the question is why.

It just occurred to me, have we had confirmation of the length of their acquaintance other than Didz's emails with Alex? I want to say it was in one of the Ustreams, but if so that didn't make it into the wiki.

Maybe Vince and Jeff were friends since childhood, but the fire occurred earlier in their childhood than their meeting.

Yes. Despite the speculation, I think it could very well just be a tiny little continuity error.

I agree, but at this point I'm not sure we have enough information to do anything other than wildly speculate. I have my pet theories, but I don't think they're any better-supported than any other theories. For all we know, we're only at the midpoint of the whole thing, and the nature of their relationship is going to be the big twist in the final video sometime in May, or June, or December 2012.

I think it was confirmed that Vinnie and Jeff go way back but that they met Evan in HS. Nonetheless, just to be exact, I asked again about how they all met in my letter and maybe they'll reiterate soon.

You're right, of course, about the breadth and validity of our information right now. I just keep looking for the one little thread to pull and start unspooling a little more info. I'm not sure what would have happened, for example, if Rhiannon hadn't hit on the one detail of Jeff's roadtrip which he knew we could not have possibly known about without seeing the hidden videos - this is what convinced him of their existence. Would events have changed at all, happened sooner, later, not at all?. That goes back to the question of 'how interactive are we' - still very much up for debate - but regardless I'm always looking for that one detail.

Harkening back to something on this page, and also something that has been mentioned before like, a million years ago, but there has been some possibility that Slender Man was indeed sticking around the hospital- around Steph- and that the Great Damsel Breakout '10 was not only allowed by Him, but possibly aided by Him as well- because perhaps He wanted the "Corenthal Four" together. For whatever reason, and assuming Steph is REDACTED. Old theory but someone asked...

I think that is a very safe assumption at this point. Especially after the Hidden Video trance speaking.

Steph=Redacted.

Hah actually after I posted that I reread it and asked myself why I had typed that. For once, cursing my inability to edit...

Man. this divergent/tangent/timelines/realities thing is getting nuts. I... don't really know what to think at this time, so I'm just going to leave off theorizing.

Nothing from HABIT yet. I probably should have left the question asking to more involved players.

Everyone's been quiet. I've not heard that anyone's email to the EMH crew has been answered. HABIT hasn't tweeted anything. The Thing That Wears Greenfeathers Like A Hat hasn't posted, or answered any mails. It's just Unfiction that's buzzing like an overturned hive.
