I mean, I'm no good with theories or anything, so y'know, I mostly lurk, but a notion of Anti-Habit just comes off as completely...not plausible to me. Then Evan being Anti-Habit and actually editing things into videos...that just doesn't compute because Evan doesn't technology, like...ever.

It was really just playing off of what Lewa said. I wasn't really expecting it to play into the plot.

Could you elaborate on this?

Sure. While this isn't something you could do practically, you could in theory create an "invisible videos" situation. All you really need to do is detect when the videos are being viewed and modify the HTML on the fly to display either the channel page without the videos or a 404 page in case you head straight to the video itself. I'm simplifying, of course, as this doesn't take into account embedding and you'd have to handle mirroring by being very vigilant and adding the new versions of the videos into a blacklist.

Now the question is, how does one edit the HTML? There are three ways that come to mind.

1. Do it at the source. Hack Google and make YouTube elide the videos when a request for them comes from a computer related to the EMH Crew. There are two problems here: hacking into Google and identifying the computers. If we assume Dr. Slenderhabitthal[1] is a movie-level hacker[2], then the chief problem is safely identifying the EMH crew computers. That would mean keeping an accurate inventory of all their computers and internet capable devices and what methods they use to connect to the 'net and identifying them by their IP number. This is quite likely impossible to achieve. No matter how sophisticated the system they could always use an unsecured WiFi in a nearby town and bypass it entirely.

2. Man in the Middle Intercept the traffic somehow. Either fiddle with the DNS and hijack the YoutTube domain name (but just for them) or just do deep packet inspection in the hope you can figure out when they try and look for the video.

3. Infect their computers The most practical approach is to infect every internet-capable device they have with a malicious piece of software that detects requests for YouTube and rewrites them as necessary. Probably the best approach. Unfortunately if they use an internet cafe computer, buy a new one or encounter a fan with a smartphone and a mission your months of careful coding go down the drain.

Summa summarum, it's hard, almost certainly won't stand up to the most cursory attack, but if you allow a measure of movie logic it is not beyond the realm of possibility. Hope this little aside was at least amusing.

[1] Or whoever does the scary video production.
[2] I.e. as good as he needs to be for plot purposes.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to uhh, like, insult ya or anything. My brain is just having difficulties wrapping itself around all the epileptic trees that are being thrown around right now...

Yeah, I was joking originally, then thought it was an interesting epileptic tree and elaborated on it more than I'd planned. I'm sure it's wrong, but there's nothing better to talk about.

hosts file, sniffer and some yet-to-be-named software. It's possible. Actually, I've done such things many times. It's hard, but possible.

Comes under the heading of "fiddling with the DNS". Smile However I think that you'd need a site that acts as a proxy for YouTube and which serves altered versions of EMH related pages. It would be rather tricky, because you can't just block access. You need to make sure YouTube functions perfectly while altering every mention of every video. Every step of this is a non-trivial problem in its own right. Dr. Slenderhabitthal is one badass hacker. Very Happy

I'm almost certain that's not how it works in the show, however. It would add little to the story and would just create plotholes.

Just have to point out that besides your excellent write-up today, this is the greatest thing ever.

It definitely doesn't work like that in the show since they can't see the videos even on DVD players.

It's time to give it up. They've made it perfectly clear that they want to move past these videos.

They can't see them.

I don't think anyone is advocating for them to watch them again. To be honest, we just needed them to trust us that they existed and what was on the tapes. That was established with the email to them talking about stuff that Jeff didn't think we could know.

if we truly wanted them to see what was on the tapes. Like 3 of us would bust out the ol camcorder and reenact them all... perhaps as an opera, but only because I'm weird.

Honestly, I don't think there is much in the way of a grounded, tech-based explanation for the hidden videos or the boys' inability to view them. I lean towards this being very simple and perhaps mystical - HABIT or SM himself uploaded them, or perhaps psychically imbued the footage onto the Net in the manner of Sadako's/Samara's "cursed video" in the Ring horror films, which was projected into a physical medium. As for why the EMH kids can't view them, they're not meant to so something stops it. Or their unconscious prohibits it. Or both. That's all there is IMO.

lol. It doesn't have to be mystical of an answer per se.

Especially if multiple timeline jumping is occurring.

A simple answer is that their Youtube as they view it from a certain timeline doesn't have these videos. It runs just fine because it's still Youtube, but because of Quantum mechanics, the videos in question simply don't exist on it.

Same for the DVD. In some universe the DVD fucks up... they got that DVD...

This can be chalked up to Slendy or other forces bending quantum choices to their own wills.... allowing improbability to occur anytime and anywhere.

Teleportation, time travel, selective viewing, broken unbroken dvds, these are all very possible with quantum mechanics.

Yep. I just went Hitchhikers guide on dis.
