And in any event, all our attempts to push them on the contents of the hidden videos have failed miserably, the latest being during the chat the other night.

Because they crossed the streams. Whatever you do, don't cross the streams. When you see footage of your own doppelgangers, the spacetime continuum goes all twisty.

Or maybe the breakdown wasn't caused by the video at all but was one of the baddies running interference to keep them from seeing the video. That would explain the ominous shadow that crossed over them.

Well, what if there was a way to test that theory - see if someone is listening - and send something back?

There isn't any way to test that, of course. But golly, wouldn't it be nice if there was.

Also, do we know it was Jeff who highlighted that passage in his copy of HOL? Did he ever explain his reasons for doing that?

Wait a goddamned minute. I checked the wiki on HOL and remembered I had forgotten this nuance of all that Jeff's bedroom mishegoss:

Okay. Then either this shit all happened before and SM/HABIT/whoever on the wrong side of the equation had it and dropped it by, or there is a way for it to get from "there" to "here" by other means. The former may be more likely, but who knows.

The EMH trio has been 'split' somehow? Half of their essence is in the Ark while the other half is here. Some of the oddness and 'hidden videos' may have come from the trio in the Ark trying to communicate with their other halves.

We just might have a winner here! Even without the split consciousness, the "hidden" videos could actually be footage of what the Arkverse trio endured on their way to being trapped in the basement. I'm not sure if the videos come from a separated part or an alternate self. Depends on your interpretation. I like the alternate self idea with the notion of many cycles. But that's the annoying part about this. I like this hypothesis. And long, painful experience has taught me to be wary of hypotheses I'm fond of. Could we be seeing stuff that isn't there?

I'm not sure we ever got to the bottom of the HoL reference. They could just be using the potent, nyctophobia-inducing brand of horror that its famed for as a seasoning for EMH. Or, it could just be a very simple reference -- dual universe and the notion of the Other Place that permeates EMH[1]. It could also be a complex thematic reference. What it means is difficult to say. It's not that you have to understand what the HoL quote means, you have to understand what story!Jeff thinks the quote means and to do that you have to understand what the EMH crew thinks it means and what they thing Jeff ought to think it means. I'd revise that sentence, but reading it gives me a nosebleed. Smile

If I had to guess I'd point out that there's really only one possible God-figure in EMHVerse. Hell, he's already referred to as Him. As such, SM could be the creator who made the world as a means of self-expression, but mortal entities cannot comprehend him and react with horror, madness and finally death. The fact that he seems unable to comprehend that people can't live trough exsanguination and organ-removal, isn't helping. It is the good old fashioned horror of a creator-deity that's omnipotent but, disturbingly, not omniscient and thus capable of acting in error.[2] Azathoth, in short. Slenderman always had at least a bit of the Lovecraftian[3].

Is this guess correct? Almost certainly not. It just shows you can squeeze quite a lot of speculation out of a few verses. Which, ultimately, may have been the point.

Or, to answer your question in brief: I don't know, but I've delineated my lack of knowledge in great detail. Very Happy

Jeff's answer might clear things up, but with EMH being what it is, probably not.

[1] Doesn't matter if you consider the, ahem, disputed videos canon or not. It is present all the same, only in ways more subtle. The hidden videos, after all, seem to come from Somewhere Else. Or, at least, they do to me.
[2] Offtopic point of interest: You can easily create religious horror by taking the Abrahamic God and removing an 'O'. Make him not omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent or omnibenevolent. The first is Azathoth, the second the helpless, myths-over-Miami god, the third is god you can be shut away from and the fourth the standard malevolent deity. I don't think this helps with EMH, I just thought it interesting. Smile

[3] Funnily enough, very few references to HPL get made. The only one I remember is DavFlamerock using an alter-ego from Miskatonic university when playing Just Another Fool. Really amusing, even though newbies in the comments kept calling him out as a fraud. Good times.

Even if he is the Voyeur - if he had that USB, he's got a fuck of a lot more explaining to do.

And based on that interview the other day, I don't believe Vinnie is overtly malicious anymore. I really don't know what his deal is.

Perhaps HABIT is a kind of 'Gatekeeper'. He could be the one planting the videos and things like the USB. As far as my split theory goes I have another angle on it but it a bot complicated. I'm going to spoiler it in case you want to pass it by, and hell, I'm not sure of the likelihood of it:

The split both has and hasn't happened. For the ArkTrio it has since Jeff mentions they were with the Doctor. We know that event has possibly not happened yet since I think ArkJeff was meaning he was talking with the Doctor.

For the EMHTrio the split hasn't happened yet. They still have to be with the good Doc for the event to trigger. But, if the Ark is a place out of our time the ArkTrio could have been there since the beginning and know what is coming and are trying to break the cycle which will free them.

Yes, it is confusing and half thought out but I wanted to share.
