Jeff heard it too, he remarked how the tape said "it's doo dark out" when it was the middle of the day. I think Vince heard it, too, re reacted similarly to Jeff.

I think we just have to take the "Mom" recording at face value.

I think the more interesting(but pointless in regards of the story) side-story is the story about the recording. As in, is that an actual recording of his mom...or did he get someone record it. Find it. yadda yadda.

But, again, not really relevent beyond saying Alex has some issues.

I am going to propose one more thing before I let this die: Maybe only Jeff and Alex hear it, because it's the projected voice of their mom. Wait, was that the same boombox in Upper Body & Arms? Oh wait. No it wasn't.
I am ketchup.

Only Jeff, Alex...and us can hear it then? What does that say about us?

I just rewatched it, and Vince does say something like, "He's been like that this whole time, he's losing it".

Now, true, going with your theory, this might indicate Vince couldn't hear it (which would cause him to remark how he responds to a boombox playing nothing), but with Vince acting the same way about asking the mom, it seems more likely that it's a voice played off the boombox.

Okay, honestly, the creepiest thing about this whole video is the Alex/boombox thing for me. I mean, call me jaded, but The Rake is pretty standard supernatural video stuff as compared to super-crazy-ultra-tragic mental damage that is implied in the recording. Weren't their parents meant to have died in an airplane crash? Does anyone else find it weird that an accident would effect Alex this profoundly or this long after puberty? Could there be something more to it?

Well, as someone mentioned earlier, it could be Slendy related. Like...too much mind fuckery?

We're slowly seeing that everyone has some hardcore mental hang-ups going on. Crazy Evan and now Crazy Alex. And if you want to include Jeff's Uber-sad panda stage and Steph's behaviour regarding Jessa and her parents...

They're all kind of damaged, eh?(and who could blame them, really?)

Makes me think, they need to find Dr. Corenthal and he's the one who can help them. He "failed them last time (again)" though, as he says in the storage room flashback.
Maybe the only way to break the cycle/repair the damage done to their minds, they must find the Dr. and fight whatever is hurting them together.

Is it a general consensus that Dr. Corenthal is a "good guy"?
Concerning the articles about him murdering people, I believe (like many others) that he is consistently in the wrong place at the wrong time, or he knows that and is just trying to save kids/people and keeps getting mixed up in Slendy/Rake massacres.

And Evan should be all like "YOU'RE ENTERING A WORLD OF PAIN"

The figure is feminine and noting Sparky's recent use as a puppet, anything is possible. But Slenderman is not The Rake.
Indeed he isn't. But maybe there's meant to be a parallel here? Perhaps the Rake does in a vulgar, crude, violent way what Slenderman does in a more sophisticated and subtle way?

I suspect that this is a consequence of some property that is similar to that which allows Slendy to be captured on film even if the person with the camera can't see him. If we were personally present when the boombox was played, it's possible that we wouldn't have heard it either (provided that Vince didn't actually hear it, as has been theorized). However, since the camera recorded it, we can hear the sound from the boombox in the playback of the footage.

I think that this mental damage results from a combination of the stress from this bizarre, violent situation and of Slendy's influence. If Slendy's presence can make a crawlspace lead to a distant abandoned house, and make that same abandoned house also lead to a beach (complete with a time warp from daytime to nighttime in a matter of apparent seconds), it's not much of a stretch to say that Slendy's presence can also put tension on one's mental well-being.

Usually, Slendy doesn't attack the cast except to defend himself. He typically either pops up to see what's going on (or something to that effect) or warps the cast through space and/or time, intentionally or otherwise.

Meanwhile, the Rake is more or less defined by its violent nature. It's murdered several people and has directly attacked the cast without provocation. Aside from the fact that both Slendy and the Rake are probably supernatural in origin, I can't find very many similarities between the two of them. Feel free to correct me if I've made a factual error in here.

I think it's somewhat far-fetched to assume the voice from Alex's boombox can't be heard except by him, his bro, and the camera..
I mean, you're just basing this on the fact that it sounds kind of playback-y-weird?
Even if it really isn't in the original recording, I would rather tend to believe that they just edited it in OOG in creating the video and didn't mean anything by it.

IMHO.

I think they can hear it and it's just meant to sound creepy.

And, practically speaking, finding and recording a tape, as well as recording it with a flipcam's mic, might not be the best way to get the point across.
